1 NEVADA PROFICIENCY EVENTS PROGRAM Fiber Art, an individual event, recognizes participants who develop skills in sewing construction needlecraft to develop creative abilities knowledge in constructing attractive projects. Examples include, but are not limited to, quilt, needlepoint, cross-stitch, bags, purses, pillows, stuffed animals, etc. EVENT DIVISIONS Junior: through grade 9 Senior 1: grades 1-12 (1 st year) Senior Advanced: grades 1-12 (2 nd year or more) ELIGIBILITY 1. Participation is open to any Nevada state affiliated FCCLA chapter member. 2. The Fiber Art project must be developed completed within a one-year span beginning the day following the previous state conference ending the day of competition. PROCEDURES & TIME REQUIREMENTS 1. Evaluators will have ten (1) minutes to interview participant. 2. After the evaluation, each participant will display item for public viewing (Spotlight on Projects). GENERAL INFORMATION 1. A table will be provided. Participant must bring all other necessary supplies /or equipment. 2. Spectators may not observe any portion of this event. 3. Manuals, scrapbooks, photo albums are not allowed in this event. 4. Participants must be dressed appropriately professionally. 3. 2 Specifications Clean Neat 4 x 6 Information 4 x 6 Commentary Oral Questions Design Selection of Materials Accuracy Corners /Edges Finishes/Seams Closure/Stuffing Needlecraft Quilt Unnoticeable pencil/chalk marks, no stray markings or unclipped threads. When quilt is displayed, both sides hang evenly One 4 x6 note card, must include participant s name, division, chapter, name of project One typed note card containing a detailed description of the project Provide clear concise answers to evaluators regarding project All colors shapes are in harmony; of good design: Elements: Demonstrate knowledge of the of design (color, line, shape, texture, space) Principles: Demonstrate knowledge of the of design (balance, rhythm, proportion, emphasis, harmony) Appropriate for specified use Fabric is cut appropriately for the design; clean accurate cuts, all materials appropriately Corners meet /lay evenly, points are even Endpoints clean tight; seams are not loose; tension is correct secure tight. Closure unnoticeable; stuffing evenly distributed Needlecraft backs clean neatly finished; few loops, crossovers, etc. Binding is secure, even, applied appropriately filled to the edge; no residual markings, unclipped threads, back panels constructed appropriately Fiber Art P a g e 2
