1 Quilts of Hope Project Project Coordinator: Christine Knox Ph: Supported by MitoCanada Mitochondria are considered the Powerhouse of cells and are responsible for creating more than 90% of the energy required to sustain life and support growth. Mitochondrial Diseases results from failures of the mitochondria and appear to cause damage to cells of the brain, heart, liver, skeletal muscles, kidney and the endocrine and respiratory systems. Symptoms can include some of the following & others not included: Muscular pain, weakness & tremor, eye problems, stroke-like episodes, seizures, developmental delays, depression, migraine, heat & cold intolerance, tremors, hearing loss, heart failure and irregular heart rhythms, diabetes, hypothyroidism, hypoparathyroidism, constipation, failure to grow, diarrhea, liver and kidney failure Symptoms can appear anytime in life. The severity of symptoms varies significantly and affects everyone differently. 1 in 6000 people is impacted by Mitochondrial Disease. It is estimated that less than 10% of them are diagnosed. Mitochondrial diseases are inherited from either the mother through Mitochondrial (mtdna) or Nuclear ndna (from both parents) or caused by a mutation before birth. Mitochondrial disease affects both children and adults. Research has determined strong links between mitochondrial dysfunction and other common diseases, such as Autism, Parkinson s, Alzheimer s, ALS, Diabetes, Cancer and others. This disease can be fatal and there is no cure. Currently treatment consists of a vitamin cocktail and various therapies. There is insufficient funding for research into finding a cure along with opportunities to create awareness in the medical community and the general public. Quilts of Hope Purpose and Project Goals The purpose of the Quilts of Hope Project is to raise public awareness of Mitochondrial Diseases by educating those who make and donate the quilts and those who see them.

2 The goal is to have talented quilters create quilts and donate them to those children and adults affected by Mitochondrial Disease. Quilts will be distributed to each recipient by MitoCanada or their designate. Quilts of Hope Project Guidelines & Instructions Please register your intent to make quilts for the project by ing To provide quilts for both children and adult participants in the project are requested to choose from 1 of 3 size options: Crib quilt 24 X48 approx. Lap quilt 48 X 58 approx. Quillow (Quilt that folds into a pillow) 48 X 64 approx. If you don t have the ability to make a whole quilt you could also choose to donate, fabric, thread or batting, hours of sewing, cutting, piecing, providing completed 8 X 8 squares or a quilt top, quilting (long arm or by machine). The crib or lap quilt should have a coordinating bag with strap that the quilt can travel in for easy portability in a size appropriate to the quilt. The quillow should have a strap on it so that it can be hooked over a shoulder or wheelchair. The colours should be in shades, tints or tones of the following colors; green including one bright yellow/green (see color of logo), black and white. Quilt block sizes can be the appropriate size for your design layout; however we would like the logo to be fairly large to have it be highly visible. (Recommended block finished size, minimum of 8 ) The quilt MUST have at least one square that has the Mitochondria logo on it. It can also include the word mito, MitoCanada or other words such as hope, cure, energy, awareness a green ribbon (shaped like the pink one for cancer) The logo can be created by the method of your choice, i.e. reverse appliqué, machine or needle turned appliqué, embroidery, please ensure any appliqué is stitched down well. All other blocks can be done in methods of your choice. Use your imagination! The quilt will be subject to frequent washing so quilting must be done to allow this. The quilts must be made with 100% cotton (many patients are sensitive/allergic to polyesters) All quilts MUST be labelled on the back with the following information, the name of the quilter (first name only if you prefer) or quilt organization donating the quilt, your location and the tag line MitoCanada. 4 P C U R E Quillow (has one more row of blocks than Lap Quilt) 48 X 64 Pillow Size 16 X16 Complete design & construction of quillow top & pillow. Pillow should be made as a quilt sandwich and quilted prior to assembly. You have the choice of either quilting the pillow, then adding a binding or sewing around all sides leaving an opening for turning or then quilting it. Topstitch pillow into position on two sides only leaving an opening as indicated in the drawing. Construct handle and insert it between the pillow and quilt edge. Lay batting down, lay fabric 2 down right side up, next place the right side of fabric 1 against right side of fabric 2. Sew around the outside of the whole quillow, leaving one side open about 16 for turning. Ensure all edges are caught in seam. Quilt layers together by stitching on lines drawn in picture, do not catch pillow in the stitching.
