1 Defending Our Data: Privacy, Security, and the Wave of Data Breaches April 7, 2017 Chicago-Kent College of Law Speaker Biographies Co-Conveners Lori Andrews, Esq. Lori Andrews is a University Distinguished Professor of Law at IIT Chicago-Kent College of Law and Director of IIT s Institute for Science, Law and Technology. She has published widely on internet privacy, including her latest book, I Know Who You Are and I Saw What You Did: Social Networks and the Death of Privacy (2013). Professor Andrews has been an adviser on technologies to Congress, the World Health Organization, the National Institutes of Health, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the federal Department of Health and Human Services, the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences, and several foreign nations, including the Emirate of Dubai, the French National Assembly, and G8 Science Ministers. Professor Andrews path-breaking litigation about technologies caused the National Law Journal to list her as one of the 100 Most Influential Lawyers in America. In 2005, she was made an Honorary Fellow of the American College of Legal Medicine for her distinguished achievement in the field of legal medicine. She is the author of eleven nonfiction books and three mysteries involving a fictional geneticist. The ABA Journal describes Professor Andrews as a lawyer with a literary bent who has the scientific chops to rival any CSI investigator. She received her B.A. summa cum laude from Yale College and her J.D. from Yale Law School. Richard Warner, Esq., Ph.D. Richard Warner joined the IIT Chicago-Kent faculty in Prior to that, he was an Assistant Professor of Philosophy at the University of Southern California and the University of Pennsylvania. He teaches Contracts, Remedies, Jurisprudence, Internet Law, and Ecommerce Law and has published several articles and books on philosophical and legal topics, including his most recent book, Unauthorized Access: The Crisis in Online Privacy and Information Security, written with Professor Robert Sloan. Professor Warner was named a Norman and Edna Freehling Scholar in 2002 and is the faculty director of Chicago-Kent s Center for Law and Computers. He is the director of Chicago-Kent s Project Poland and visiting foreign professor at University of Gdańsk, Poland, where he is director of the School of American Law. He is also director of the School of American Law at the University of Wrocław, Poland. From 1994 to 1996, he 1

2 was president of InterActive Computer Tutorials, a software company, and from 1998 to 2000, he was director of Building Businesses on the Web, an Illinois Institute of Technology executive education program concerning e-commerce. Professor Warner s research concerns the regulation of business competition on the internet and internet security as well as the nature of human rights and their grounding in personal freedom. He has lectured on internet security at the second United Nations Economic Commission for Europe workshop, E-Regulations: E-Security and Knowledge Economy, in Geneva, Switzerland, and, at the invitation of the FBI, on global cybercrime before the Chicago Crime Commission. He was the principal investigator for Using Education to Combat White Collar Crime, a U.S. State Department grant devoted to combating money laundering in Ukraine from 2000 to He is currently a member of the U.S. Secret Service s Electronic and Financial Crimes Taskforce. Professor Warner received his B.A. (with distinction and Phi Beta Kappa) in English from Stanford University and his Ph.D. in philosophy from the University of California, Berkeley. He earned his J.D. from the University of Southern California, where he served on the Southern California Law Review and was elected to the Order of the Coif. Speakers Lynn Goldstein, Esq. Lynn Goldstein is a data protection expert and the founder of Indicium LLC. She is a member of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security Data Protection Integrity Advisory Committee and serves as a chair of the Ethics Advisory Council and the Privacy & Security Advisory Council of the HUMAN Project. She was previously the Chief Data Officer for the Center for Urban Science + Progress at New York University and the Chief Privacy Officer and Privacy General Counsel for JPMorgan Chase. Goldstein is a frequent speaker on privacy topics and has been an Adjunct Professor of Law at both Syracuse University and Northwestern University School of Law, as well as an instructor for the National Institute of Trial Advocacy. She has also published several articles as well as a chapter on the use of jury consultants in Successful Partnering Between Inside and Outside Counsel. Goldstein received her B.A. from the University of Iowa and her J.D. from Chicago-Kent College of Law. Cora Han, Esq. Cora Han is a senior attorney in the Federal Trade Commission s Division of Privacy and Identity Protection, where she investigates and prosecutes violations of federal laws 2

