1 THE ROCKHOUND NEWS OF THE ARLINGTON GEM AND MINERAL CLUB 1408 GIBBINS ROAD, ARLINGTON, TEXAS VOL.60, ISSUE 9, SEPTEMBER 2010 ARLINGTON GEM AND MINERAL CLUB MEMBER OF SOUTH CENTRAL FEDERATION OF MINERAL SOCIETIES AMERICAN FEDERATION OF MINERALOGICAL SOCIETIES CLUB PURPOSE: To encourage the study of earth sciences, lapidary arts and other related fields, and to enjoy good fellowship with those who share like interests CONTACTS World Wide Web Home Page Business meeting and program 1 st Tuesday 7:30PM AGMC Board Meeting Last Tuesday 7:00PM PRESIDENT S ADDRESS Elaine O Donley We came back from Franklin, N.C. with various faceting materials. While there, we met MARSH HOWARD, INVENTOR OF THE LIGHTNING LAP. Of course, we just had to purchase that lap from Marsh. Another highlight was seeing the beautiful work of the great, Dalan Hargrave. Did you know he has what appear to be tiny, faceted sapphires imbedded in the index wheel on his Ultra Tec Machine, and larger 12 mm gems wherever he could find a place to put them What a sight!!!!!!!!!! Dalan s works are legend! He is in a class by himself and will be coming out with a book on how to concave facet, very soon. We met another gentleman, who will do a program for us in the spring of 2011 and bring some of his beautiful rough along. We had a comfortable stay at a Bed & Breakfast where we met another couple also attending the FRANKLIN FROLIC 3. Needless to say, our conversations went late into the night. We must have done a good job talking about all that AGMC has to offer, because this Atlanta couple has decided to come here and visit AGMC in the fall. THE AKS SHOW was a smashing success! Our VOLUNTEERS did a superb job, showcasing AGMC; so much so, we have been invited back to DEMONSTRATE AND TO DO SEVERAL LITTLE CLASSES again in February. MANY THANKS TO BETH SPINKS, COORDINATOR FOR THE AKS SHOW, AND ALL THOSE WHO PARTICIPATED. OUR AGMC TEXAS TREASURES SHOW IS SEPTEMBER 4 and 5. We anticipate many new faces coming to see more of what AGMC has to offer, as a result of attending the AKS Show. So, with this in mind, we would once again ask that plenty of members man the DEMONSTRATION TABLES and other areas, where they are needed. Sign-up Deadline is fast approaching. CONTACT FRANK O DONLEY TO SIGN UP FOR THE DEMONSTRATION TABLE. CONTACT KAREN CESSNA TO SIGN UP FOR ANYTHING ELSE. We would like to see more people sign up for various competitions. 6 FIELD TRIPS Sue Poarch The September field trip will be to visit the Vetro glass blowing in Grapevine. I've had many requests for a return visit, so this is a return visit. Especially of interest was to make Christmas ornaments. I stopped at Vetro and talked to Shannon - she remembered our earlier visit. After talking with the person, we have set up the return visit on much the same basis as before. Since there are only two glass blowing stations, the time frame is from 10 AM to 2 PM. Just come during that time, identify yourself to who ever is working in the gift shop. That person will put you on the list to assist with your project. We will be able to make either Christmas ornaments or glass flowers. Making an ornament or a flower costs $25 plus tax. You're also invited to come just to watch - that doesn't cost anything and is fun. So, for all of you who wanted a return visit and those of you who didn't get to attend the January visit, please join us. Please sign up at the September meeting or send an to sue.poarch1@tx.rr.com. I need to provide Vetro with a count of attendees that week so they can be prepared. Plus they would like a list on visit day. When: September 25 from 10 AM to 2 PM. Where - Vetro Glass, Grapevine, TX (directions to be sent later, but it's right across the parking lot from the train depot) Make: Christmas ornament or a flower - you get to assist Cost: $25 plus tax if you make a glass object.
