1 Created especially for SCR-EGA: Berries So Red New from Barbara Jackson/Tristan Brooks Designs What a wonderful opportunity we have for ALL the members of the South Central Region of EGA! Our region has commissioned a special online class project that is underwritten by the Phillips Estate Education Grant (PEEG) that we received from our national organization. The grant is to be used for an educational offering that would be available to everyone in the region. But how do we select ONE class that will appeal to the diverse range of techniques enjoyed by our members? We didn t select just ONE class we found a way to select FIVE related projects that focus on different techniques and you can choose to stitch one or more of these projects. Barbara Jackson (Tristan Brooks Designs) is the talented teacher who created these projects. In an effort to reach as many people as possible, the class will be online (via computer/internet). Kits will be mailed directly to those registering. The class will be administrated by Shining Needle Society. Think of this as an opportunity to stitch up to five class projects and SCR pays the registration and teaching fees. Members are only responsible for purchasing their class kits. Note that you must be a current member of SCR-EGA to participate. 1

2 Barbara s Berries So Red project includes five individual components. You can select any number of the projects or if you can t choose, just select I want it all. 1. Stitcher s Tray construct a tray with either embroidered insides or just all cotton fabric. Linen sides are counted thread on 36-ct linen. 2. Canvas (Needlepoint) drop-in insert for Stitcher s Tray can also be used separately as a framed piece or pillow. Stitched on 18-ct mono canvas. Student transfers line-drawn design to canvas using template provided by the instructor. (Don t worry! It s erasable if you make a mistake.) 3. Strawberry counted thread on linen (36-ct linen) 4. Scissors Case crewel embroidery with design drawn on linen by the instructor (matching red Bohin preemie scissors also available) 5. Tiny Needle Keep counted thread on linen (36-ct linen) small, easily finished project suitable for all levels. Includes felted wool for needle page. Barbara uses two charming printed cotton fabrics that she obtains from a friend and quilt designer in France and these very special fabrics are included in your class kits. As far as we know, they aren t available elsewhere in the US. Very special! Pricing and kit details: I want it all option - $259: Includes all FIVE individual project kits as detailed below. Includes a discount for bundled shipping. You will make your stitching tray just like Barbara s with the canvas (needlepoint) insert and the stitched linen sides for the tray. You will also make the Strawberry, Scissors Case (with included Bohin scissors), and the Tiny Needle Keep. Kits will be mailed directly to your home. If you need stretcher bars, you do need to add those to your order. Details (and pictures!) on the five individual projects that make up our class are included on the following pages. Kit prices all include shipping within the US and SCR-EGA is generously paying the per person registration and administrative fees. Note that Tennessee residents (if any) will also be charged Tennessee Sales Tax. Members with international mailing addresses should contact Barbara directly for shipping costs to your specific location. Do you need stretcher bars for the Canvas Beehive Scene? Barbara has mini stretcher bars 9 x 10 for working the Canvas Beehive Scene. She can add these to your order for $7. Stretcher bars are strongly recommended for working the canvas project. 2

Berries So Red Stitcher s Tray with Canvas (Needlepoint) Drop-in Insert Beehive Scene Canvas Kit includes: 18-ct mono canvas (9 x10 ), several varieties of Gloriana stranded silk, Gloriana Lorikeet, Heathway crewel wool, and stranded cotton floss, needles, printed instructions and color photo. Note that this is NOT a painted canvas. Design is line drawn by the student using a template provided by the instructor. The finished insert is approx. 5 x 6. The Berries So Red Stitcher s Tray is available separately from the insert to accommodate different interests of counted thread and needlepoint. Technique: Counted Thread on Linen and Finishing Kit includes: 36-ct linen fabric, silk threads, cotton print fabrics, acid-free cardboard, silk ribbon for corner ties, tray assembly instructions, color photo. Can be all done by hand. No sewing machine required. Stitcher s Tray can be used without the Canvas Insert for those who do not do canvaswork. 3

