November 2011 program On November 11, Jane Patrick will be giving the guild's program on Creative Cloth: Play, Planning & Perfecting Ideas to Make Cloth You Love. Jane will give a mini-workshop after a lunch break on Magic Fingers: Exploring the Finger-controlled Techniques. Jane Patrick grew up on the broad plains of south central Nebraska where from an early age she earned the moniker of the family putzer because she was always making things. It wasn t until she walked into the weaving studio at Löngumýri home economics school as an exchange student in Iceland that she knew that weaving was something she must do. Since then weaving has been both her livelihood and hobby. Jane is a past editor of Handwoven magazine and is currently creative director for Schacht Spindle Co. She is the author of two books: Time to Weave, and most recently, The Weaver's Idea Book. Jane is active in the Handweaver s Guild of Boulder and gives workshops and programs around the country. She loves exploring the possibilities of weaving on the rigid heddle loom, as well as introducing and reintroducing weavers to the diversity and charm of the finger-controlled weaves. Jane Patrick Mini-workshop November 11, 2011 Magic Fingers: Exploring the Finger-controlled Techniques Workshop description: The simplest of weave structures can be used to create luscious, irresistible cloth. Using rigid heddle or harness looms, this workshop will focus on how to use yarns, structure, or both to create fabrics where less is more. We ll explore finger-controlled techniques such as leno and brooks bouquet, as well as pile structures such as looping, rya and soumak. Last but not least, we ll look at the highly textural surfaces possible with simple plain weave where novelty yarns, hand-spun yarn, or color and weave are used to create a texture s surface. You can use any loom you want: rigid heddle, 4, or 8 harness. Warp: sport weight wool (such as Brown Sheep Nature Spun) or 3/2 pearl cotton or similar, sett at 10 epi, at least 7 inches wide and 1 ½- 2 yards long, depending how fast you weave. A light color will be easiest to see. Warp with a straight draw (1,2,3,4, etc.) if you are using a 4 or 8 shaft loom as the plan is to do only plain weave. Weft: sport weight wool (such as Brown Sheep Nature Spun) or 3/2 pearl cotton or similar, in the same color as the warp, plus small quantities of other yarns for playing around, straight knitting needles in a few sizes, 1-2 stick shuttles, crochet hook, tapestry needle, and scissors. The workshop is limited to 15 persons with a cost of only $12.50 for the workshop. Registration forms and checks must be sent in as soon as possible. A waiting list will be maintained if more than 15 are registered. Please indicate if you do not wish to be on a waiting list and your check will be returned to you. Look for the registration form on page 3 of this newsletter. If you have any questions you can reach Sarah at sjrichards1@msn.com or call (719)

November Weaving Sample by Doreen McLaughlin The After 5 Weavers decided to study Ms & Os. Since I love to follow a pattern (and hate to design my own), I looked up Ms & Os patterns in the Weaver s Index. In Issue 32, pages 50-51, Mimi Smith s Found Treasure: Lace and Honeycomb Mat was listed as a Ms & Os pattern. After reading the article, I began to key the pattern into my WeavePoint software and ran into trouble. In the article, Ms. Smith stated she set up the pattern as a multiple of three to make it easy to sley the reed (3 ends to a dent in a 12 dpi reed). Well, the draft as printed in the magazine is not in groups of three. So I revised the draft to be groups of three, with the white warp indicating a doubled yarn in the heddle. Next, I changed the draft for yarns I could easily locate. I found a cone of 10/2 cotton in emerald green. Since the original pattern used 16/2 cotton for the fine and 8/2 cotton for the thick, I knew I would need to recalculate the sett and size of the pattern. I decided to aim for a sett of 24 epi and a 44 inch width. I doubled the 10/2 rather than try and find a 5/2 in the same color. After pages of math, I decided to go with 932 pattern ends including 7 selvedge ends not shown on the threading but using shafts 9 and 10 in the tieup, plus 146 doubled ends, for a total of 1078 ends or 49 ends in each of the 22 two-inch wide sections of my AVL PDL s sectional warp beam. For 6 yards, I needed a minimum of 6468 yards for the warp and 5760 yards of weft. 10/2 cotton has yards per ounce. The emerald green cone weighed 39 ounces, for a yardage estimate of 10,237.5 yards, not enough for both the warp and weft. I then went down to the stash and found a cone of mystery yarn (inside the cone was written Blueberry ) that looked to be very similar to the size of the 10/2 emerald green cotton and weighed 32 ounces. The Blueberry yarn became my weft yarn. I warped on to my AVL 16-shaft Compudobby loom using the AVL warping wheel. Over the 22 sections I only had one end that was too short (those short ends make an interesting sound when they snap). Since I had tied colored thrums to the cross, I was able to insert the lease sticks and route the warp over the warp rod and into position for sleying the heddles without sitting inside the loom. The sleying of the heddles and the reed went quickly. While weaving, the only variable was adjusting the old-fashioned AVL cloth advance. I finally settled on picks per inch. The left hand selvedge is fine, while the right side is pitiful, even with a temple and sticky warp beam. I did notice the cloth going on to the cloth beam was not tight, I finally realized why when I spotted Amanda kitty snoozing on the fabric. 4

