Guest Speaker Our guest speaker is famous footballer, analyst, raconteur and rural development activist Pat Spillane. During 17 years playing senior county football with Kerry, Pat won eight All-Ireland medals, nine All Star Awards and 12 Munster championship medals. He was twice selected as Player of the Year and was selected on both the Team of the Century and Team of the Millenium. A former teacher and school principal, he is passionate about community and rural development and the future of many rural areas. He is chairman of the Commission for the Economic Development of Rural Areas (CEDRA) which was set up last year and will submit its report to the government in the autumn.

4 SPEAKER PROFILES PETER BOLGER SIMON COVENEY JUSTIN MCCARTHY Peter Bolger is the 62nd President of the ASA. He is Joint Managing Director of Wexford agri-business company John Bolger & Co Ltd and is the fifth generation of the Bolger family to run the business, established 129 years ago. He started his career as a farm manager working in Australia and New Zealand. Following graduation with a BAgrSc in 2001, he worked with the Irish Farmers Journal where he edited the property section and created the On and Off Farm features page. He returned to the family business in Simon Coveney TD was appointed Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine in March First elected to the Dáil in 1998, he held a range of shadow ministries and was Chairman of the Fine Gael policy development committee prior to the 2011 election. He served as a member of the European Parliament from 2004 to As chairman of the EU Council of Ministers in January-June 2013, he achieved a successful deal on CAP reform. Simon received his agricultural education at Gurteen Agricultural College and holds a BSc in agriculture and land management from the Royal Agriculture College, Gloucestershire. Justin McCarthy took over as Editor of the Irish Farmers Journal in March He joined the Journal as Livestock Editor in In 2008, he won a national journalism award for his investigation of safety standards in Brazilian beef production. From a suckler beef farm in Portaferry, Co. Down, Justin is a graduate in agricultural science from Harper Adams University. Prior to joining the Journal, he worked with the ABP Food Group and as a specialist adviser on the Teagasc/Dawn Meats beef development programme. GERRY BOYLE ALAN RENWICK PEKKA PESONEN Professor Gerry Boyle has been Director of Teagasc since He is former head of the Economics Department at NUI Maynooth and also served on the university s governing body and as a Director of the Maynooth University Foundation. He was Economic Adviser to Taoiseach John Bruton in the government. He also acted as international consultant on agricultural policy with the World Bank. He has written several books and has completed over 30 major commissioned research reports. Gerry holds a BA, MA and PhD from UCD. Alan Renwick was appointed Professor of Agricultural Economics at the UCD School of Agriculture and Food Science in November He joined UCD from the Land Economy and Environment Research Group at SAC in Edinburgh. Prior to that, he spent 12 years in the Centre for Rural Economic Research at the University of Cambridge. He has undertaken several studies on agriculture, trade and agri-environmental policy the UK government and other agencies. Alan holds a degree in agricultural economics from Wye College and a PhD from Newcastle University. Reared on a farm in Finland, Pekka Pesonen is General Secretary of Brussels-based COPA-COGECA, the body representing 77 national farm organisations in Europe. An agricultural economist, he worked as an advisor for the Federation of Finish co-operatives and farmers union between 1997 and He was General Secretary of the Finnish Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry from 2005 to He has been in his current role since KARINA PIERCE MATTHEW JOHNSON GARY NOLAN Dr Karina Pierce is lecturer in dairy husbandry in the UCD School of Agriculture and Food Science and is coordinator of the UCD/ Teagasc degree programme in dairy business. A native of Roundwood, Co. Wicklow, she graduated with a BAgrSc in 2001 and completed her PhD in animal nutrition in She worked as a nutritionist with Brett Brothers for two years before returning to UCD. Karina was ASA President in 2011/12. She is a member of the Board of Teagasc. Mathew Johnson is a dairy analyst within Rabobank s Food & Agribusiness Research and Advisory Department, based in Utrecht, Holland. He provides insight and analysis on dairy trends in Europe to farming and corporate clients. Prior to joining Rabobank in June 2013, Matthew spent almost 10 years working in Britain as an analyst with DairyCo, an organisation which provides information and knowledge to dairy farmers. He holds an MA in economics from Heriot-Watt University, Edinburgh. Westmeath-born agricultural graduate Gary Nolan started share milking in Missouri in This year he and his wife Siobhán calved 1,800 cows. They plan to calve 3,140 cows in The 2020 target is 10,000 cows in four locations. On graduating from UCD in 2003, Gary went to New Zealand where he worked as a farm manager and contract milker. He returned home in 2006 and set up a dairy consultancy business with clients in Ireland and the UK. He and Siobhán moved to Missouri in 2009.
