2 annual general meeting minutes 7pm, Monday, June 9 th, 2014 Great Hall, La Cité Francophone 8627 rue Marie-Anne-Gaboury (91 Street) Edmonton, AB Attendance: Quorum was met with attendance and proxies. The list for attendance is available upon request. 1. Call to Order: Christine Frederick called the meeting to order at 7:08 pm. Christine Frederick gave welcome and introductions of staff and board members. 2. Approval of Agenda: Motion to approve agenda as distributed. Moved by Kevin Mott, seconded by Candas Jane Dorsey. Carried. 3. Approval of Minutes: Motion to approve minutes for Edmonton Arts Council 2013 Annual General Meeting as distributed. Moved by Wayne Authurson, seconded by Gerry Morita. Carried. 4. Message from Chair: Christine Frederick presented the Chair s report. Christine acknowledged the City of Edmonton s proclamation of the year of reconciliation. She updated members with the results of the 2013 Cultural Diversity Audit including creation of a Community Liaison staff position and Equity Committee. Christine informed the members of an Aboriginal Arts audit underway to develop better the EAC s dialogue and relationships with the community. 5. Executive Director Report: Paul Moulton spoke on the year of transition for the EAC. He recognized John Mahon's long tenure as the Executive Director and the new initiatives that the EAC is undertaking to serve the community: working with consultants on an analysis of current EAC practices and procedures and how they impact our relationship with urban Aboriginal artists, ongoing work on addressing the need for space in partnership with Arts Habitat, and the inaugural Edmonton Music Prize set forth a new path with exciting projects to come in Financial Report: Mary Phillips-Rickey presented the financial report. Motion to accept the Financial report as distributed. Moved by Mary Phillips-Rickey, seconded by Candas Jane Dorsey. Carried. Mary encouraged members to visit the TIX on the Square, noting that it is a service to the Edmonton arts community. She also encouraged members to volunteer at the next casino, which will be in December It was noted, the total Community Investment Program Grant funds reflect the one time allocation to the Art Gallery of Alberta, as directed by Edmonton City Council. annual general meeting agenda & minutes 2
3 7. Appointment of Auditors: Motion to approve Neil Ramsay Professional Corporation as the auditor for Moved by Mary Phillips-Rickey, seconded by Kevin Mott. Carried Board Slate: As no further nominations were received from the members of Edmonton Arts Council by the nomination deadline, the following candidates are elected by acclamation as the new members: Ahmed Ali and Naz Sohni Uppal. Moved by Nicole Reeves, seconded by Shelley Switzer. Carried. As no objections were received from the members of Edmonton Arts Council, the following directors are approved for a second term on the Edmonton Arts Council Society Board of Directors: Anne Ferguson-Switzer and Mary Phillips Rickey. Moved by Nicole Reeves, seconded by Kevin Mott. Carried. Christine Fredrick thanked the outgoing board members, Nicole Reeves and Wayne Authurson, for their years of hard work and support for the EAC. Gifts presented to the outgoing board members. 9. 4 NOMINATION SLATE AGM 2015 Michael Ford Michael Ford is a proud member of the Theatre and Festival community. Fringe Theatre Adventures was home for16 years, where he worked in various capacities throughout the years, overseeing the day-to-day operations of the ATB Financial Arts Barns and the Fringe Festival. He worked with a strong support system consisting of 150 staff members and 1200 volunteers to build the Festival infrastructure and manage teams supporting artist and patron services. Mike finished his long tenure as the Operations Director in January 2015 to become a proud Folkie and Production Manager for the Edmonton Folk Music Festival. Mike enjoys being part of a team, beers at the end of a hard workday, and he can run really, really fast. Heather Inglis Heather Inglis is an Edmonton based theatre director, producer, dramaturg and educator whose career has taken her across the country. Heather has been honored to work at The Shaw Festival, The Citadel Theatre, Workshop West, Northern Light Theatre, Azimuth Theatre, Theatre Junction, Alberta Playwrights Network, Saskatchewan Playwrights Centre, Playwrights Atlantic Resource Centre as well as Universities in Edmonton, Calgary and Saskatoon. She has directed and assistant directed over 40 productions, many of which have been new Canadian works. Heather has received Edmonton Artists Trust Fund, Celebration of Women in Arts Awards in 2001 and 2010 as well as the Telus Courage to Innovate Award at the Mayor s Evening of the Arts (Edmonton) in A graduate of the National Theatre School of Canada, six of Heather s Edmonton productions have been nominated for a total of 12 Elizabeth Sterling Haynes Awards. Heather is a the founder and artistic director of Theatre Yes in Edmonton a small scale independent theatre company which is committed to producing intelligent theatre for adventurous audiences. Heather leads the Citadel Theatre Playwrights Young Company. She is a member of Canadian Actors Equity and The Literary Managers and Dramaturgs of the Americas.