3 protecting the privacy and security of consumer information and works on related policy matters. She has played a leading role working on health privacy matters for the FTC, including organizing the FTC s seminar on Consumer Generated and Controlled Health Data, and moderating the discussion on connected health at the FTC s workshop on the Internet of Things. In addition, Han was one of the principal authors of the FTC s Health Breach Notification Rule. Prior to joining the FTC, Han was an attorney with WilmerHale, where her practice focused on trademark, copyright, and media law. In addition to her work with the FTC, Han is also an Adjunct Professor at George Mason University School of Law, where she teaches a class on consumer protection law. Han received her B.A. in government from Harvard University and her J.D. from the University of Chicago Law School. Kashmir Hill, M.A. Kashmir Hill is a senior editor and investigative reporter at Fusion Media Group and Gizmodo, and former senior online editor for Forbes Magazine. Her work focuses on the intersection between privacy and technology and has been featured in numerous publications. In the course of her reporting, Hill has hacked into a stranger s smart home, told a Supreme Court Justice about a law school class stalking him, lived on Bitcoin for a week, paid an unexpected visit to the NSA datacenter in Utah, and revealed Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg s private photos to the world. Hill has been described as as the single most interesting and accessible writer on the culture and technology of privacy and has presented widely on these topics. Articles she has written for Fusion include The Incredibly Boring Motive Behind one of the Hugest Hacks Ever and How an Internet Mapping Glitch Turned a Random Kansas Farm into a Digital Hell. Hill received her B.A. from Duke University and a M.A. in journalism from New York University. Kevin Kalinich, Esq. Kevin Kalinich is the global cyber risk practice leader for Aon Risk Solutions, focusing on identifying exposures and developing insurance solutions in areas that include Technology Errors and Omissions, Network Risk, and Intellectual Property. Prior to joining Aon in 2000, he served as Chief Executive Officer at Altima Technologies. Before Altima, he was a partner at Chapman and Cutler, where he specialized in general corporate matters, intellectual property, mergers and acquisitions, venture capital, institutional investor and IPO transactions. Kalinich is a frequent speaker at a variety of venues, including CNBC, RIMS, American Bar Association, American Bankers Association, FERMA, World Economic Forum, 3

4 Stanford Program in Law, Science and Technology, CCH Computer Law Advisory Council, and Association of Financial Professionals. Kalinich received his B.A. in economics and mathematics from Yale University and his J.D. from the University of Michigan. Chris Kanich, Ph.D. Chris Kanich is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Computer Science at the University of Illinois at Chicago. His research focuses on the socio-technical aspects of cybersecurity, including increasing the security and privacy of Internet users. Professor Kanich has published numerous articles on cybersecurity, including Characterizing Fraud and Its Ramifications in Affiliate Marketing Networks in the Journal of Cybersecurity. In addition to courses on computer systems and networks, he has also taught a course on the dark side of data. He headed the Cloudsweeper project at the University of Illinois at Chicago, which focused on enabling data-centric document management for secure cloud services and was featured in several online articles. Professor Kanich received his B.S. from Purdue University and his Ph.D. from the University of California, Dan Diego. Bart A. Lazar, Esq. Bart Lazar is a pioneer in the areas of data privacy and security, Internet law and social media. A partner in the Chicago office of Seyfarth Shaw LLP since 1995, Lazar formed the firm s Privacy and Data Security Practice in 1998 and continues to handle significant privacy and security counseling, transaction and litigation matters, as well as cutting-edge security breach, cybercrime, IP and anonymity issues. Lazar has handled such precedent-setting cases as the first Internet privacy case brought by the Federal Trade Commission on behalf of GeoCities; the first database security breach case brought by the New York Attorney General on behalf of CS Stars; the first temporary restraining orders and impoundment orders to investigate and halt cyberpiracy and assisted in civil cases and investigations that resulted in some of the first criminal prosecutions for cybercrime. He has successfully policed counterfeit merchandise at events such as the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas and the NBA Finals in Chicago and has represented major brands in breaking up international and domestic counterfeiting rings. He also helped to enact Illinois anti-counterfeiting statute, including drafting and negotiating the language of the statute and testifying on its behalf. In the advertising, social media and trademark space he works with leading agencies and brands to develop, commercialize and enforce their intellectual property rights both online and offline. 4

