4 The Sensational Submarine Experiments Question: Why does an eyedropper rise and fall in a bottle of water? Materials eyedropper empty 2-liter plastic soda bottle drinking glass water data-capture sheet (page 108) Procedure (You may wish to demonstrate this activity first. Then allow students to try the experiment and complete the data-capture sheet at a center.) 1. Fill the soda bottle with water almost to the top. Fill the drinking glass with water. 2. Remove the rubber bulb from the eyedropper and place the dropper into the drinking glass of water. When the eyedropper (submarine) becomes full of water, place the rubber bulb back on but do not remove the eyedropper from the glass during this process. Remove the eyedropper from the glass and gently squeeze out enough water so that the dropper is two-thirds full. 3. Place the eyedropper in the bottle and screw on the cap tightly. (If the eyedropper goes to the bottom of the bottle but does not come back, there is too much water in the eyedropper. Conversely, if the eyedropper remains on the surface, there is not enough water in it.) 4. Observe the setup and ask students to make suggestions about how to get the submarine to move up and down inside the bottle. 5. Upon completion of the brainstorming, place both hands on either side of the soda bottle and squeeze. The eyedropper should fall to the bottom of the jug.
