2 How to Use This LilyGiggle Pattern Step 1 - Be sure that your printer settings say to NOT scale or reduce/enlarge images. THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT. Please see your printer owner s manual if you need help with this step. Our pages are set up with a 1/2 border (at least) around all pages, so you should be able to print the entire page without anything getting cropped off. Again - PRINT EVERYTHING at 100%. You can read the tutorial on your electronic device and print only the pattern pieces you want - or you can print the whole shebang. Step 2 - Sort it all out. Our pages are numbered and sequenced, and keeping them in order is reasonably important. Step 3 - Separate the pattern pages from the tutorial pages. The tutorial pages have the LilyGiggle logo and website at the bottom. The pattern pages have a lighter, thinner blue outline. Step 4 - Cut out the pattern pages. Cut around the light blue, dashed border. Step 5 - Line up the pattern. We use dots at the corners of the pages in order to help you align everything and get it all put together properly. We re also including a diagram below to help out. If you match stuff up and you have a dot that is one color on one half and another color on the other, you ve got them wrong. It should be pretty easy. Step 5 - Tape everything together. Putting it all on one side and then turning it over and taping on the back helps keep everything in place. Be sure to run your tape from edge to edge of the whole pattern so that when you cut everything out, it stays together where it s supposed to. 3 The Little Big Pants are my favorite simple pants pattern. The design has been kept as fuss free as possible to ensure this is one that can be whipped up lickety-split to add a touch of charm under any young lady s pretty little frock. With their refined flat front waistband they can easily stand alone as pants as well. The cropped length makes them season-less. I love them in corduroy or other bottom weight fabric with a pair of boots for fall and winter or in cotton or linen for the warmer months. A great blank slate to embellish as you desire. This is a great pattern to use recycled fabrics, too! I used a crisp white cotton sheet with a lovely eyelet edge on the above pair. It makes for a beautiful detailed touch without any extra sewing, not even a hem! I love to breathe new life into unused items whenever possible. Get creative and think about using a pretty pillowcase, a curtain with a detailed edge, or a man s dress shirt. The smallest sizes can even be made out of a bed skirt or window valance. 4 This LilyGiggle pattern is based on the following body measurements. Use your child s measurements to determine size. If your child s hip measurement is larger than the one stated for her age I suggest going up a size and adjusting the length. 5 Since children come in all sorts of shapes and sizes, use the following instructions to customize your patterns for a perfect fit. Find the waist measurement that most closely matches your child (go up if in between) and then cut all pattern pieces out in that size but adjusting the length to the age or normal clothing size of the child. For instance, if the waist measurement of your normally sized 3 year child matches that of 5 years on the size chart then cut out all pattern pieces at size 5 years but cut the length of the pieces at 3 years. The diagram below shows how to do this. The bold red line is highlighting where to cut. To cut down on printing out your pattern pieces and taping them all together each time you want to sew a different size. You can trace the size you want to make from the original pattern onto freezer paper first. Love this stuff and you can get it just about anywhere! Be sure to transfer all relevant markings, including how many pieces to cut out, size & hem allowance. lilygiggle.etsy.com TUTORIAL PAGE 4

6 ~ Wash and dry all fabric before cutting. This will remove sizing (the chemicals sprayed on the fabric during manufacturing to keep it all crisp) and keep your finished garment from shrinking. ~This pattern uses a 3/8 seam allowance. The seam allowance is already added to the pattern pieces. 1. Fold fabric in half, selvedge to selvedge. Place pattern pieces as shown and cut out. ***If you are recycling a piece of fabric with a pretty edging that you want to leave intact, you will want to eliminate the hem allowance on the pattern before cutting. I do this by simply folding up 1 all along the bottom of the pattern before placing it on my fabric easy peasy. lilygiggle.etsy.com TUTORIAL PAGE 5

7 Before cutting your pieces from yardage, lay your fabric flat then follow these steps referring to the cutting diagrams above. 1. Place your FRONT AND BACK PANTS pattern piece on fabric as shown. Cut out. 2. Place it down again, as shown, and cut out. 3. Fold the remaining fabric in half, towards the selvedge, and cut the WAISTBAND pattern pieces out. Remember to line them up on the fold of the fabric. Don t forget lilygiggle.etsy.com TUTORIAL PAGE 6

8 1. After you have carefully cut out the pants and waistband pieces, it is time to put them together. Begin by laying out your FRONT & BACK PANTS piece with the right side facing up. Lay the other FRONT & BACK PANTS piece directly on top of it with the right side of the fabric facing down. This is called right sides together. Pin the curved edges of the front and back rise (both curved edges). 3. Press the seams open and finish the raw edges with your preferred method. You may use a serger, your sewing machine s overlock stitch, a zig zag stitch or pinking shears. If using a serger then do not press open, press towards the back. Now the bloomers should look something like this 2. Now stitch them together. The inseam is still open at this point. lilygiggle.etsy.com TUTORIAL PAGE 7

9 4. Still working with the right sides together, find the front crotch seam and the back crotch seam, match them up and pin securely. Pin down each inside leg seam as well. 7. Sew along each pinned edge. Press the seams open (no need to finish these seams) 5. Sew the pinned inseams. Press your seam. 6. Now it s time for the waistband. Begin by placing one waistband piece on top of the other with right sides together. Pin the short edges. 8. Now fold the waistband in half lengthwise and press. lilygiggle.etsy.com TUTORIAL PAGE 8

10 9. Lay your bloomers out flat and find the fold at the top corner of the outside edge of the pants. 11. Pin the waistband all the way around. 10. With the 2 layers of the open long edge of the waistband lined up with the top of the pants, match up the side seams of the waistband with each top corner. 12. Using a 3/8 seam allowance, begin sewing the waistband to the pants all the way around the pinned edge but be sure to leave a one inch opening at either end of the front of the pants. This is where you will insert the elastic. The arrows in the photo show where to leave the openings. You can determine the front of the pants because it is lower than the back when looking at the waist. lilygiggle.etsy.com TUTORIAL PAGE 9

11 Press the seam downward. 13. Cut a piece of elastic 2 smaller than half of your child s waist measurement. Put a large safety pin on one end of it. 14. Insert the elastic into one of the openings towards the back waistband of the pants. 15. Pull the elastic through the back waistband of the pants. Before the tail of the elastic is pulled through the opening, stop pulling or else it will get lost inside the casing. Carefully push the tail into the opening of the waistband casing and maneuver it so that it is behind the side seam nearest the opening. The elastic should be placed so that the end of it is about ½ into the front waistband of the pants. You can see this overlap if you look closely to the right side of the seam in the photo below. 12 16. Stitch in the ditch to secure it. If unfamiliar with that term it simply means to stitch right over the seam line. I like to carefully go back and forth several times to make sure that elastic is secure. You must make sure that the elastic is completely behind the seam or else you won t catch it in your stitching. Now, if you recycled something with a pretty edge at the bottom Guess what??? If you don t have that nice pretty finished edge just yet no worries. You just need to turn your pants inside out. Press the bottom of the pants ½ towards the inside all the way around. Turn them ½ towards the inside once again, pin, then sew, stitching close to the inside edge as shown below. 17. Now that one side is secure, continue pulling the elastic through the back casing until you reach the other opening in the front. Once again, pin the elastic so that ½ of it extends beyond the side seam into the front portion of the waistband. You will do this through the front opening. 14 Before cutting out the pattern from a shirt, stitch the button placket closed. You may also need to carefully remove any pockets with a seam ripper. Place pattern as shown. The button placket should be directly under the center of the pattern piece. Be sure that it is placed so that you won t be cutting through any buttons.