5 PHILIP FEENEY BRENDAN MULDOWNEY MATT O KEEFFE From Ballyduff, Co Waterford, Philip Feeney moved to Staffordshire in 2002 to take a herdsman position on a 250-cow farm. By 2007, he had become farm manager and the herd had grown to 400 cows. He then moved to a contract farming position on a 300 cow dairy farm in Cheshire. He is now involved in a 50/50 partnership with the owners, milking over 500 cows in 2013 with plans to reach 650 cows in From Kilkenny, Brendan Muldowney completed his agricultural education at Kildalton College in He joined the financial services sector, studied parttime and graduated with a business degree. He also worked with his father in expanding the dairy herd from 45 to 150 cows. In 2010, he opted for full-time farming. He did a deal with a land owner in Scotland and started with 300 cows in December He and his wife Maureen are now milking 500 cows and will milk 600 in spring Matt O Keeffe is a farmer and journalist. He runs an intensive dairy farm in partnership with his brother and nephew at Clara, Co. Kilkenny and is also Deputy Editor of the Irish Farmers Monthly. His deep involvement in educational and farming organisations include former President of Macra na Feirme, former Chairman of the Farm Apprenticeship Board and former Deputy Chairman of the IFA National Dairy Committee. Matt also presents a weekly farming programme on the local Carlow/Kilkenny radio station (KCLR96FM). JIM GALVIN Jim Galvin is Chief Executive of Chicago-based Lakeview Energy with bio-refineries in Iowa and Ohio, producing 450 million litres of bio-fuels annually as well as 300,000 tonnes of animal feed and 9,000 tonnes of corn oil. It is developing a 300MW wind energy project in South Dakota. From Inchigeelagh, Co Cork, Jim graduated with a BAgrSc from UCD in 1994 and completed a MAgr Sc in Moorepark in After a year as a Teagasc adviser he joined SWS in 1997 and was part of the team that developed SWS into one of Ireland s leading renewable energy companies. He became Chief Executive of Fleming Energy in 2006 and, through an MBO, established Lakeview Energy in ERIC DONALD Eric Donald is Head of Public Relations and Communications with Teagasc. On graduating from UCD with a BAgrSc in 1991, he joined RTE Radio 1 as a producer/presenter of agricultural programmes. In 2000, he joined the Irish Farmers Journal as EU and Agribusiness Editor. He is in his current position with Teagasc since Eric also runs a tillage and sheep farm in Carlow and is an active member of a farmer buying group. JOHN O BRIEN Dr John O Brien is Head of Food Safety and Quality at the Nestle Research Centre in Lausanne, Switzerland. He was Chief Executive of the Food Safety Authority of Ireland and held a number of senior posts with the Danone Group in Paris. He is currently Chairman of the Board of Directors of the International Life Sciences Institute, Europe, a member of the International Scientific Advisory Board at Queen s University and a visiting professor at the University of Ulster. A graduate of UCC and the University of Surrey, John s training was in toxicology, food chemistry and food science. PAT O KEEFFE Pat O Keeffe is Deputy Editor and News Editor of the Irish Farmers Journal. From a dairy and beef farm in east Cork, Pat graduated from UCD with a BAgrSc in 1996 and completed a joint UCD-New Zealand Masters in Animal Science in He has worked with the Journal since Pat was ASA President in 2010/2011. He is a former Chairman of the Guild of Agricultural Journalists of Ireland and is a board member and Treasurer of Agri Aware, the Irish agrifood education body. PAUL FINNERTY Paul Finnerty is Group Chief Executive with ABP Food Group, one of Ireland s largest private companies and Europe s largest beef exporter. ABP processes over 1 million cattle each year in more than 20 plants in Ireland, the UK and Poland. In 1995, it was the first Irish beef processor to launch its own beef quality assurance scheme. The company, which has also significant interests in convenience foods, pet food and renewable energy, employs 8,000 people and has total sales in excess on 2 billion/annum. Paul joined ABP in He previously worked with KPMG Corporate Finance. ACCOMMODATION PATRICK BOYLE Patrick Boyle is President and Chief Executive of the American Meat Institute (AMI) in Washington, a position he has held since The AMI is the national association representing the interests of the US $95 billion ( 70bn) meat and poultry industry. Before joining AMI, Patrick worked with the USDA and as an attorney for the United Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Association and the National Grocers Association. He serves with the Secretary of Agriculture and the US Trade Representative on the Agricultural Policy Advisory Committee and is a member of the US Chamber of Commerce s Committee of 100. He received his law degree from the Catholic University of America in Washington DC. ANNE-MARIE DOHENY Roscommon-born agricultural graduate Anne-Marie Doheny, her husband and fellow agricultural graduate Brian, developed a dairy enterprise at Tullaroan, Co. Kilkenny in They are now milking 140 cows with plans to hit 220 post Anne Marie graduated in She moved to New Zealand in 2003 and worked for two years with an agri-consultancy company and for a further two years as joint manager with Brian of a 700-cow farm. While in NZ, she founded the company Canterbury Celtic Connections which has placed over 400 Irish students on NZ dairy farms. Accommodation can be booked directly with the Tower Hotel.
