1 Women s Set-in Cardigan Sweater SweaterMaker for Windows charted this shirt for machine knitters. It is a simple women s sweater with a V-neck, a good beginning knitter s project. There is just enough shaping to be interesting, but not overwhelming. Here are the specific design settings for this shirt. Size: women s 44 Body: set-in sleeves Front: cardigan Neck: V-neck Hem: picot hem (at waist and wrist) Trim: 1x1 single-thickness rib (around the neck) Customizing: I made the V-neck deeper. 12 Page 12 of 13 Produced using SweaterMaker from Seedling Software page 8 F I N I S H I N G JOIN ONE SHOULDER. With right side facing, hang the body's right shoulder sts on the MB. Push the sts behind the latches. With wrong side facing, hang the right front shoulder sts on those same needles in FRONT of the latches. Pull the front st through the back st, then BO. CARDIGAN BAND On a V-neck sweater, there is only one cardigan band. It starts at the bottom of the hem ribbing on one side of the body, wraps around the neck, then goes all the way down to the bottom of the other hem. Therefore, the cardigan band itself comprises the V-neck trim. The band is knitted in full needle rib, so be sure to set your machine to half-pitch (or you may break some needles). It's knitted at a very tight tension (the hem tension you specified will be ignored in these directions), so that it lays nice, flat, and evenly across the wearer's body. However, this may mean that you must pull out your needles on every row to be sure all sts are knitted. Fashion reminder: On a woman's garment, the RIGHT side of the band is the buttonhole band. The buttonhole side will be knitted FIRST. The band will be 1.05 Inches wide and Inches long. NOTE: On the INSide of the band (that is, the side that will be sewn to the sweater), bring 1 extra needle on the MB to WP. This is the band's sew-up st. RC000, T0/0. Set machine for full-needle rib. Bring 15 sts (MB: n[-4..4]; RB: n[-3..4]) to WP. K the zig-zag row and hang comb. Set carriage to circular rib and K 3 rows, ending with COR. RC000, T3/3. Set carriage to K all sts and hang one or two light weights. K 1018 rows in FNR and AT THE SAME TIME do the following: 1. Insert a buttonhole on rows 8, 55, 103, 150, and 198. Do this by transferring the sts on n[-1] and n[1] to n[-2] and n[2], respectively, on the MB. Do the same on the ribber. That will leave a nice little 4-stitch-wide hole. Leave the needles in WP and continue knitting. When you're done, transfer sts to MB (hang them on the needles already in WP) and scrap off. 2. Mark the edge sts of work on RC Mark rows 820, 868, 915, 963, and 1010 for buttons.

Sew buttons to the band on the marked rows. Join both sleeves to the garment, sew side and sleeve seams, and hide tails.
