Original Recipe Flights of Nature by Charlie Scott Hello, Moda maniacs. I'm back with my second quickie quilt. This time it's a super sized quilt quickie using one Moda layer cake.

1 Original Recipe Flights of Nature by Charlie Scott Hello, Moda maniacs. I'm back with my second quickie quilt. This time it's a super sized quilt quickie using one Moda layer cake. I would like to introduce you to Qubee Quilt mascot Clyde Frog. I just could not keep Clyde out of the pictures. That little ham has laid claim to this quilt and thinks that it's his. He will just have to share. Ingredients: 1 Layer Cake (Cherish Nature featured) 1 1/8 yards Outer Border 1/2 yard Inner border 1/2 yard binding 2 1/2 yard backing 48" x 56" Batting Olfa Circle Cutter (best/easiest) or bowl 6" wide 1 1/2 yards Lightweight fusible web Garnishes (optional): Open Toe foot for your sewing machine Applique Pressing Sheet

Instructions: Cutting the Fabric Cut all 40 of your 10" layer cakes into 8 1/2" x 4 1/2"

In my sample I made circle and background blocks the same to give me a yin and yang type

From inner border fabric cut five 2" strips WoF (width of fabric) and set aside From outer

1/4" seam allowance join the 4 1/2" x 8 1/2" strips on the 8 1/2" side.

2 Instructions: Cutting the Fabric Cut all 40 of your 10" layer cakes into 8 1/2" x 4 1/2" strips. Make two stacks one for the block and one for your circles. In my sample I made circle and background blocks the same to give me a yin and yang type look, but you could mix this up for a scrappier look. From inner border fabric cut five 2" strips WoF (width of fabric) and set aside From outer border fabric cut five 4 1/2" strips WoF and set aside Sew the Rectangles Using a scant 1/4" seam allowance join the 4 1/2" x 8 1/2" strips on the 8 1/2" side. Set seams and press to one side There will be 21 blocks and they should measure 8 1/2" x 8 1/2" square. You will have one extra. Applique the Circles Following the directions that came with you Olfa Circle Cutter cut (20) 6" circles from the fusible web. You may wish to cut center of the circle out to give you less stiffness. Just cut the center at 5 1/2"

Align traced center line with the center seam of the square and fuse circle to the wrong

Top and bottom of circle will be about 1 1/4" from the edge and the seams aligned

Fuse circle to background square according to manufacturer's directions.

3 Using the Olfa Circle cutter cut (20) 6" circles from the circle block stack. Trace center line to help with placement on the seam. Align traced center line with the center seam of the square and fuse circle to the wrong side of fabric circle according to manufacturer's directions. May wish to use your applique pressing sheet to keep webbing from getting on your ironing board. Center the circle (fusible side down) to the top of the background square. Top and bottom of circle will be about 1 1/4" from the edge and the seams aligned exactly on top of one another. Fuse circle to background square according to manufacturer's directions. Machine applique around the circle using a buttonhole, zigzag or stitch of your choice. Choose thread colors that coordinate with your fabrics. Might wish to use an open toe foot on your machine so you can see your stitch. Assemble the Quilt Top

4 Lay out the blocks in five rows of four each. Alternate your seams so they don't match. Using a scant 1/4" seam allowance sew the center of the quilt top row by row. Set your seams and press the seams to one direction. Using a scant 1/4" seam allowance sew your rows to complete the quilt top Set your seams and then press to one direction. Your quilt top at the is point should measure 32" x 40" Inner Border Cut two 2" x 40" strips or the length of your quilt top for the inner side borders. Using a scant 1/4" seam allowance, attach the side inner borders to the side of your quilt top. Set seams and press towards the inner border strip. Cut two 2" x 35" strips or the length of your quilt top for the inner top and bottom borders. Using a scant 1/4" seam allowance, attach the top/bottom inner borders to the top and bottom of your quilt top. Set seams and press towards the inner border strip. Outer Border Cut two 4 1/2" x 43" strips or the length of your quilt top for outer side borders. Piecing your strips as needed o Should you need to piece your strips...to join the strips for the outer border, use a diagonal seam rather than a straight seam. o Trim to a 1/4" o set seams and press open Using a scant 1/4" seam allowance, attach the side outer borders to the side of your quilt top. Set seams and press towards the outer border strip. Cut two 4 1/2" x 43" strips or the length of your quilt top for outer top/bottom borders. Piecing your strips as needed using above directions. Using a scant 1/4" seam allowance, attach the top/bottom outer borders to the top and bottom of your quilt top. Set seams and press towards the outer border strip. Quilt and bind your new quilt top. Yield: One super sized quickie 43" x 51"
