1 Oklahoma City Program Volume X, Issue 5 January 2014 Shibori -- Patterned by a String January's presentation by Irma Braun-Hampton is promising some hands-on enjoyment. It also requires that our meeting be conducted in three parts: Fun--business--fun. In step one Irma will do a quick presentation of how to go about the small Shibori project and explain the few tools needed. Everyone then gets to fold, tie, and paint their 12"x12" piece. Step two is letting our mini art work dry while going over the business part. Step three is for undoing the string and revealing (surprise!) the finished piece. There will be two patterns to choose from. Working with the silk may be perceived as a challenge by some. Actually, it is a tactile pleasure, even when trying to tame the slippery fabric at the very beginning. A trick or two helps getting it all done. Irma will also show a few examples of silk items she has made from painted and dyed squares. Remember Oklahoma City will be starting the New Year at their new meeting location, Oklahoma Contemporary, 3000 General Pershing Blvd. The meeting scheduled for January 9th begins at 7 pm. FAO Officers President - Pat Brant Treasurer Barbara Klein Membership Karen Rose Programs Ok City Sue Moss Sullivan & Sara Braden Programs Tulsa Janet Hoeltzel & Terri Higgs Secretary Ok City Karen Collier Secretary Tulsa Carol Oxford FiberWorks 2014 Karen Collier & Janice Filler Newsletter Editor Lyn Lucas Hyperbolic Crochet Tulsa January Program Jan Hawks will teach participants how to use basic crochet stitches to create 3 dimensional forms out of colorful skeins of yarn. These decorative forms can be stand-alone sculptures or incorporated into other works of art such as purses, jewelry or scarves. See page four for a list of supplies to bring. Be sure to also bring your show and tell! The Tulsa FAO group will meet at 6:00 pm, Tuesday, January 14th, at The B-Sew Inn, located in the Farm Shopping Center at 51st and South Sheridan.
2 Page 2 From President Pat Brant Journaling takes many forms and serves many purposes. Ten years ago a dear friend gave me a ten year journal. This became a historical journal devoted to my family. An artist I know records each day s artistic activity whether it is research, reading, or making a sample. I love to touch the heavy white paper in a traditional art journal. However, the new, blank pages intimidate me. So, my first entry is made on a page in the middle of the book. I do have a book with fabric swatches, project notes, and inspirational pictures. However, my favorite is a journal the size of a stenographer s notebook, which I carry everywhere I go. This art journal is a collection of ready to wear pattern sketches with fabric requirements, samples of yarn for future projects, and notes about how I folded the fabric for a recent ice dying project. I take the journal to a favorite place in northeastern Oklahoma and record the color pallet of each season. I record the architectural grids of cell phone towers, fences, building facades, etc. Another traditional journaling technique is to write whatever comes to mind. For each of us writing it down works differently. My friends will smile when they read that for me writing a list or observations is calming, empowering. But, what if you don t want someone to read your journal pages? When our daughter voiced this concern, her husband remarked, Why worry? No one can read your handwriting! Another option was mentioned in Cloth, Paper, Scissors. Each day the artist writes three pages and then cuts or tears the pages into pieces. The fragmented words are incorporated into her art, particularly her encaustic works. I view journaling as a creative process. Whether journaling is recording thoughts and events, experimenting with new art techniques, or developing a reference book, the result is unique, one-of-a-kind art. I have a new journal labeled The first entry near the middle is a zen doodle. Happy New Year! PlayDate January 18th Bill Westcott will lead us in making watercolor cards. Bill will provide the paint and the paper but needs you to bring: a couple of small round and a ½ or ¾ flat paint brushes; a roll of ¾ or larger masking tape; a foam board just large enough to tape a couple of 5 X 7 cards to it; and a container for water. If you have an Exacto knife also bring that along. Please come even if you do not have all of the supplies, as we will make do and share. The location for January s PlayDate has yet to be announced, be sure to look for the with that information later this month. It will be on January 18th from 10 am to 2 pm and as usual, bring $10 for supplies, a bag lunch, any show and tell, and your creative spirit. Any questions? Call Kate Kline at
3 Volume X, Issue 5 Page 3 FiberWorks 2014 As we explained last month, the 2014 FiberWorks entries will be submitted online, through a secure web form on the FAO website. Because this is different than the inperson entry process we have used in years past, we are providing advance information, tips and helpful hints in the newsletter to assist entrants in getting ready for a successful FiberWorks entry process. As a reminder, the show in 2014 will be held in OKC and the opening will be May 16th. Entries, online form and digital image submission, will be due at the end of April. Absolute deadlines and dates for all parts of the process will be published in next month's newsletter. IMPORTANT: Plan on having your entries completed and photographed no later than the last week of April, 2014, for timely submission. You should submit 1 or 2 photographic image files along with each entry. We suggest submitting 2 images per entry (1 overall, and 1 detail for 2-D pieces OR 2 different angles/views of a 3-D item). Each image file must conform to these specifications: Image files must be JPG or JPEG format. No other file formats will be accepted. Images must measure no larger than 1800 pixels on the longest side at high resolution (300 ppi) The overall image of 2-D art should be photographed with horizontal edges level and "straight on" rather than at an angle. It helps to use a tripod and adequate lighting to keep images sharp. Image editing should be limited to cropping, and cropped pictures must show the edges of the work. Photographic images must present a realistic image of the actual work. FAO will reserve the right to reject any entry that is submitted with images that do not adequately and fairly represent the piece. (This does not mean that the images have to be perfect, but they cannot be "Photoshopped" or otherwise altered to make the entry look different than it does when viewed in person. Use your good sense and best efforts, and you'll be fine.) Both FAO chapters in Oklahoma City and Tulsa are scheduling upcoming photography workshops to assist members and entrants in learning how to better photograph their work. Opportunities to have your pieces photographed will also be available. If you have questions or would like to volunteer for FiberWorks 2014 publicity and other activities, please contact Karen Collier (karenlcollier@cox.net) or Janice Filler (fillja@cox.net). Happy New Year!