5 NOMINATION SLATE AGM 2015 Mary-Ellen Perley Mary-Ellen is active in the theatre community in Edmonton as an administrator, actor, director, playwright, stage manager and tireless volunteer. She has represented pan provincial organizations such as Theatre Alberta as a board member and president, the Alberta Drama Festival Association as a board member and vice president and in addition, has also served on EAC juries; bringing with her an understanding of the inner workings of the organization regarding grants. Mary-Ellen retired from a long and accomplished career as an educator. In 2006, she was honored with the Prime Minister s Award for Teaching Excellence. Mary-Ellen takes on retirement with a passion and to challenge herself in so many ways in the theatre community. Theresa Reichert Theresa Reichert is a partner with Deloitte LLP and has been providing services to her clients for more than two decades. Her dedication to her work and clients is coupled with her talents as an expert witness, as recognized by The Court of Queen Bench of Alberta. She earned a Masters of Business Administration at the University of Alberta and is a Chartered Accountant, Chartered Business Valuator and Certified Fraud Examiner. She describes herself as a dilettante musician, venturing into numerous musical adventures including several seasons as a chorister with Ariose Women s choir. Her most recent venture has been in the eponymous Tess and d Linquint, playing stand-up bass, backing vocals and co-writing with Bryan Reichert. Her volunteer endeavors include Kids Kottage, the Alberta Diabetes Foundation and Women s Legal Forum (ACTLA) Committee. She is passionate about Edmonton and hopes to inspire others to find ways to support and give back to our local community and vibrant city. Murray Utas Murray is a director, performer and playwright. He has been involved in professional theatre and film since In 2004, Murray and Amber Borotsik created a 4-day event, The Expanse Movement Arts Festival. Since then, Murray has secured a larger venue, festival operating funding, title sponsorship and put in place an incredible festival staff to
6 NOMINATION SLATE AGM 2015 ensure longevity for years to come, so that Expanse can take it s place beside the flagship festivals that make up Edmonton s Festival City. Currently he is the Artistic Director at the Fringe Theatre Adventures. Christopher White Christopher White is a Rosie Award nominated filmmaker working primarily with Super8 and 16mm film. His works have been screened nationally and abroad, including the NextFest Film Festival (Edmonton), Macabre Faire Film Festival (NY) and the Censured in Canada Festival (Toronto). Formerly the Executive Director of Western Arctic Moving Pictures Film Society in Yellowknife, NWT and the Global Visions Festival Society in Edmonton, he currently runs his arts and heritage consulting company, Promethean Heritage and Cultural Services. Christopher also serves on the board of directors for the Dedfest Genre Festival and the Friends of Rutherford House. He has a thing for old bits of bone, discarded mannequins and farm tools, so keep an open mind if you ever find yourself in his garage. Noel Xavier Noel Xavier recently joined Edmonton Community Foundation as Donor Services Advisor. With over 16 years of experience in the non-profit sector, Noel has worked with arts, social services, immigration and health-related charities. He currently sits on the MacEwan University Arts and Cultural Management Advisory Committee and the Board of Directors of Opera NUOVA. He has also served on the Edmonton Arts Council Operating Jury, the Board of Directors for the Association of Fundraising Professionals, Edmonton & Area Chapter and the 104th Street Action Committee. He volunteers with numerous fundraising events and campaigns in our community.
