1 Miami County Quilter s Guild Newsletter Volume 38, Edition 5 May 2018 April Minutes OPENING: President Nancy Hart-Kline called the meetings to order at 10:00 am and 6:30 pm. She opened the meeting with a joke. There were 65 members in the morning and 28 members and 1 guest in the evening. The minutes were approved with a motion by Barb Brown and a second by Virginia Adams in the morning and by acclimation in the evening. MEMBER UPDATE: Current Member Pat Hampson, Tricia Culbertson s mother, has passed away. Pam Pearson broke her arm and is waiting for her cast to be put on. Verna and Mary were back to the meeting this morning. Karin McCracken is walking without her boot. OFFICER REPORTS: 1 st VP/Membership: Connie Epp reported that the new directories are here for you to pick up. 2 nd VP/ Programs: Diana Cook announced that she and Nancy Hart- Kline are presenting the May program. They will be teaching different methods of making string or strip quilts. If you have any strip quilts to share with us please bring them to the meeting. There will be a workshop by Marj Banks on Seminole patchwork on June 1 and June 2. We need to know which day you can attend so please know by the May meeting. Each class can only have 20 students. The July 7 workshop will be given by Laura Davids. She is teaching a class on hand embroidery and using crayons on our fabrics. No sewing machine is required for this class. The July meeting is our potluck dinner and our challenge. The challenge this year is to repurpose something for your project. Angela Walters is our August speaker and there will be a Bargello workshop on August 4th. TREASURER: Kathy Havelka reported that we have $25, in the treasury. CORRESPONDENCE: Regina York read a thank you note from one of our Beginning Quilters, Janet Gabbert thanking us for renewing her love of sewing. We also received a note about the quilt show in Tulsa. For info go to We also received a notice from a lady in Michigan who is raffling a patriotic quilt for charity. For info on this visit COMMUNITY SERVICE: We will be working on fidget quilts for the county nursing homes on May 12. Bring your sewing machines, supplies and thread. We have also given out a couple disaster quilts in the past month due to house fires. HISTORIAN: Lonnie Vopat asks that if anyone has any pictures or articles to please see that she receives them. 2 Announcements PBS is airing shows about quilts and quilters on Monday and Thursday evenings at 7:30. They also have shows on Saturday morning at 6:00 and 8:00 Barb Brown is doing long-arm quilting for others. Phil Eastman has a wooden quilting frame. If you are interested call or Laura Davids is making the ribbons for our quilt show in Sept. She needs some inspiration from the previous years ribbons. If you have won a homemade ribbon from years past, please bring it to the May evening meeting or send a picture to Laura via text or at turfmistress@gmail.com April Minutes Continued OLD BUSINESS: 2017 Spring Retreat: There are 39 people signed up to go. Please wait until after noon to arrive on Thursday and after 1 PM on Friday. There will not be bottled water provided but a cup with a lid will be. BUS TRIP: The trip to Lincoln to visit the International Quilt Studies Museum is April 14. Please be at the Paola Walmart parking lot so you can be on the bus promptly at 6:30 am. We will also have a bus go to the Price Chopper parking lot in Spring Hill for loading at 6:30 am. Park in front of the Crown Realty side of the parking lot. We plan to be home by 6:30 pm. Bring money for snacks at our stops and for the gift shop at the museum. JULY CHALLENGE: The theme for the challenge this year is recycled, repurposed or reclaimed. Your challenge project doesn t have to be fabric. KCRQF: Our Guild responsibility will be to hang and take down the quilts again. All guilds will be responsible to help with white gloving. The entire building has been rented this year. BLOCK OF THE MONTH: Next months block should be done in spring colors. NEW BUSINESS SCHOLARSHIP WINNER: Our scholarship winner is Emily Wright from the Spring Hill area. She plans to go to K-State and wants to be a county extension agent. She will be at the May meeting for the scholarship presentation. MEMBERSHIP: Nancy presented an idea from the board for member discussion. Catherine Kane moved that we amend our policies and procedures to give free membership to members when they reach their 80th birthday. Marilyn Chandler seconded the motion and it passed unanimously. MEMORIAL CONTRIBUTIONS: We also had discussion about memorial contributions for current members. Virginia Adams moved that when a current guild member dies that we will donate $100 to their designated charity. If no charity is designated then the board will choose a charity to give to or give the memorial to the funeral home to help pay expenses. Connie Epp seconded the motion. The motion passed. GARAGE SALE: Ruthe Goff volunteered to organize the annual garage sale. Details will follow. KID S CAMP: Cee Kueser and Laurie Jacklovich will be organizing again. The kid s will be making a patriotic backpack. Kits will be provided but the kids need to bring a machine, scissors, thread, pins, etc., and a COACH! Registration will be available until June 1st. We are also collecting items for My Father s House and The Safe Home Residents. The items really needed are: cold weather gear: hats, gloves, boots, linens, toddler diapers, and personal hygiene items. Please see for complete list of supplies needed and information on their services Opportunity Quilt Bellingham is the size of a Full Size quilt and is a wool applique design. Tickets are now on sale. Tickets are 1 for $1.00 or 6 for $5.00. The quilt drawing will be held Sunday September 30th at the Drag N Brag Quilt Show. 4 Block of the Month Cindy Toburen and Linda Rogers Cindy and Linda are continuing with the scrappy theme. Please make scrappy blocks for our Fire/Disaster Quilts. Don t forget, you get to enter your name in the drawing for every block you make, so if you make 4 blocks your name goes in 4 times! If you are arriving on Friday, do not arrive before 1 PM.