4 Page 4 Hyperbolic Crochet Supplies Everyone should bring some knitting worsted weight yarn (like Red Heart). Color doesn't matter and a skein of one color will suffice to start the learning process. A smooth yarn is the best for learning the basic stitches, not one with "slubs" nor a bulky yarn. The knitting worsted weight will work best with a size "G" hook so please bring that as well as some scissors. For those who don't have a stash of yarn or hooks, Jan can supply a "starter kit" for $5.00. Anyone who is wanting a kit should Jan by January 5th at: janhawks@sbcglobal.net. Additional crochet instructions will be sent to all FAO members prior to the meeting. Woven Treasures by Madeline Benham A few members of the Handweavers Guild of Oklahoma City met Saturday, December 14 at the Oklahoma History Center. Joan and Tom Galbraith arranged for Amy Hildebrand, Curator of Collections, to meet us in the basement and show us some of the museum's treasures: old woven coverlets. We watched Amy put on gloves and unroll the coverlets from the cotton sheets in which they are stored. Someone brought a magnifying lens so we could examine things closely. For some of the pieces, Ms. Hildebrand was able to provide a date. One was dated as early as Some of the people attending were spinners and were able to tell us whether a given yarn was commercial or hand spun. The hand spun yarns showed more variation in the twist. Typically, the warp was commercial flax and the weft was handspun wool. We saw examples of doubleweave, summer and winter, and jacquard woven coverlets. Most of the coverlets were woven in strips, possibly because the looms on which they were woven were not wide enough for entire coverlets. (In the small houses built in those days, it seems, looms were often stored in the barn during the winter and on the porch during the summer.) The dyes used were probably indigo and madder, but someone thought it was possible cochineal had been used for one of them. One of the most striking pieces featured a black yarn that generated a lot of discussion. Since dyes were both expensive and hard to use at the time, did the black wool come from a black sheep? In some geographic locations, would the black wool on sheep fade to brown? We all agreed the workmanship of these coverlets was wonderful. We were fortunate that the Oklahoma Historical Society was willing to share these with us.

The original Salon des Refusés was an art exhibition that took place in Paris in 1863, showing works that had been rejected by the official Paris Salon. That year artists protested vehemently after so many paintings were rejected (only 2,217 paintings out of the more than 5,000 submitted were accepted), and Emperor Napoleon III ordered a special exhibition be held at which rejected artists could display their works. Hence the name, Salon des Refusés. Today by extension, salon des refusés refers to any exhibition of works rejected from a juried art show. The exhibit at MEME Gallery Tulsa is open to all artists and all media. Each artist may submit one 2D and one 3D work of art that was not accepted to any juried show in Oklahoma during Artwork may be delivered January 2-4, 2014 during regular gallery hours or by appointment. MEME Gallery is located at the southwest corner of Xanthus Place and 11th Street in Tulsa.

Skill levels of members range from novice to expert, with some members experimenting as hobbyists, and others working as professionals. Members of FAO participate in various activities during the year to encourage, support, and inform persons interested in fiber art. The organization promotes FiberWorks, a major juried fiber art show featuring Oklahoma artists. Held each year, FiberWorks is now a nationally respected fiber show. Fiber Artists of Oklahoma was formerly the Handweavers League of Oklahoma, the name chosen in 1976 by a group of hand weavers who first met in Norman, Oklahoma. Officers were elected, by-laws were written and the first newsletter was published. In 1984 the group began meeting in Oklahoma City and became a statewide organization. A Certificate of Incorporation to become a non-profit [501(c)(3)] group was filed and approved in In 1978, the organization initiated FiberWorks, a major juried fiber art show that has been held each year since. The Handweavers League was renamed Fiber Artists of Oklahoma in 2006 to better reflect the broader focus of the organization. A Tulsa group was formed in The Oklahoma City group meets the second Thursday of the month at Oklahoma Contemporary, 3000 Pershing Boulevard. The meeting begins at 7 pm. The Tulsa group meets the second Tuesday of the month at B-Sew Inn, located in the Farm Shopping Center, 51st & South Sheridan. The meeting begins at 6 pm.
