Club News July 2nd - General Meeting LEAH ZEIBER HISTORICAL QUILTS AND TEXTILES Leah A. Zieber is a quilt historian and quilt maker from Temecula, California specializing in Antique Reproduction Quilts from the nineteenth century. Her reproduction quilts have been exhibited across the country and most recently published in Stars: A Study of 19 th Century Star Quilts. Leah has worked closely with several Southern California collectors cataloging, managing and independently researching their textile collections. Her own collection of antique quilts and related textile items spans one hundred and thirty years and she shares her knowledge of American quilt history using her collection in lectures and workshops. Leah is currently writing book two in her series of historical fiction novels and companion quilt pattern books. She expects to release book one, Libby Morgan: Reunion in the fall of 2013.

A NOTE FROM SARA I had an invitation to an 85th birthday party. I ed my best friend to see if her mother would use a lap quilt. She said she would love it, but she has dementia. So I've been working on a sort of lap quilt using half square triangles, in lights and darks, starting with a light center and darks outlining, radiating out. The board has some good plans for our next meeting, so I hope all will be able to make it. It should be a lot of fun. I also believe we have a speaker. I haven't spoken with Janet or Donna about it, so read what programs has for us. Meanwhile try to keep cool and see you at the meeting. Something to keep her mind "busy". Her grand kids can play games with her using the quilt. I now have it on the long-arm machine. I have to have this ready by this Saturday. Sara Here it is, all that's left is to hand sew the binding to the back. I backed it with a sea foam green minkie. THANK YOU FROM EVELYN I want to thank everyone for their well wishes, cards, and prayers. After 4 days in ICU and 3 more in a room on the 2nd floor, I am home and believe it or not my cough and my wheezing are gone. As to what causes my problem, they can't tell me... Thank God for Steroids and antibiotics. Thanks again Ladies, you do good work. PRESIDENTS MESSAGE Sara Arnold arnold186@verizon.net MILITARY GIFT QUILTS Hi Everyone, It s time to wrap it up! All military and patriotic themed quilts need to be turned in at the August general meeting. I don't about you but the presentation and trunk show that Leah Zieber put on was fantastic and very informative. I believe that programs has booked her for January. Hopefully things work out and we can have another great meeting to start the year! If you have any guild military emblems floating around, they also need to be turned in. Seven months of stars and strips dancing on your design boards has come to a timely end. It's that time of the year; we need someone to chair the Christmas Party and someone to chair the Opportunity Quilt. Anyone being the chair can Page 2

Bring your own projects (Christmas time is coming) and/or we will help find you one if you're suffering "Quilter's Block" (trying to find a project). We have donated fabrics for charity which makes it a little less costly to do charity quilts. If you want to do strip quilts, half square triangles, different blocks, etc. your guild sisters are a world of knowledge. So join in the fun. HAPPY BIRTHDAY ALL! If we have missed anyone, let us know so our membership roster can be updated. CHARITY CHALLENGE It s count down time! The August challenge is due at the general meeting. Please bring it under wraps in a bag. Your quilt will be assigned a number and you will be given a matching numbered slip. The judging categories are: The month of August will start with our Guild meeting on the first Tuesday. Don't forget to finish and bring your Charity Panel Challenge. The second Tuesday is Sewation at Barbb's home. The third Tuesday will be "Sit n Sew". The fourth Tuesday, (27th) is Sewation at Barbb's. SEWATION NEWS Barb Baumgardner barbb0207@aol.com...just a note about our fun activity that I call SEWATION...what you say? There's no such word? You're right, but it's sort of an acronym for what we do. SEW plus ACTION which gives us the new word of SEWATION. All members are invited to join in the fun. You can't ask for much more than we had. That is good company, good food, and a good speaker. I hope that we have more meetings like that in the future. Leah Zieber and her daughters did a great job in telling about quilts from the past. It was very interesting to find out some of the ways that they date the quilts using the materials that are in them and when they were actually finished. Leah is giving a class on July 16th called Trip Back In Time. It should be a great class. In August, we will be having another potluck, challenge quilts are due, show & tell, and a game. Hope that all of you will be able to be there. It should be a great time also.

4 The Cool Breeze Issue #8 - August 2013 Sit & Sew in August will be a Half Yard Cruise Challenge. It should be a lot of fun and anyone can come and just sew on their own project also. Until then, take care of yourselves and enjoy the summer. Winter will be here all too soon. Janet Sackwar In September, we will have Lyn Mann's Happy Birthday Quilt class. I have the information for the class, and you will receive it when you sign up and pay for the class. I also have a quilt to show you that is one that she sent with the information. I will have it at the next meeting in August. Committee Reports SUNSHINE Be sure and check the Guild Calendar for other activities that may be added to Sit n Sew days. Jean Pederson mumoftheearth@charter.net Didn t have any reports of Sunshine Wishes at our July meeting. Hope it continues. I love not having to report bad news. We will be having a Half Yard Cruise Challenge on August 20th. If you choose not to participate in this activity, the usual Sit n Sew activities will also be going on. If you hear of anyone that needs any Sunshine Wishes, be sure and contact Jean. BLOCK OF THE MONTH SIT N SEW We had 12 blocks turned in at the July meeting. Two drawings were held and both were won by Carolyn Eberly. Congratulations! Hope to see some new charity quilts?????? The tables looked like a giant patchwork food quilt... Leah Zieber said she has never seen such a spread at ANY guild meeting, adding she would come any time for food like we had! I m wondering what level of sweetness is required to become a monthly regular on the Daily Press Community Event Page! A box of candy-level, a Freddie s sundae-level, or a line of sugar ants on a sugar trail to a specific office chair-level? Hmmmmm.... any ideas????? August will again be a potluck with the main courses being fruits and salads... a perfect combination for a hot August day... of course, no dessert will be turned away. BARGAIN TABLE Pat Cramer Cbillandpat@hotmail.com (No report for August) The thought of cuddling up in a quilt on a summer day makes the average hot flash seem like a breeze! However, I have it on good authority, that our High Desert Child Protective Services families think differently... a quilt, at any time of the year, brings comfort to the crushed in spirit. We also have a new member, Beverly Sauer, and returning member, Donna Hickish. Our guests were Helen Block and our presenter Leah Zieber and her two daughters, Becky and Katie. 6 HEARTS AND BEARS RAFFLE TABLE Carrie Morris Our YTD totals are 142 Hearts and 178 Bears that have been delivered to Victor Valley Hospital. I have on hand to be delivered another 56 Hearts and 53 Bears. Additionally, I collected 15 Bears and 5 Hearts at our meeting. Many thanks to everyone who continue to keep this worthwhile activity alive. Remember that patterns we used in the past are no longer used. The new patterns are available at the general meetings.
