3 The annual Japan Update Symposium provides an in-depth look at key trends in U.S.-Japan relations and their particular relevance to North Texas business and trade. The 2017 theme, U.S.-Japan Relations under the New U.S. Administration, was selected to provide a forum for examining the state of the U.S.-Japan relationship in the early days of President Trump s incumbency. The Japan-America Society of Dallas/Fort Worth, as the leading non-profit organization promoting U.S.-Japan relations in North Texas, is strongly committed to presenting high-quality and timely discussions on economics, trade, and business. The growing number of Japanese businesses in North Texas underscores the importance of the Japan Update Symposium, as well as other programs offered by the Japan-America Society to promote mutual understanding, friendship, and economic cooperation. Today s program is part of a series presented by Japan-America Societies across the U.S., made possible through the cooperation of the Sasakawa Peace Foundation and the National Association of Japan-America Societies. This series brings expert perspectives on contemporary issues to local audiences and fills an important need for information at a time of increased interest in the bilateral relationship between the two countries. 5 SPEAKER BIOGRAPHIES Joseph M. Young Director for Japanese Affairs, East Asian/Pacific Affairs Bureau U.S. Department of State Mr. Young joined the U.S. Foreign Service in During his diplomatic career, he has served abroad in Singapore as a consular affairs officer; in Kenya as a political affairs officer; in China as an economic affairs officer; in Ireland as political-economic section chief; and most recently in Japan, where he was the political-military unit chief at the U.S. Embassy in Tokyo from 2009 to He has received language training in Swahili, Chinese, and Japanese at the Foreign Service Institute. Mr. Young s domestic posts include: economic researcher at the Foreign Service Institute; aviation negotiations officer at the Economics Bureau of the State Department; and deputy foreign policy advisor in the U.S. Pacific Command. He earned an M.A. in foreign service at Georgetown University and a B.A. in classics at Borromeo College. Dr. Haruo Iguchi Professor of International Studies Kwansei Gakuin University As a professor at KGU s School of International Studies, Dr. Iguchi teaches courses in U.S. foreign relations, Japanese foreign relations, U.S.-East Asia relations, and U.S. politics. Before joining the university in 2015, he was a faculty member at Nagoya University Graduate School of Environmental Studies for 13 years. Dr. Iguchi was a Fulbright visiting scholar at the Harvard-Yenching Institute in and an associate in the U.S.-Japan Program at Harvard s Weatherhead Center for International Affairs in He received his Ph.D. in history at the University of Chicago and a B.A. in business economics at Brown University. His research publications have centered on the international history of relations between the U.S. and East Asia. His most recent book, Ayukawa Yoshisuke and Economic Internationalism, won the Suntory Prize in Politics and Economics, as well as the Kigyoka Kenkyu Forum (Forum for Entrepreneurial Studies) Book Prize. 6 SPEAKER BIOGRAPHIES Junji Kurokawa Chief Executive Director JETRO Houston (Japan External Trade Organization) Mr. Kurokawa joined the Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO) after receiving his B.A. in economics from Keio University in Japan. He assumed his post in Houston in November At JETRO, Mr. Kurokawa promotes mutual trade and investment between Japan and the South Central region of the U.S., including Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Oklahoma, and Texas. His work focuses on providing business development services to companies in the region that plan to establish or expand their corporate presence in Japan. Mr. Kurokawa has more than twenty years of professional experience in business development, workforce development and marketing. Prior to his appointment in Houston, he worked as the director of the North America Division of Overseas Research at JETRO s Tokyo headquarters, where he was responsible for supervising research projects and editing publications received from North American JETRO offices. Tim B. Keith President Texas Central Partners P4 Mr. Keith is currently leading the development of a high-speed passenger railway that will connect Dallas and Houston, the first project of its kind in the U.S. As a seasoned executive and investor with nearly 25 years of financial and operational experience in large real estate and infrastructure projects, he has developed key relationships and perspectives critical to Texas Central Partners success. Mr. Keith previously co-founded and served as chief investment officer of HKS Capital Advisors and held executive positions at RREEF/Deutsche Bank Infrastructure Investments, RREEF America LLC, Cabot Industrial Trust, and Hunt Realty Investments. He is currently a member of the Westmont College board of trustees, and he previously served as board chairman of Maher Terminals, USA. He graduated magna cum laude with a B.A. in economics and business administration from Westmont College.

7 Howard E. Kass Vice President Regulatory Affairs American Airlines In his role at American Airlines, Mr. Kass is responsible for regulatory compliance, policy development, corporate security, and international affairs. He works closely with regulatory authorities in Washington, D.C., and around the world. Mr. Kass worked for US Airways, most recently as vice president of legal and governmental affairs, before its merger with American in Before joining US Airways, he worked for the Transportation Security Administration; the management consulting firm Booz Allen Hamilton; and GKMG Consulting Services, where he advised airport and transportation industry clients on Department of Transportation and FAA regulations. He holds an M.B.A. from Johns Hopkins University, a J.D. from Case Western Reserve University School of Law, and a B.A. from Michigan State University. Dr. Hiroki Takeuchi Associate Professor, Political Science, SMU Director, Sun & Star Program on Japan and East Asia in the Tower Center Dr. Takeuchi s research and teaching interests include Chinese and Japanese politics, comparative political economy of authoritarian regimes, and international relations of East Asian, as well as applying game theory to political science. He has published articles in numerous professional journals and is the author of Rural Tax Reforms in Contemporary China: Revenue, Resistance, and Authoritarian Rule (Cambridge University Press, 2014). Dr. Takeuchi received his Ph.D. in political science from UCLA, his M.A. in Asian studies from University of California at Berkeley, and his B.A. in economics from Keio University. P5
