CONTENTS: Supply List... 1 Puzzle Instructions... 1 Pocket Instructions... 4 Pages 1 and Pocket Assembly... 7 Bag Assembly... 8 Resources... 9 SUPPLY LIST: Tear-away stabilizer 2-10 x 14 pieces of fleece for pages 1 and x 14 piece of felt for the puzzle 1-5 x 5 piece of felt for the pocket 2-7 x 9 pieces of fabric for the bag lining 4 x 4 fabric scraps for the appliqués 4-4 x 4 pieces of double-sided fusible web (like Steam-A-Seam2 fusible web) 1-27 length of ribbon for the pocket 1-18 handle 1-14 length of rick rack 1 snap Size 80/12 sharp embroidery needle Size 80/12 universal sewing needle Bobbin thread Embroidery thread Small embroidery nips Regular sharp scissors Fray Check Rotary cutter and cutting mat ⅛ hole punch Hammer Tapestry needle PUZZLE INSTRUCTIONS 1 1. Hoop the 10 x 14 piece of felt without stabilizer. Use bobbin thread that matches your felt. 2. Sew the first color - the placement line for the bottom of the heart box. Use whatever top thread color you would like to be seen on the heart box. 3. Place a piece of double-sided fusible web on the back of the appliqué fabric, and place the fabric right side up over the placement line. Valentine Puzzle Bag 1

2 4. Gently hold the fabric patch in place, and sew the next color - the cutting line. You do not need to change threads! 5. Use small embroidery nips to trim the fabric around the cutting line. Because this puzzle will be cut apart, there is not an appliqué finish. So, trim evenly, as this edge will be seen! 6. Sew the placement line for the inside of the heart box (color 3). 7. Place fabric (with fusible web on the back) over the placement line. 8. Gently hold the fabric in place, and sew the cutting line (color 4). 9. Trim the fabric evenly around the cutting line. 10.Sew the light chocolate (color 5). Trim the jump threads. 11.Sew the milk chocolate (color 6). Trim the jump threads. 12.Sew the dark chocolate (color 7.) Trim the jump threads. Valentine Puzzle Bag 2

3 13.Sew the pink icing (color 8). Trim the jump threads. 14.Sew the white icing (color 9). Trim the jump threads. 15.Sew the placement line for the top of the box (color 10). 16.Place fabric backed with fusible web over the placement line and sew the cutting line (color 11). 17.Trim the fabric around the cutting line. 18.Sew the placement line for the doily on the top of the box (color 12). 19.Place fabric backed with fusible web over the placement and sew the cutting line (color 13). 20.Trim the fabric around the cutting line. 21.Sew the dots on the top of the box (color 14). 4 22.Sew the squiggles and You re So Sweet (color 15). Trim the jump threads. 23.Sew the puzzle pieces (color 16). 24.Unhoop the puzzle and trim the felt around the square. 25.Carefully cut the puzzle pieces apart. Cut right in the center between the pieces as shown. Do not trim the pieces after you are done. They will fit together exactly as you cut them. Stabilizer 1. Hoop a piece of tear-away stabilizer. Valentine Puzzle Bag 4

5 2. Sew the placement line on the stabilizer (color 1). 3. Place a piece of felt over the placement line. 4. Gently hold the felt in place and sew the cutting line (color 2). 5. Use small embroidery nips to trim the felt around the placement line. Trim close, but do not cut the stitches! 6. Sew the finish for the pocket (color 3). 7. Sew the light chocolate (color 4). 8. Sew the milk chocolate and the word chocolates (color 5). Trim all jump threads before sewing the next color. 9. Sew the dark chocolate icing (color 6). 10. Sew the pink icing and the word sweet (color 7). Valentine Puzzle Bag 5

6 11. Sew the words This box of and is so (color 8). Pocket - Color Chart 1 Placement line for pocket 2 Cutting line for pocket 3 Finish for pocket 4 Light Brown - Light chocolate 5 Brown - Milk chocolate 6 Dark Brown - Dark chocolate 7 Dark Pink - Sweet and chocolate trimming 8 Light Pink - This.. and is 9 Black - Eyelets 12. Sew the eyelets (color 9). 13. Unhoop the pocket and trim the stabilizer around the pocket. Do not cut too close to the stitching! If you do accidentally clip the stitches, apply a drop of Fray Check to the back of the stitching. 14. Use a hammer and hole punch to punch open the eyelets. PAGES 1 AND 2 (Front and Back of the Puzzle Bag) 3 1. For each page, hoop a piece of fleece with tear-away stabilizer. 2. Embroider the design according to the color charts shown below. 3. Take each page out of the machine, and trim them so that they measure 7 x9 with the embroidered design in the center. 7 POCKET ASSEMBLY 4 1. Use a ⅛ hole punch and hammer to punch out the eyelets on page 1. If you do not have a hole punch set, I highly recommend getting one! They are about $5 and very handy to have for many projects. 2. Sew the top of a snap on the back of the pocket in the snap guide at the top. 3. Sew the bottom of the snap on the front of Page 1 in the snap guide. 4. Place a drop of Fray Check on the back of the snaps. This will keep the stitching from coming undone. 5. Thread 3/4 yd of ribbon (27 ) through the eyelets on the pocket. Use a tapestry needle to help push the ribbon through the holes. You could also use a string of beads as shown, rick rack, or other trim Start with the top right hole on the pocket, and thread the ribbon down through the hole. Leave a 7 tail. Thread the ribbon back up through the next hole. Follow this pattern until you come to the 5th hole. 5th hole 7. Place the heart on top of page 1, and thread the ribbon down the 5th hole through the pocket AND the eyelet on page 1. Continue weaving the ribbon through the eyelets on the pocket and page 1 around the heart. When you run out of eyelets on page 1, continue threading the ribbon through the eyelets on the pocket. 8. Tie a bow or knot in the ribbon. Trim the ends of the ribbon to the desired length. Valentine Puzzle Bag 7

8 BAG ASSEMBLY 5 Pages 1 and 2 are the front and back of the puzzle bag. Page 2 is an outline of the puzzle, and kids can use it to help them put the puzzle together if they wish. If you haven t done so already, cut both pages so that they measure 7 x 9 with the design centered on the page. Page 1 - Front of bag Page 2 - Back of bag 1. Place pages 1 and 2 right sides together. 2. Stitch around the sides and bottom. Use a ½ seam allowance. 3. Clip the corners. Turn the bag right side out. Lining 4. Beginning at a side seam, baste rick rack around the top of the bag. Use a ¼ seam allowance. Angle the ends of the rick rack so that they will be hidden in the seam allowance 5. Tack down the ends of the handle at the side seams. The raw edges of the handle should match up with the top of the bag. 6. Place the two lining pieces in your kit right sides together, and sew the side seams. Use a ½ seam allowance at the top, and slightly taper the seams in as you sew toward the bottom. 9 7. Leave the lining turned inside out, and slip it over the bag (pages 1 and 2) so that the right sides are together. 8. Stitch around the top of the bag. Use a ½ seam allowance. 9. Open out the lining, and fold the raw edges along the bottom of the lining under ½. Topstitch the bottom of the lining closed. 10. Tuck the lining inside the bag, and press the seam along the top so that the rick rack is standing up. 11. Place the puzzle pieces in the pocket, and fill the bag with candy for a fun gift.