4 Berries So Red - Strawberry Technique: Counted thread $45.00 kit cost, includes shipping in US. Kit includes: 36-ct Edinburgh linen (6 x 9 ), silk threads (Gloriana & AVAS), stranded cotton floss, felted wool for leaves, needle, magnet, color photo and written instructions. Berries So Red - Strawberry Student to provide: Student supplies stuffing of choice. Barbara recommends that this project be worked in hand or on stretcher bars. Working in a hoop is not recommended. Finished Strawberry is about 3 long. Stitches used include mosaic, queen, and cross stitch. A concealed magnet inside helps stabilize the strawberry so the right side is always up. Berries So Red Scissors Case with Red Bohin Preemie Scissors We will assume that you want the red Bohin scissors added for $22 unless you tell us otherwise. They are PERFECT in the scissors case. Berries So Red Scissors Case Technique: Crewel Embroidery $44.00 kit cost, includes shipping in US. Kit includes: Linen (5 x7 ) with design drawn on by the instructor, muslin, cotton lining, Heathway crewel wool, AVAS stranded silk, needle, magnet, color photo and written instructions. Finished Scissors Case is approximately 3 long sized for Preemie Scissors. Optional scissors case add-on: Red Bohin Preemie Scissors $22 (Total is $66 for Scissors Case Kit AND Red Bohin Preemie Scissors.) Student to provide: Stretcher bars or hoop. 4

5 Special situations: What if you are only a canvas stitcher or only a counted thread stitcher and you want to make a Stitcher s Tray? We ve thought of that too! Berries So Red Tiny Needle Keep Berries So Red - Tiny Needle Keep Technique: Counted thread $24.00 kit cost, includes shipping in US. Kit includes: 36-ct Edinburgh linen (4 x 6 ), silk threads (Gloriana & AVAS), felted wool for needle page insert, ecru cotton fabric for lining, needle, color photo and written instructions. Student to provide: Stretcher bars or hoop. Can be worked in hand. Finished Tiny Needle Keep is about 1 3/4 x2 when folded, Needle Keep is lined with ecru cotton fabric and includes a felted wool page for your needles. Stitches used include mosaic, backstitch and eyelets. If you are only a canvas stitcher, or you just want to make a tray without counted thread sides, let Barbara know that you would like the Stitcher s Tray with ONLY cotton print fabric. You will not receive the linen and silks to stitch the insides but you will receive the matching cotton fabric for those areas. This modified kit for the tray includes: cotton print fabric, acid-free cardboard, silk ribbon for corner ties, tray assembly instructions, color photo. $42 kit cost, includes shipping in US. (Note that if you want to have the Canvas (Needlepoint) Tray Insert, you still need to order that too.) The $42 kit is to ONLY make a fabric tray no embroidery is involved. Just finishing. Technique: Finishing (make a tray) Kit includes: Cotton print fabrics, acidfree cardboard, silk ribbon for corner ties, tray assembly instructions, color photo. If you don t do canvaswork, simply purchase the Stitcher s Tray kit without the Beehive Scene Drop-in Insert. 5

6 Class Timing: Important class dates are as follows: August 1 through August registration open August last day for registration October 1 -- November 15, stitching portion of online class posted November 15, 2016 January 14, class on hiatus to allow time to complete stitching portion January February 15, class reconvenes online to complete the finishing and assembly of our projects February 28, 2017 class officially ends, but online classroom remains open indefinitely for finishing up and sharing of pictures. 7 SPECIAL NOTE: If you have a friend that would like to stitch this project, please encourage them to join EGA and join a chapter in the South Central Region. We welcome new SCR members to participate in this project! Additional photos: Cotton print fabric for sides of tray --- A second coordinating cotton print fabric is used for the bottom of the tray. The canvas insert covers this area when in place. Use your tray with or without the insert. It also makes a perfect place to hide a special note commemorating your stitching finish! What if you don t have a computer? We suggest: 1. Many libraries will allow computer and printing access. 2. You may also ask a friend to print out the class messages. Class kits include basic instructions and graphs. 3. If you still have questions, kategaunt@aol.com so she can help figure out a solution for your particular situation.
