2 SEARCH FUNCTIONS Start now, save time later With 305k + patterns available on Ravelry, from over 7.2 million accounts, It s a good idea to learn how to use the Ravelry search functions and features to their full advantage. Here, we ll cover: 1. How To Get Started 2. Advanced Search: Patterns, Designers, Sources, Yarns, People, Groups, Events

3 HOW TO GET STARTED Where do I begin? While some of these Ravelry lessons may seem overwhelming, you don t have to use all the options to their full potential! This lesson is an overview of the search features, with some tips that will help you to understand searching to your advantage. This lesson will outline some tips to help understand key Ravelry search functions - enjoy!

5 ADVANCED SEARCH: PATTERNS Extensive searches can be conducted to narrow down patterns by exact attributes. Try this search: Craft > Crochet Availability > Free Category > Home > Pillow Weight > Worsted Rating > 5 Stars Language > English You should have about 60 matches to consider! From there, you can sort based on a list of options.

6 ADVANCED SEARCH: PROJECTS Projects are a fun way to find inspiration within the community: Try this search: Pattern Category > Bag > Tote Status > Finished Craft > Crochet Weight > Light Fingering Has Photo > Yes Happiness with Project > very happy You should have about 28 matches to consider! From there, you can sort based on a list of options.

7 ADVANCED SEARCH: DESIGNERS Designers are those with published work in the yarn industry: crochet, knitting, loom knitting, machine knitting, weaving. It s harder to stumble on new designers to follow here because the only random search features are craft type. As you come across specific designers you d like to follow, this is one place you can search to find them. But, you have to know who you are looking for exactly; you will not get did you mean result options. Let s see an example

8 ADVANCED SEARCH: DESIGNERS Example: Searching The Velvet Acorn here will not find any result. But, searching Heidi May will lead you to The Velvet Acorn. However When you to to the People tab and search Heidi May or The Velvet Acorn you ll find a result for each. Tip: If you can t find a designer by their name in the designer tab, try searching for them in the people tab.

9 ADVANCED SEARCH: SOURCES Sources are any array of publication; book, magazine, pamphlet/booklet, website, webzine, ebook. Unlike the patterns section, this can help to find collections, or entities. Try this search: Pattern Source Type > Book Published > 2017 Sort by > Amazon Sales Rank The search results list Alterknit Stitch Dictionary first; a knitting book. If you manually type crochet into the search bar you will narrow from 124 results to just 15!

10 ADVANCED SEARCH: YARNS Yarns is a revolutionary search tool! Want an honest review of a yarn? Not sure what you can make with a yarn? Only have a certain amount of your yarn? Look here first! Try this search: Search bar > Cotton Cakes Cotton Cakes Click on Cotton Cakes and let s try this

11 ADVANCED SEARCH: YARNS Details: yarn label information Pattern Ideas: sourced via ravelry (search options) Projects: made with yarn (search options) Comments: Threads with live conversation About this yarn: Ratings, quick info Buy links (only list one source)

12 ADVANCED SEARCH: PEOPLE People helps you to connect with new people, or find friends! You can search through people who are already in your friends, or find new ones based on similarities or location! Try each of these searches: Distance from me > 10 miles My Notebook > In my friends Birthday (choose 1 of 3) You can connect with people locally, find a specific friend or track birthdays daily! These are great social functions and features.

13 ADVANCED SEARCH: GROUPS Groups on ravelry are similar to those on Facebook. You can search for groups based on Craft, Category, Type or distance! Try each of these searches: Category > Fiber Related > Festival, Fiber Fair Group Type > local stitch n bitch Distance from me > 20 miles Group creation date might be a factor to check before you dive into a group (or, just how active it is).

14 ADVANCED SEARCH: EVENTS Events are defined by a number of inperson experiences; from book signings to festivals and groups! Try each of these searches: Event type > Retreat, cruise, or tour More search options > Country > United States Distance from me > 20 miles You might want to begin with a simple distance from me range to see what events are in your area!

15 CHEAT SHEET RAVELRY SEARCH TIPS Save & share searches As we cover each Advanced Search category, it s important to note that you can save & share, too! To save: Click the blue floppy disc icon after you create a search you d like to save! You ll find them listed in the Search section. To share: Click the sharing hand icon after you create a search you d like to share! You ll get a link you can share with other Ravelry users!

16 CHEAT SHEET RAVELRY SEARCH TIPS Searching ravelry categories: The magnifying glass icon is your search hub for everything! Search categories are moveable; just drag and drop in order! Be sure to proof every search criteria, and clear old searches! Type key terms in the search box when categories aren t enough! The floppy disc icon will save a search you want to keep!
