1 2018 Open class exhibit Chairperson Bonnie Krenz Flower Show Chairperson Nikki Rahlf Registration of Exhibits Thursday, July 12, :00-9:00 PM OR Friday, July 13, :00-10:00 AM All Exhibits Entered & Displayed in Commercial Building The Griggs County Fair Board expresses their sincere appreciation to all who exhibit in the open class show. It is made a quality show by your participation and support.

2 Time Schedule & General Rules For Open Class Exhibitors: Exhibits will be received on Thursday, July 12 from 7:00-9:00 p.m. or on Friday, July 13 from 8:00-10:00 a.m. in the Commercial Building on the Griggs County Fair Grounds. Everyone is welcome to participate in this open class show. Exhibitors may show twice in each lot, unless otherwise noted. If exhibiting twice in one lot they must be of different content such as sweet pickles and dill pickles not two jars of one type of pickles in lot 105, banana bread and pumpkin bread not two loaves of same type of quick bread in lot 207. Professional exhibits will be for display only and will be limited to two exhibits per class. Business cards are encouraged along with display. Exhibits must remain in the commercial building until payout or premiums are forfeited. Open class premiums are paid from 4:00-5:00 p.m., Sunday, July 15 in the commercial building. All items left after release will be at the exhibitors risk. The Griggs County Fair Board will not be responsible for the loss or damage of any exhibit. Premiums will not be mailed out to exhibitors. Exhibits will be divided and judged by three age groups. Adult (Ages 18 & Older), Junior (Ages 11-17), and Beginner (Ages 10 & Under). A blue ($3.00), red ($2.00) and white ($1.00) sticker can be given in each lot and a grand ($6.00), and reserve ($4.00) in each class which merits such an award. School projects will be for display only. All premiums will be paid in Cooper Bucks. One over-all award will be given in each age category. The over-all award can only be won every 3 rd year. Exhibits will be judged on Friday, July 7 beginning at 10:30 a.m. The judging areas of the commercial building will be closed to all spectators at this time. Clear plastic bags are highly encouraged for clothing, baking items, etc. to protect your exhibit. CLASS 1 FOOD PRESERVATION Canning class requires one standard canning jar, with a standard lid or covers. Jellies may be sealed with paraffin and a lid. Other methods of preservation should be display in an appropriate container. Over grown specimens are seldom typical and are frequently coarse and lack flavor. Select a few extra specimens above the requirements of the premium list for last minute replacements. All items in each entry should be uniform in size, shape, color and degree of maturity. Avoid blemishes caused by decay, dirt, disease, insects or mechanical injury. If blemishes of any kind are severe enough, the exhibit may be disqualified. Vegetables should be washed only as a last resort. Clean vegetables with a soft brush or facial tissue to remove loose soil. The tops of all root crops like carrots and beets should be one inch long. Keep the vegetables as fresh as possible before exhibiting. Garden Produce Standards: Specimen Uniform and whole Preparation Correct number, manner of preparation, cleanliness, and neatness Merits Uniformity of size, shape, color, maturity, firm specimen, fresh, free of insect/disease damage, free of mechanical damage. Faults Wilted, immature or over mature blemishes, misshapen, poor color, insect disease or mechanical damage. VEGETABLE PREPARATION: Beans harvest fresh or place in plastic bag and store in refrigerator until ready for exhibit. Leave calyx attached. Beets tops one inch long, leaves cause wilting of roots. Do not remove tap root, but roots may be washed. Carrots cut top one inch long. Roots may be washed.

7 Cucumbers leave stems ½ inch long on pickling cucumbers only, wipe clean. Size: Pickling slicing 6-8 Dill cut seed heads with inch stems. Tie near lower end of stems and again just below the seed heads. Lettuce, kale, Swiss chard harvest fresh or place in plastic bag and store in refrigerator until ready to exhibit. Onions (dry) remove no more than one layer of skin to clean. Best if no skin is removed. Do not cut tops so low that bulb is injured. Leave one inch long. Do not wash. Trim roots ¾. Do not trim roots closely or bulb may be damaged. Onions (green) trim tops to an even length, trim roots 3/4 overall length of onions exhibited 6-8 inches. No bulb. Peas leave calyx on. Peppers size is of considerable importance. Leave stem ½ inch long. Potatoes brush or wipe off with a soft cloth. Can be washed but do not damage skin. Radishes leave one inch top. Wash and tie six roots per bunch. Harvest fresh/refrigerate until show Rhubarb pull, do not cut stalks. Trim leaves so only 2 of leaf blade remain attached to stalk. Tie stalks at both ends. Tomatoes harvest fresh or refrigerate before displaying. Remove stems to prevent stem punctures.
