2 Assembly instructions rev DISCLAIMER 1 Safety warnings These instructions are made for board version rev , check this on your board before continuing. Follow the assembly instructions very carefully, soldering the wrong components can cause malfunction and dangerous operation. Operate the kit from a battery powered device without connecting it to the mains electricity. Wear goggles when soldering. Do not touch the high voltage components when operating the circuit. Do not use the kit without the GM tubes connected. Disconnect the micro USB connector when switching off the circuit. The circuit is safe to touch after one minute after switch off. Do not use the kit in a humid or wet environment. Make sure the kit is kept dust free. The high voltage capacitors have have a 4.7M Ω resistor in series to limit the current of the discharge. Not using the correct value of for these resistors will make the kit dangerous to use. 3 Assembly instructions rev SMD HAND SOLDERING SUMMARY 3 SMD components Why SMD? The main reason is that there is a better selection of parts available at similar or lower price than in through hole version. The finished kit is more compact. The kit can have a higher specification with more reliable operation and more protection circuitry at a given price point when compared to a through hole kit. SMD soldering is actually easier than most people think. To make this even easier for you the board was designed to have pad sizes made especially for hand soldering. There are plenty of videos on how to learn hand soldering. If you are new to the topic, check out the EEVBlog s video on this 1. I also provided a text summary to complement the video for you in section 5 so you can follow this when you are actually soldering. 4 Individually labelled parts Since the SMD parts are usually not marked in a very clear or standard way as opposed to the through hole components, this job was done for you. All parts that come with the Muon Hunter kit have a clear label on them so you can identify it clearly. 5 SMD hand soldering summary Here is a summary of the most typical method for soldering SMD components. As with soldering in general, work in a well ventilated area wearing eye protection. Be careful with your soldering iron and with your components, because they might stay hot even after you soldered them, so take your time, don t rush it. After all, you want to have a reliable, well working kit, the key to achieve this lies in the quality of the soldering. Remember it is better to do the soldering slower, but correctly, rather than rushing it and troubleshoot the assembled board later. Take a break if you need to. 1. Work with one type of component at a time to avoid confusion. SMD parts are usually not marked in a very clear way, so make sure you don t mix them up. 2. Heat up one pad with your soldering iron and add a very small amount of solder to it. 3. Pick the component with a pair of tweezers. 4. Heat up the solder on the pad and put the component on the board with the tweezers so that the metallic terminal of the component touches the tip of your soldering iron. Be careful not to burn yourself. The goal here is to heat up the solder, the pad and the terminal of the component at the same time. This is usually a very quick step, typically takes no more than 1-2s. 5. Now your component is in place, you only have to solder the rest of the terminals or the other terminal in case of a 2 terminal component. Heat up the terminal of the component and the pad at the same time with your soldering iron and then apply the solder where the terminal of the component touches the board. Do not touch your soldering iron with the solder, this is to ensure that the pad on the board and the terminal of the component are both heated up