5 Lazar received his B.A. in sociology from the University of Chicago and his J.D., with honors, from Chicago-Kent College of Law. He also received an LL.M. in intellectual property and trade regulation from New York University School of Law. Lazar was awarded the Chicago-Kent Alumni Professional Achievement Award in Joan Lebow, Esq. Joan Lebow is a partner at Quintairos, Prieto, Wood & Boyer and represents healthcare organizations and related businesses. Previously, she was a former in-house counsel to Northwestern Memorial Hospital and Illinois Masonic Medical Center as well as General Counsel of ibex Healthdata Systems. Lebow is also a member of the board of directors of the Illinois Association of Healthcare Attorneys and an Adjunct Professor teaching courses on healthcare law at Chicago-Kent College of Law and the University of Illinois at Chicago. Lebow has authored several articles and chapters on health care information and data privacy. She co-authored the sixth edition of The Law of Medical Practice in Illinois as well as the third edition of Problems in Health Care Law. She has presented on the topics of health care and privacy to many audiences, including Regent Surgical Health and at the Illinois State Medical Society Annual Meeting. Lebow has also been listed as a leading lawyer in health care law in both Illinois Super Lawyers and Best Lawyers. Lebow received her B.A. in religious philosophy from Pitzer College and her J.D. from Chicago-Kent College of Law. Amir Missaghi, Esq. Amir Missaghi is an Associate at Edelson. He specializes in cyber security and privacy litigation. Missaghi has worked on dozens of class action suits against large consumer technology companies. Previously, Amir worked as a programmer and data analyst at a Fortune 50 company. Missaghi has spoken on privacy law on multiple occasions, including a panel on the privacy battleground at Chicago-Kent College of Law last year. He was also a teaching assistant in Property during law school. Missaghi received his B.S. and M.S. from the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities and his J.D. from Chicago-Kent College of Law. Robert Sloan, Ph.D. Robert Sloan is a Professor and Department Head of the Department of Computer Science at the University of Illinois at Chicago. He also serves as a department head of BRAID initiative, which focuses on improving gender and racial/ethnic diversity in the field of computer science. His research includes work on privacy, legal, and policy issues related to computer security 5

6 Professor Sloan has written over 75 articles and several books, including Unauthorized Access: The Crisis in Online Privacy and Security with Professor Richard Warner. He has also given talks at numerous conferences and workshops on the topics of privacy and computer science. In addition to teaching a law-themed class on program design at Chicago-Kent last fall, Professor Sloan has also taught courses at the University of Illinois at Chicago on ethical and legal issues in computing Professor Sloan received his B.A. summa cum laude from Yale College and his Ph.D. from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He also took classes in law at Yale Law School. Aaron Tantleff, Esq. Aaron Tantleff is a partner in Foley & Lardner LLP s Technology Transactions & Outsourcing and Privacy, Security & Information Management practice groups. He represents companies in various technology, information, privacy, security and intellectual property related matters, having served as both in-house and outside counsel and served as the global director of IP for a global software company and as acting AGC for a global information technology and management consulting company. Tantleff is a frequent speaker in technology, security, privacy and outsourcing and is regularly quoted in international and top-tier media, including The Wall Street Journal, Reuters, Politico and Fortune, on timely topics impacting clients such as cyberattacks, privacy law updates, and data protection, both domestically and in the EU. Tantleff has been retained for data protection, cybersecurity and big data / IoT programs by companies across all industries and sizes, domestically and abroad, including a number of the Fortune 100 companies, and recently presented to and educated a number of state legislators on cybersecurity legislation.. He has also been recognized in Illinois Super Lawyers-Rising Stars and The Legal 500. Tantleff received his B.A. from Northwestern University and his J.D. from Chicago-Kent College of Law. 6
