2 Lacy Canvas Scissors Case By Margaret Bendig Materials 6 x count colored canvas Stretcher bars to fit #24 Tapestry Needles 1 ball #8 Pearl Cotton- color closely matching the canvas 30 Satin Ribbon 1/8 wide 2 ½ x 8 Ultra Suede for lining, color to match the canvas Directions: The scissor case has four patterns, two on each side of the piece, with a dividing band of Plait Stitches down the center of each side. Outline: Mount the canvas on stretcher bars. To begin the border, measure 2 down from the 6 edge of the canvas and 2 in from the 12 edge to begin the Smyrna Cross outline. There are 19 Smyrna Crosses across each of the 6 edges and 68 down the 12 sides. Next, count down 32 Smyrna Crosses from each of the 6 edges and work another row of Smyrnas. These two rows will share holes. See Diagram #1 for count and Master Chart for placement. Page 5 Top Left: Row 1. Begin one thread in and two threads down from the top left corner of the outline stitches. Alternate Smyrna Crosses and vertical Goblein Stitches ( over 3 threads) for this row. Row 2. Work horizontal Gobelin Stitches over 4 threads. Row 3. Repeat Row 1 Row 4. Slanted Gobelin Stitches over 3 threads. See Diagram # 3 Row 5. 3 Top Right: Half Eyelets: Start at the top right. See Master Chart. Stitch a vertical row of Half Eyelets following Diagram #4. Come up through the canvas at the odd numbers and all even numbers go down in the center hole. Count 14 threads to the left and mirror the row of Half Eyelets. Begin and end the Eyelet row with compensated Half Eyelets. See Diagram #4 for the Eyelet Stitch count. Work a zigzag pattern of Horizontal Gobelin Stitches over 3 threads, between the rows of Half Eyelets and Eyelets. Add the French Knots along the edges of the center row of eyelets. To work the French Knots, come up in the outer edge of the large eyelet, wrap the needle twice and reenter the canvas in the same hole. See Diagram #5. NOTE: I like to count ahead and open the hole of the eyelets with an awl, this helps to keep the eyelet openings uniform. TURN THE CANVAS 180 Top Left: Row 1. Work a vertical row of Slanted Gobelin over 3 threads. See Diagram #3 and Master Chart for placement. Row 2.Alternate Mini-Eyelets with Smyrna Crosses. See Diagram #6. All even numbers go down in the center hole. Row 3. A band of Double Straight Crosses. See Diagram #7 and Master chart for placement. Row 4. Repeat Row 2 Row 5. 4 Top Right: This side is made up of an Eyelet Variation with Double-wrapped French Knots, (Diagram 5), between the elongated eyelets. See Diagram #8 for count and Master Chart for placement. Remember to come up through the canvas on the odd numbers and down in the center for all the even numbers. Center Plait Stitches: The ribbon is attached with the Plait Stitches. Before beginning, the ribbon must be plunged through the canvas. With an awl, enlarge the holes marked with the black dots on the Mater Charts. From the back of the canvas, pass the ribbon to the top of the piece and re-enter the canvas at the first horizontal row of Smyrnas, then up to the front, re-enter the canvas at the bottom dot. The ribbon ties will hang from the back of the piece. Work the Plait Stitches over the ribbon. See Diagram #9, stitch 7-8 passes under stitch 1-2 Assembly After all the stitching is completed, remove the canvas from the stretcher bars. To begin, trim away excess canvas, leaving six bare threads on all sides of the scissor case. On the outside corners, cut and remove a three-tread square of canvas. See Diagram below: Fold five threads to the back of the piece, leaving one bare thread exposed. Fold the case in half at the double row of Smyrna Crosses, right side out. 5 Because the case is small and narrow, it is best to anchor the threads for both sides before beginning the Binding Stitch. Start with a 24 to 30 length of #8 pearl cotton or floss ( 2-3 plies). Anchor the binding thread behind the double row of Smyrna Crosses. Coil the thread for the second side inside the folded scissor case. So that it will not get caught while working the first side. After folding the case in half, be sure to line up the Smyrna Crosses. If necessary, baste or pin the canvas so that it will not shift. Bring the thread out through the canvas in the middle of the first Smyrna Cross. The Binding Stitch should be worked from the fold up to the top. Now you are ready to begin the Binding Stitch. Follow Diagram #2 for directions. 1. Begin by making three Gobelin Stitches indicated by horizontal lines up to the edge of the case. 2. Next follow the numbering sequence of Diagram #2. Continue up to the top of the scissors case, compensating at the top and end with a double Gobelin Stitch to secure the seam. Secure the thread behind the Smyrna Crosses on the side of the case. 3. Repeat the Binding Stitch up the other side of the case. 4. Fold the bare canvas threads at the top of the case down into the case. 5. Fold the lining ( Ultra Suede ) in half, 2 ½ edges together, and slip down into the scissor case. Carefully ease the lining down and overlap the edgees, being sure to cover the canvas. If the lining is too bulky down in the corners, remove and carefully trim away, until the lining is smooth. 6. With a single ply of floss to match the lining, blind stitch the lining to the top of the scissors case. Your Lacy Canvas Scissors Case is now complete ----enjoy!!!
