4 Northern California DSN Team Petural PJ Shelton Director CITD & DSN GT&L Petural PJ Shelton leads the Doing What Matters initiative to build collaboration between industry, academia and government to develop skillsets needed for the 21st Century workforce. Her passion for this work and understanding of global trade and logistics (GTL) have translated to meaningful partnerships and alliances which will foster future GTL placements. Key alliances include a focused pathway created for young adults and veterans in warehousing/distribution aligned with the Port of Oakland and Co-founding the East Bay Transportation & Logistics Partnership (EBTLP). Partnerships include, Oakland Workforce Development and Pilot City to create a Learn & Earn Training program for students in the community. Believing strongly that the introduction of GTL as a career option must be established early, she s launched projects such as the Maritime 5+1 Summer Academy for 5th graders, held on the Cal State Maritime Campus; A Guided Pathway Roadshow for K-12 and Faculty; and Challenge Academies, educational trainings within the Juvenile detention system. Ms. Shelton serves on the board for the Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals (CSCMP) San Francisco Roundtable, and as County Commissioner of both the Children s Advocacy Group, First Five of Contra Costa County, and AC5 (Arts and Cultural Commission of Contra Costa County). Yvonne Reid Director CITD & DSN GT&L Yvonne has a sound background as an international trade director, educator and workforce development professional with over 25 years of experience in global trade, transportation & logistics operations and sales. She is a forward thinker & a results oriented professional with a commercial management & bridge building approach to expanding businesses globally, driving project targets, training the workforce, and leading teams. Currently the Director of the Center for International Trade Development (CITD) for the Mid-Peninsula, Silicon Valley, Santa Cruz & Monterey regions, she promotes California s international trade and competitiveness by leading trade missions that match international buyers with CA exporters and importers, hosts international education and networking events such as the Inaugural Cybersecurity in the Supply Chain event. Yvonne is a professional educator devoted to preparing students and clients to be better versed in global trade & logistics, cultures, and traditions of other world regions. As a director, educator and workforce development professional, Yvonne remains passionate in assisting businesses expand internationally, uncovering effective ways of inspiring and supporting intellectual development for the 21st century global workforce, and helping colleges become more globalized through academic collaborations with local, national, and international colleges. Angela Cordell DSN GT&L Far Northern CA With 11 years of small business, non-profit and business communications experience, Angela s passion is to empower businesses to realize and re define their global vision and goals. She began her career in California s Capitol and has since worked with clients throughout the State, helping them develop and strategize new programs, products and services. Angela is also the Director of the Far North Center for International Trade Development and promotes a variety of education tools, international business development projects and global business efforts that foster economic sustainability and growth. Lynn Stewart DSN GT&L, Orange County Lynn Stewart has over 20 years of international trade experience as well as 15 years of higher education teaching experience. She is currently the Director of the Orange County Center for International Trade Development (CITD) at the Rancho Santiago Community College District. Lynn is also the current Deputy Sector Navigator for Global Trade & Logistics for Orange County under California s Doing What Matters for Jobs & the Economy initiative. Leah Goold-Haws DSN GT&L, Long Beach City College Leah Goold-Haws is the DSN GT&L for Long Beach City College. Leah consults with businesses involved in global trade, promotes international business courses on behalf of the community college system, assists small business in developing global entry strategies, and increases exposure to global trade and logistics opportunities throughout the region. His career path began at Goldman Sachs and UBS Investment Bank in New York. He is a big proponent of traversing winding career paths to continuously evolve and find the best fit, going from marketing at Adobe to Strategy and Business Development at Live Nation/Ticketmaster. Eddie holds a degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Texas at Austin and a MBA from the University of Southern California where he served as student body President. Rick Hodge Dean Workforce Development at LA Southwest College Rick Hodge, Dean of Workforce Development/CTE at Los Angeles Southwest College is an experienced administrator with more than 26 years of higher education experience in campus management, economic and workforce development, community education, and corporate and business training. Rick has worked in community colleges and universities, both public and private, serving in his 12th year as Dean at Los Angeles Southwest College, Pasadena City College and West Coast University, respectively. Rick specializes in developing CTE and pathway programs in a variety of certificate, credential, and CEU based modalities, particularly in business and healthcare sectors.
