1 Sewing Tutorial pot holders Cooking and baking are fun, but anyone that has ever burned their finger on a hot baking tray knows just how important oven mitts and pot holders can be. A pot holder doesn t always have to be round or square, it can just as easily be a cute shape. Our free sewing tutorial shows you how to sew a heart-shaped pot holder. It s a great idea for a self-stitched Mother s Day gift, or a present for a close friend that loves to cook! 1

2 What you ll need Sewing pattern 1.5m bias binding 0.3m patterned cotton fabric Matching thread 0.3m plain or patterned cotton fabric Fabric scissors, paper scissors, pins and Wonder Clips 0.3m Thermolam wadding Prepare the pattern First of all, print out the pattern template Our sewing pattern consists of two pieces one is the large heart shape for the pot holder, and one is the flap We designed the pattern in two different sizes. One is for larger hands, the other is perfect for smaller hands You will need to cut two of the large heart piece, and four pieces for the flaps The large heart is symmetrical and can be cut on the fold The small piece should be cut on folded fabric so you have two sets of mirror images Simply fold your fabric twice to create four layers so you can cut all pieces out in one go Cut your fabric 2

3 Cut Thermolam wadding Cut two large heart shapes out of the Thermolam wadding Thermolam is ideal for this project: it is resistant to heat and has a medium volume, so the heat is distributed within the fleece This means your pot holder will be heatresistant Trim the edges of one Thermolam wadding heart by 0.5cm all around the edges This means that one Thermolam wadding layer is slightly smaller, making the rest of the project easier So ist eine Lage Thermolam etwas kleiner und die weitere Verarbeitung einfacher Now lay one large heart right side down, followed by the two layers of Thermolam wadding and, finally, the other large heart with its right side facing you Pin well, or use clips to hold You can now quilt this little sandwich however you like, using several lines of stitching You could use the heart shape as a reference for parallel shapes in various sizes, or use a classic grid pattern For our version, we used the pattern on our fabric as the base for our quilting Trim Thermolam wadding Layer Thermolam wadding with outer fabric Quilt the Thermolam and outer fabric together 3

4 Trim edges If the edges slipped a little while stitching, you can simply trim the edges to make sure they line up again. This will make the rest of the project easier You should now encase the long, straight edge of the half pieces for the flap with bias binding Place both layers of fabric together with wrong sides facing Now place the binding along the edge and pin Finally, edge stitch along and make sure that both sides of the bias binding are stitched equally Bias tape facing on the flap Pin both layers of fabric together Now you can assemble your pot holder Lay the two halves over the large quilted heart, making sure you line them up with the heart shape Pin all pieces together well, or use clips to hold Tack the outer edges together using a long straight stitch Now encase the outside edge with the rest of the bias binding Start on the right curve of the heart shape, and pin the bias binding evenly all the way around Bias binding edging for the pot holder 4

5 Bias binding edging for the pot holder Make sure you properly place and pin the binding around the edges. It s best if you put the pin all the way through the top and bottom layers of the binding At centre top and centre bottom, make sure you fold the bias binding and lay it neatly along the edge Pin well! If you want to be able to hang the pot holder up, you can now create and sew on a little loop made from bias binding Simply pin together an 8cm long strip of bias binding and topstitch Place the loop where the two ends of the bias binding meet Finally, sew on the bias binding and make sure that both sides are stitched equally Sew the loop Encase pot holder 5

6 Encase pot holder Watch out for wrinkles while sewing the bias Sew slowly, and remove your pins or Wonder Clips gradually as you go Your pot holder is finished! We just couldn t stop ourselves from making another! Perhaps you have other fabric combinations in mind? Finish your pot holder NOW YOUR POT HOLDER IS FINISHED! HAVE FUN! 6
