A pattern designed by unikatissima Square 'n' Fair - Margarethe This document contains the pattern/diagram for the crochet square Margarethe and provides several matching patterns/diagrams to this square ('elements'). Additionally I have included several ideas on how to combine the different elements and project ideas about what to do with the elements. Because different terms are used for the same stitches in British and American English, you can find descriptions of the used stitches in order to easily identify them. Please note that I have spent quite a long time to compile this document and be so kind as to observe the terms of use. Have fun! Content Square 'n' Fair - Margarethe 1 Terms of use 2 Patterns / Diagrams 3 Combinations 7 Used Stitches 8 Symbols, terms, abbreviations 8 Magic ring 8 Chain 8 Single crochet 9 Half treble 9 Treble 10 Slip stitch 10 Double treble 11 Project ideas 12 Use different materials 12 Make different items 13 Page 1 of 13
Terms of use Terms of use All content (text, pictures, diagrams etc) of this document is protected by copyright. This document/file is for your use only. You may - crochet items from my diagrams and - sell the finished items (but not mass produce), - print a copy of this file for your personal use only and - set a link to the blog entry to tell friends of this document; - not share this file: - no (re)sale of file or printed copies of this document, - no distribution for free or loan, nor digitally nor on paper, - no publication in internet (e.g. forums, blogs, etc) or any other medium; - not mass produce items with patterns based on my diagrams*, - not claim the patterns as your own and - not distribute for free or loan your own designs based on my diagrams. * What is mass production: If you design an item based on my diagrams you may produce and sell up to 30 of those items, e.g. up to 30 equal scarves with the same pattern based on my diagrams, up to 30 tops with the same pattern based on my diagrams and so forth. It would be great if you gave credit to unikatissima, e.g. in the form of design of square by unikatissima, design of top/afghan/scarf by me - I really would appreciate this! Thank you. If you have any questions about the terms of use please drop me an unikatissima@gmx.de Page 2 of 13
Patterns / Diagrams Patterns / Diagrams The elements are designed to be connected while working (not to be crocheted and sewn afterwards) at the corners and the edges (see also section Combinations). I changed colours from row to row to make the diagrams more readable.! Used stitches Please note that the terms of the stitches are not clear, because they differ in British and American English. I therefore show photos of the used stitches below to identify the stitches I used. Square - Diagram and photo The half squares are designed to fill the gaps ;-) (see e.g. the section Combinations) Half square, rectangular - Diagram and photo Page 3 of 13
Patterns / Diagrams Half square, triangular - Diagram and photo The squeezed square can be used e.g. for the sides of a tote or for broad ribbons. Squeezed square - Diagram and photo Page 4 of 13
Patterns / Diagrams The so-called ribbons are designed to be used e.g. as straps for tops, but also as filling, if the pattern is slightly too small for an item or as basic pattern where the square patterns can stand out. The word Pattern in the diagram means the part that can be repeated at will. Matching ribbon 1 - Diagram and photo The diagrams for examples of ribbon 1 and 2 show possible repetitions of the Pattern part in the main diagram. Diagrams for examples of ribbon 1 Page 5 of 13
Patterns / Diagrams Matching ribbon 2 - Diagram and photo Diagrams for examples of ribbon 2 Page 6 of 13
Combinations Combinations Here you find some inspiration on how to combine the elements from the section Patterns/ Diagrams. Also take a look at the project ideas where you find inspiration/combinations for items like scarves, tops or a tote. Combine the squares and half squares in different ways. Beneath you see pictures on how it could look (the pictures are digitally made and only meant as inspiration). Page 7 of 13
Used Stitches Used Stitches Because there are often translation problems concerning the stitches I'm showing photos and description here to make sure that you can identify the used stitches. This is not meant to be a crochet tutorial! Use the links to check the stitches: Magic ring - Chain - Single crochet - Half treble - Treble - Double treble - Slip stitch Symbols, terms, abbreviations Magic ring Lay the yarn in a loop as if making a knot, enter the hook into the loop, catch the working thread with the hook and pull through the loop. Now you have the first stitch in the ring. Continue in the same way. When the 1st row is finished, you can pull at the end of the thread and the ring will close. If working in rounds join the row then. Chain One loop is on the hook. Catch the working thread with the hook and pull through the loop on hook. Page 8 of 13
Used Stitches Single crochet One loop is on the hook. Insert hook into the stitch of previous row, catch the working thread with the hook and pull through the stitch. You have now two loops on the hook. Catch the working thread again and pull through both loops. Half treble Yarn over the working thread, then insert hook into the stitch of previous row, catch the working thread with the hook and pull through the stitch. You have now three loops on the hook. Catch the working thread again and pull through all three loops at once. Page 9 of 13
Used Stitches Treble Yarn over the working thread, then insert hook into the stitch of previous row, catch the working thread with the hook and pull through the stitch. You have now three loops on the hook. Catch the working thread again and pull through the first two loops, you have two loops on the hook. Catch the working thread again and pull through both loops. Slip stitch This stitch is used to join the rows as well as to 'walk' the length of one side of the triangular half square. Insert hook into the stitch of previous row, catch the working thread with the hook and pull through the stitch and the loop on hook. Page 10 of 13
Used Stitches Double treble Yarn over twice the working thread, then insert hook into the stitch of previous row, catch the working thread with the hook and pull through the stitch. You now have four loops on the hook. Catch the working thread again and pull through the first two loops, you have three loops on the hook. Catch the working thread again and pull through the first two loops, you have two loops on the hook. Catch the working thread again and pull through both loops. Page 11 of 13
Project ideas Project ideas Use different materials There are so many materials you could use: - thick wool yarns - middle acryl yarns - fine cotton yarns - embroidery floss - raffia - package string - gift ribbon / gift curling ribbon - yarn made from plastic bags - Examples of squares in different threads: Acrylic yarn Cotton thread Package string Square crocheted in different colours The different sizes depending on the yarn Page 12 of 13
Project ideas Make different items And there are so many items you can make from crochet squares: - Clothing - Sweaters / vests / tops / cardigans - Scarves / shawls / headbands - Hats / mittens / wristwarmers - Skirts - Aprons - Accessories for you - Purses / wallets / totes - Scrunchies - Collars / appliqués - Book covers / journal covers - Accessories for home - Tablecloths / place mats / glass coasters - Pillows / pillow belts - Curtains / window decorations / door decorations - Bedthrows / afghans - More (much more! ) - Ornaments for greeting cards Possible combination for top (squares and ribbon) Possible combination for tote (without strap) (squares and squeezed squares) Pillow belts (squares) Possible combinations for scarves Page 13 of 13
