I ve have attended some 30+ AJA events as the wife of an associate member, and I am more pleased to say that I now attend representing my own company, Startto-Finish. My reputation has been built in just over six years by being involved. I am proud to serve on the AJA board, and to offer support through yearbooks, newsletters, by serving on committees, and pitching-in whenever I m needed. The reality is that anyone traveling with jewelry is in peril simply because they are doing so. Staying at a hotel? It is the next most common crime location, comprising 25% of the total.

It happens in parking lots more frequently than any other place. In fact, 43% of all crimes against individuals carrying jewelry outside of the store happen in parking lots. The reality is that anyone traveling with jewelry is in peril simply because they are doing so. Staying at a hotel? It is the next most common crime location, comprising 25% of the total. Crimes against those traveling with jewelry can and do happen anywhere at residences, on the road, at gas stations, restaurants, airports, or other means of public travel. Essentially, traveling with jewelry makes you an instant target. As the largest insurer of jewelry in the nation, Jewelers Mutual Insurance Company has plenty of experience analyzing jewelry crimes. We use our insight to educate our policyholders about safety measures. So how can you minimize risk of loss? In general, Never leave jewelry unattended. Unattended losses account for 23% of total off-premises losses. Be aware. Watch for people casing your store or following you. Keep the amount of jewelry you re carrying manageable. Stay alert and pay strict attention to every detail along your route. Avoid being predictable. Vary your schedule. Vary your path. Don t stop along the way. Avoid isolated areas. Establish a realistic plan for each day so you re not rushed or harried. Don t fall for distractions. Disguise jewelry size, bulk, and weight for transport and shipping. Carry a fully charged cell phone at all times, loaded with emergency phone numbers. Don t chat on your cell phone while driving. Pay atten tion and watch for people following your car. Travel in a personal auto Keep your car in excellent repair and with a full gas tank. Avoid personalized license plates, parking permits, or other markers. For rental cars, record the car s color, make, model, license number, and rental agent phone number on a card that you carry with you. Also, record this information on a piece of paper and attach it to your windshield visor for quick reference if you must call the police while you are driving. Look around your car before approaching it. If anything looks unusual, immediately get to a public area and call police. Look inside the vehicle including the floor of the back seat before entering. Public transportation / air Board only after most other passengers have boarded first. Hand carry your valuables and keep them in your possession at all times this includes taxis. Arrive early for security checks and arrange for a private security screening. If you encounter problems with security, discreetly request to speak with a checkpoint supervisor or ground security coordinator. Do not draw attention to yourself. Hotels / motels Do not stay in hotels where you must enter your room from the outside of the building. Park in a well lit highly traveled area and enter through a main lobby. Always have your valuables physically in your personal possession. Ask for a room between the 2nd and 6th floor, never on the ground floor. Thoroughly check your room upon entering. Don t trust room safes or front desk safety deposit boxes. The safest place is with you. Try to enter elevators alone. Avoid long hallways, nooks, crannies, isolated, and dark areas.