5 21st Century Skillset Panelists Tamara Walker Oakland Workforce Development, Business Engagement The City of Oakland Workforce Investment Board (OWIB) is specifically designed to develop policy and allocate funding that bridges the needs of local businesses with local job seekers in high demand, high growth, and high wage industry sectors. Tamara is the lead staff for the development and implementation of the OWIB s Industry Sectors strategies. Prior to her tenure with the City of Oakland, she served as a youth and workforce development manager of a non-profit and local government entity with the responsibilities for daily business operations including human resources, finance, policy implementation, quality control and oversight of project management. John Swinnerton COO Dreisbach Enterprises VP Operations, Dreisbach Enterprises, a Refrigerated Logistics Company, with 4 Facilities and 2 Trucking Divisions, John Swinnerton has 26 years in Refrigerated Logistics Management experience in the SF Bay Area. He s served as the Operations Manager at Richmond Wholesale Meat, a leading exporter of frozen foods to the Pacific Island and General Manager of Dean s Services, a Public Refrigerated Warehouse and Trucking Company specializing in USDA Imported Meat. John has a BA in Near Eastern Studies from UC Berkeley. John is also a founding member of the East Bay Transportation & Logistics Partnership (EBTLP) Laura McCrary Director Human Resources, RK Logistics Group Laura oversees RK Logistics Group s HR department. She is experienced in 3PL, Logistics, and food industry settings. Handling employee relations, training, compensation, performance evaluation management - all balanced out by presentation, motivational speaking and writing for local non-profits, hr, business and health categories. Mentor a person to create a team, mentor a team to change the organization. - LJM Joan Kerr Director Pacific Gas & Electric (PG&E) Before joining PG&E, Joan was Executive Director for AT&T (Pacific Bell and SBC), where she led creation of a best-in-class supplier diversity program. Under Joan Kerr s leadership, Pacific Gas & Electric has more than doubled its annual spending with diverse business enterprises to over $2 billion, an example of the power of a diverse supplier base on our global economy. Joan will share key notes of her vision, progress to date and initiatives underway in industry generally and PG&E in particular. Amy Schulz Co-Creator New World of Work Co-creator and facilitator of New World of Work an educator and Work Force Systems Consultant, Amy is a practitioner in preparing today s students for career opportunities in the 21st century. Through her work on the board with Uganda Development Initiative, Amy extends her passion of entrepreneurship and education innovation with partners in Uganda. Holding the belief that true global development will be successful when communities are empowered to grow through their own infrastructure, including education and entrepreneurial support. Derick Lee Founder & Chief Architect PilotCity The story of PilotCity s inception began with the founder s story of building his hometown s innovation ecosystem due to it s ambition to transform itself into a center of innovation and technology. He states that he met the right people, at the right time, at the right place because he forgot his glasses one day. Little did he know, the serendipity of meeting his hometown s city government staff in the front table of an event he was late to transformed his life forever. 6 Thank you to Doing What Matters Collaboration Participants Community Colleges Doing What Matters, Global Trade & Logistics is in collaboration with the DBS consortium of community colleges in our region to develop curricula and stackable certifications most relevant and needed by the Global Trade & Logistics industry and with the DBS Consortium, in what is known as the Career Ladders Project. We also work directly with the 12 community colleges in our region on courses, curricula and certification development. We d like to thank the educators, administrators and students working with us from these institutions! Industry Partners Doing What Matters works closely with a number of companies and industry leaders to better understand logistics challenges and evolving workforce requirements of the industry and specific companies. We thank these companies for their generous support of our collaboration. Government & Non-Profits And we are working very closely with a number of government resource, economic and regional workforce development organizations nationally and particularly in the SF East Bay on initiatives to better listen to industry and then to collaborate with community colleges, leveraging the substantial resources of these partner organizations.
