The BIGGEST cost of implementing an entire GIS program is acquiring and updating field data. The cliché Garbage In, Garbage Out couldn t be any closer to the truth when dealing with right tools and methods for measuring and mapping. Field data collection is big business right now. Keeping up with the economic times means less people are now expected to do more than ever and without the proper tools, it can cost time, money and risk of lives. There s new technology found in Tru3D mapping lasers has changed the game. There is a growing trend towards the use of laser based mapping tools because the old tape wheel and clipboard and conventional surveying tools and methods are no longer meeting today s demands. 37
38
39
Distance Method 1: You can simply stand there and guess or pace it out. This method is not recommended for any professional measurement or mapping activities. Distance Method 2: When using a tape or wheel, be sure to keep it as tight and straight as possible. This typically requires a 2 nd person holding the other end and can be difficult to use in certain terrain. 40
Measuring: Slope Distance (SD) Needing: Horizontal Distance (HD) Distance Method 3: When using a recreational rangefinder, you may be able to acquire a rough distance measurement without occupying its location. These rangefinders are designed for golfing or hunting and do not produce professional results, especially if you target to anything above or below the horizontal plane. 41
Reflectorless range at 400 ft 42
Measuring: Slope Distance (SD) Degree of Inclination (INC) On Board Solution: Vertical Distance (VD) Horizontal Distance (HD) 43
44
45
Slope Method 1: When using a clino, align yourself at the base and aim to the opposite end of the slope to a 2 nd person holding a prism at the same height as your instrument from the ground. 46
Slope Method 2: When using a TruPulse 360 laser, aim and shoot both ends of the slope from any vantage point and instantly get a slope value in the scope. 47
Height Method 1: When using a height stick, be sure you are holding it perfectly straight up and down and directly under the point you need to measure. Height Method 2: When using mechanical hand tools, such as a clino or chain, be sure to write down everything so you can manually calculate the results. Chains typically will require a 2 nd person holding the other end. When in rough terrain, this process may be difficult. Be sure to be current on your safety training and always wear protective clothing when dealing with power lines. You ll also need to keep up on your regular maintenance and certification. Be especially careful when holding near a power line or when forced to stand in rough terrain. 48
Height Method 3: When using a TruPulse laser, take your 1 st shot anywhere you have a clear line of sight and your next two shots to the top and base. The height value of your target will display in the scope. You can use the same sensor to collect elevation data when needed. 49
50
Azimuth Method 1: When using a hand compass, be sure to keep it as level as possible for best results. This will give you and azimuth value in relation to North. Be sure you consider the declination value of where you are taking your measurement. Also, you will have to manually enter your azimuth bearing into your GIS software. 51
You can shoot at any target, from any angle and still get reliable azimuth data Mention how nobody else to date is able to accomplish this. 52
53
When using GPS alone, it may be difficult to capture features within some these areas and completely impossible in others. 54
Position Method 2: When integrating GPS with a TruPulse 360 compass laser, simply occupy any safe or convenient location, record the GPS coordinate and shoot in any feature within your sight. Azimuth (AZ) + Slope Distance (SD) + Inclination (INC) Horizontal Plane The GIS software will then take the raw laser measurement values and populate a remote GPS coordinate of the targeted feature. You can also collect elevation data. 55
Position Method 3: You don t even need GPS. When using a TruPulse 360 compass laser stand alone, simply occupy a known landmark/coordinate and shoot in any feature within your sight. 56
