5 Fall Activities Junior Fall Recruiting Only two years ago, many of the primary firms that recruit at Notre Dame hosted oncampus interviews mid-december. This year, many firms completed the main body of recruiting as soon as students stepped on campus in August and finished interviews by the end of September. Our goal was to ensure that Notre Dame students did not fall behind those at other schools due to this accelerated timeline and were able to represent Notre Dame with adeptness and professionalism. Although we are still gathering the final results on placements for the semester, we have been very successful in helping the juniors secure internships at many of the top financial services and investment firms. NDIGI Partnership NDIGI was established in 2015 by Jim Parsons ( 96) and Dr. Carrie Quinn ( 96) in order to formalize a program targeted towards investment management at Notre Dame through experiential learning opportunities, faculty research, and leveraging key partnerships of the University. With the help of NDIGI Managing Director, Kevin Burke, the Wall Street Club has embarked on a new partnership with NDIGI to combine efforts on several initiatives. We have leveraged NDIGI to help promote our sophomore externship program, which places sophomores into externships at various firms ranging from three days to three weeks long. Additionally, NDIGI s professional network and connections have been instrumental to providing a diverse set of speakers to the club that offer increased visibility into recruiting processes, different careers, and more. A few of the speakers that have already visited are detailed below. As we move forward, we believe this partnership with NDIGI will continue to greatly benefit the Wall Street Club in a sustainable way for many semesters to come. Diversity Initiatives The Wall Street Club has dedicated itself to improving diversity amongst its members and the students it places on Wall Street. On October 5 th, four senior members of the club s board, including Jaclyn Daily, Colleen Coen, Sarah Graney and Alarisse Lam, hosted the first Women s Breakout Session as part of its plan to build out a sustainable platform to attract female members, increase dialogue amongst women in the club, and help connect women with diversity initiatives at firms. Furthermore, the club has announced a new partnership with Girls Who Invest, a nationwide organization dedicated to getting more women into the field of investment management. We have recently worked with Girls Who Invest to promote some of their programs, including a four-week summer residential program at Notre Dame or the University of 5
6 Pennsylvania, where students learn from industry professionals and conclude their residency with six-week paid internships. Wall Street Club, under the leadership of senior Kyle Dedrick, has also spent time this semester working with NDIGI and Athletic SAC to develop a platform dedicated to athletes. This platform is aimed at attracting athlete members and creating Wall Street Club workshops and sessions that are suited towards athlete schedules and workloads. Alternative Careers Speaker Series Kent Weldon On November 3 rd, students were able to partake in a discussion with Kent Weldon regarding alternative careers in the private equity space. Kent is a managing director at Thomas H. Lee Partners and a Notre Dame alumnus. Kent s discussion was especially helpful for students as he was able to touch upon relevant points for both upperclassmen, related to private equity recruiting, and underclassmen, regarding various potential career paths. Alternative Buyside Panel The Wall Street Club hosted a panel of young alumni on October 20 th to discuss the buyside recruiting process, timeline, preparation, and what buyside roles entail. The firms represented included: Golden Gate Capital, Blackstone, Genstar Capital, Burford Capital, GSO Capital Partners and BDT and Company LLC, and the alumni came from various regions. Senior Private Equity Recruiting Panel Seniors were invited to a panel on November 17 th focused on shedding light on the buyside recruiting process. The panel was hosted by Colin McCort, a recruiter from CPI, and Troy Phillips, Managing Director at Beecken and Petty O Keefe & Company Healthcare Private Equity. The seniors were treated to a rich discussion on the recruiting timeline, interview preparation and more. 6
7 Chicago Networking Trip On August 15 th, a group of 18 Notre Dame juniors visited Chicago on an intensive threeday networking trip led by a group of seniors including Nick Rice, Danny Willett, Tyler Christian and Jake Hohlweg. The trip was geared towards undergraduates interested in a career in investment banking in Chicago, and was especially helpful for the juniors considering the accelerated timeline of investment banking recruiting this year. The students visited 11 firms in addition to a special visit to Chicago venture capital firm, Sandbox Industries, hosted by its CFO and Notre Dame graduate, Vanessa Rollings. The investment banks ranged between major bulge bracket, boutique, and middle market banks in order to give the students exposure to the wide breadth of opportunities available to them in Chicago and allow them to learn the differences between an analyst s role at each specific firm. John Mullen, one of the juniors attending the trip who has since secured an internship in investment banking at Credit Suisse in Chicago, commented on the trip: The Chicago Networking Trip was a fantastic opportunity to explore a career in the financial services industry and connect with young Notre Dame professionals. Participating investment banks include: Lincoln International, Citi, William Blair, Greenhill, BMO, Credit Suisse, JP Morgan, Deutsche Bank, Lazard, Goldman Sachs and Baird. Winter Underclassmen Trips The Wall Street Club has organized several trips to various cities as opportunities for underclassmen to meet and network with firms. These trips have historically been particularly helpful for students to learn about the various careers on Wall Street, and give them a great opportunity to make a positive impression on these firms that could potentially be their future employer. While individual firms are yet to be finalized, we are excited to announce the following trips and dates: San Francisco Bay Area Dates: January 11 & 12 Careers: Investment Banking, Venture Capital, Growth Equity and Private Equity Chicago Dates: January 11 & 12 Careers: Investment Banking, Wealth Management and Private Equity Sophomore New York City Trip Dates: January 11 & 12 Careers: Investment Banking, Private Equity, Investment Management Kevin Burke s Freshmen New York City Networking Trip Dates: January 11 Careers: Investment Banking, Corporate Banking, Asset Management, Private Equity 7