November Spinning & Dyeing Sample by Peggy Doney Dyeing Sample I pondered how to dye some Ashland Bay Merino roving without felting it and came up with this idea. I had window screening made out of fiber glass for my silk fusion work so I laid out a long length of screen that was cut to fit into my dye pot. Laying the roving out width wise between the edges of the screen (don't go to the edges but stay back an inch or so) in a sine wave pattern lets you put more fiber in place. Bring both ends of the screen together and either (1) pre soak in a water/ vinegar solution (approximately 20 minutes), (2) put into a dye pot with water, dye stock, and vinegar and push under and let it wet through (approximately 20 minutes), or (3) put screen into dye pot with water and dye stock and push under but add vinegar later for a different strike (approximately 20 minutes). If pre soaked in water and vinegar, remove the screen and roving and place in dye pot and begin heating slowly. Follow acid dyeing directions. Let roving cool in pot and wash and rinse in the screen. Spin out excess water and hang to dry. What was fun was to see how the dye components would break and dye the roving into sedimentary type layers. What I loved is that I had Merino roving that stayed intact and did not felt! Spinning Sample The Beehive Coil yarn is spun from an Ashland Bay Merino roving that I hand dyed. I split the roving length wise into thumb sized widths (this has a direct factor on the size of the beehive coil) but did not pre draft. Using the smallest whorl, I put in a high amount of twist into a slubby singles (known as the effect yarn), knowing the amount of plying that would happen could cause structural failure if there wasn't enough twist. To make the slub, pinch the fiber with your forward hand and pull a staple length of the fiber out from the rest of the roving, making sure that it still stays connected to the roving. Treadle to tighten and spin a thin section and repeat the slub motion. Remember to add extra twist throughout! On a second bobbin, spin a fine, high twist singles. Attach both singles to a third bobbin and ply in the opposite direction. Upon reaching the slub, anchor the end by wrapping the slub singles with the fine singles several times. Hold the effect yarn in the right hand and let it wrap around the singles. At the end of the slub, push it towards the wheel orifice to make a coil and anchor the trailing end of the slub. Wet finish the yarn and enjoy the texture! Sampling is important to learn just how much twist the yarn needs. 5

Notes from the President by Beverly Weaver The PPWG Tapestry study group is sponsoring an introduc on to tapestry workshop. Carole Browne Stewart has met with some members to teach them how to prepare their looms and begin a tapestry. Several we joining techniques will be discussed at future mee ngs. The Tapestry study group is open to any PPWG members who want to learn more about tapestry or who want to share their knowledge with the group. The More than Four study group is pursuing a study of mul sha crackle. We are all looking forward to seeing Susan Wilson s book on crackle that is coming out this fall. The Northern Lights study group is sponsoring the challenge for next May s mee ng: Pillow Fight T3. The details were in the October newsle er. All PPWG members are invited to par cipate, and there will be judging and awards at the May mee ng. I am looking forward to seeing a lot of imagina ve entries in this challenge. Enjoy the cool fall weather and make some me for your weaving, spinning and dyeing. Vice President s Report by Sally Kuhn Our October Program was awesome, hearing Jennifer Linssen step us thru the transitions she followed since her aha moment of going from fascination with the Katagami stencils as tools to having the stencils be the focal point of the three-dimensional art she creates. I am so glad she shared with us her series of teapots; that was so much fun to see! Both Sarah and I thank you, Jennifer, for your wonderful and lively program. Susan Bowman, who rated Jennifer s afternoon workshop excellent, went on to say, Jennifer is an enthusiastic and knowledgeable speaker and held back nothing on this topic of selling our work. Her talk included how to generate a portfolio, approaching galleries/museums/boutiques, pricing, business record keeping and mailing lists. One of the best speakers I've heard on this topic and the detail was incredible. Our November 11 th Program will be Creative Cloth: Play, Planning & Perfecting Ideas to Make Cloth You Love presented by Jane Patrick of Boulder. If you have seen either of Jane s books Time to Weave or The Weaver s Idea Book you already know that Jane has not only practiced the topic on which she is talking, but she knows how to communicate her knowledge and enthusiasm to the rest of us! Please join us. After a break for lunch, those of us lucky enough to have signed-up for Jane s workshop will explore finger-controlled weaves. As I write this report, there were still three openings in the workshop, so if you are interested, don t delay any further filling out the registration form (found on page 3 of this newsletter), attaching your check for the incredibly modest amount of $12.50 and sending it to Sarah Richards address as listed on the form. In December, the program will be on Arcadian Weaving presented by our own Kathleen Cook, a Holiday Pot Luck Luncheon and member stash sale to benefit the guild. Look for more information at the November meeting and in the December newsletter. Hope to see you at the November meeting. 6

Sample Schedule We need volunteers for weaving, dyeing, and spinning samples for the newsletter. Hopefully we will always have a weaving, spinning, and dyeing sample for each newsletter. As you can see there are still some holes left in the sign up sheet. If we don't have volunteers, then we won't have samples that month. If you would like to volunteer, please let sample chairperson know. For weaving, we need two (2) samples (6 x 6 minimum, 8 x 10.5 maximum). For spinning we need two (2) samples which need to be butterflies approximately 4 yards long. The two (2) dyeing samples may be on fiber or handwoven cloth. So the size of the sample will depend on the media. The newsletter editor needs digital photos of the sample for the newsletter. Please save the photos in.jpg format and them to editor@pikespeakweavers.org. If you do not want to take the digital photos yourself, please give or send the samples to the newsletter editor to take the photos. Please contact the newsletter editor to make arrangements for the photos. Your weaving, spinning, and dyeing descriptions need to be given, mailed, or ed to the newsletter editor, at (editor@pikespeakweavers.org). The sample chairperson will print the descriptions from the newsletter for the sample notebooks in the library. If you have other information for the sample notebooks, please give it to the sample chairperson at a meeting.
