W I N T E R 2010 ISSUE NUMBER 13 illustration by Scott Woods ATTRACTING THE WORLD S BEST WESTERN AIMS TO HAVE 100 NEW CHAIRS WITHIN THE NEXT DECADE WESTERN HAS SET ITS SIGHTS ON BECOMING A GLOBAL LEADER IN RESEARCH WITH THE CREATION OF UP TO EIGHT NEW ENDOWED CHAIRS BY APRIL 2011 AND A TOTAL OF 100 NEW CHAIRS IN THE NEXT TEN YEARS. endowed chairs program this year. These chairs will bring new knowledge and research, teaching strengths, and will provide sustained leadership in fields of strategic importance to the University. During this fiscal year, the University will match private gifts of $1.5 million to establish a permanent $3-million endowed chair. The first chair established under the matching program was announced by Western s Richard Ivey School of Business in September, thanks to a gift from Ian Ihnatowycz and Marta Witer, who directed $1.5 million of their $3.5-million gift to endow a Chair in Leadership. President Amit Chakma has laid out the ambitious plan, intended to help attract some of the world s best researchers to Western, that commits up to $12.5 million for the matching The quality of leadership helps determine the quantity of success, says Ihnatowycz, a 1982 graduate of the Ivey MBA program. Ivey has always attracted talented students with strong leadership aspirations. I believe it is important their skills as leaders be nurtured and developed so they re prepared for the evolving demands and challenges that await them. INSIDE The second chair, announced in October, is the Cecil and Linda Rorabeck Chair in Molecular Neuroscience and Vascular Biology, located in Western s Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry, Robarts Research Institute. Their gift of $1 million, along with the late Myra Millson s $500,000 bequest to Schulich, will see a total donation of $1.5 million, to be matched by Western to create the $3-million endowed chair. 2 Schulich Dean sets sights high When we make major donations, we often look to utilize a matching program so our gift is leveraged to create a greater impact, notes Cec Rorabeck. We applaud the University s direction and we re pleased to play some small part in it. 2 3 Chakma says, These gifts are the beginning of a new thrust by our University to show the world the impact our research can achieve. RBC gift offers Engineering student an experience of a lifetime For more on the new gift from Cecil and Linda Rorabeck see page 2. WHAT IS A CHAIR? A Chair is a critical tool in the University s ability to attract, support and retain senior faculty teachers and researchers. It is a pool of capital that is invested to grow over time, with an annual allocation from income used to help pay for the incumbent s research, graduate students, protected research time, and often part of the salary in the individual. A Chair holder is someone of great distinction, the best in their field, who brings leadership, knowledge and expertise to the University. They are the driving force behind the research and academic work within their area, contributing to the betterment of society while raising Western s reputation as a globally-recognized destination. These individuals are technology creators, economy builders, society servers, and health researchers. 4 4 Multi-million dollar software donation benefits Earth Sciences students Holiday greetings and thank you from The 1878 Societies Honorary Chair

2 DONATION FROM THE HEART BRINGS HOPE FOR BRAIN RESEARCH POSSIBILITIES INNOVATIVE INSTITUTE AT WESTERN HELPS ANSWER THE TOUGH QUESTIONS SCIENCE EMPOWERS US. THE HUMANITIES TEACH US TO USE THAT POWER WISELY, SAYS CANADIAN BUSINESS HALL OF FAME INDUCTEE AND WESTERN ALUMNUS, JOSEPH ROTMAN (BA 57). The more successful Rotman became in business, the more he felt he was falling back on the principles and disciplines of critical thinking he learned in philosophy at Western. This led him to make a $4-million donation to Western in 2008, creating the Rotman Institute of Philosophy. Dr. Cecil and Linda Rorabeck THE RORABECKS HAVE BEEN MAKING QUIET BUT GENEROUS CONTRIBUTIONS TO THEIR COMMUNITY FOR MANY YEARS THROUGH PHILANTHROPY, VOLUNTEER AND PROFESSIONAL WORK. THEIR BELIEF IN THE PROMISE OF MEDICAL RESEARCH HAS LED DR. CECIL AND LINDA RORABECK TO DONATE $1 MILLION TO SCHULICH S ROBARTS RESEARCH INSTITUTE. We believe in science and we believe in supporting excellence. Robarts is helping redefine excellence internationally and we want to continue to support that and make it even stronger if we can. The Rorabeck gift is being combined with Myra Millson s $500,000 bequest to Western s Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry. This will create a total donation of $1.5 million, which will be matched by the University to create a $3-million endowed chair. The Cecil and Linda Rorabeck Chair in Molecular Neuroscience and Vascular Biology will support an appointed scientist at the new Centre for Molecular Neuroscience and Vascular Biology at Robarts. Ms. Millson s gift is being honoured separately. In recent years, Rorabeck had the opportunity to see the impact of Robarts research. He served as the Institute s interim CEO and Scientific Director, overseeing its merger and consolidation with Western, which was finalized in June I have been fortunate to see from the inside the extraordinary work and resources it takes to develop and bring discoveries to the patients who are waiting every day, filled with hope. For Linda and for me, the support of a research chair was a meaningful way to show our commitment to that research. Dr. Rorabeck is one of the world s leading experts on hip and knee replacement surgery, a Professor Emeritus at The University of Western Ontario and former Chair of Orthopaedic Surgery at the University and London Health Sciences Centre. A Western graduate (MD 68), he received an honorary degree from his alma mater last October in recognition of the worldwide impact he has made in medicine, and for his dedication to the community. I am convinced we have the opportunity at Western to do something unique, says Rotman. We can have significant impact by helping define the scope of the problems that society faces because of the rapid changes in science and technology, as well as to ensure we advance questions that are not being asked. We must look at science and technology through the lens of philosophy. While the Rotman Institute officially opened in October, faculty, staff and students have been busy building momentum for the last two years. A key early step was the establishment of an International Advisory Committee comprised of some of the world s leading scientists and philosophers. In July of this year, Eric Desjardins, philosopher of biology who is doing cutting-edge work on ecosystem restoration, was hired for a new tenure-track faculty position created for the Institute. In October, the Institute hosted an international conference, bringing together 70 leading philosophers and scientists from around the world to advance the understanding of the complex interactions between organisms and their environments. We want to foster dialogue and collaboration between philosophers and scientists and engage people around the world - policymakers, students and the public - in the discussion, says Charles Weijer, Director of the Rotman Institute and Canada Research Chair in Bioethics. This work will build bridges between the humanities and the sciences and will also help the general public understand the implications of contemporary science for Canadian society. Philosophy doctoral student Valerie Racine feels privileged to be a part of the team of graduate students in the Rotman Institute. Being part of the Institute means having a great mentoring experience as students are included in all the Institute s activities and we have close contact with faculty members, visiting scholars, post-doctoral fellows and fellow graduate students, says Racine. Western s philosophy department is world-renowned for its strength in the philosophy of science. By building on that strength, the Rotman Institute can become an avant garde place in academia where there is an emphasis on collaboration and interdisciplinary work that matters for society at large. To learn more about the Rotman Institute of Philosophy at Western, visit He admits it may seem odd that an orthopaedic surgeon would support neuroscience and vascular biology, but with neurodegenerative disease affecting some family members, the connection is clear. We re not under any illusions that we re going to solve Alzheimer s disease in the next six months or answer all the questions about stroke or MS, but I think the technology is such that with enough funding and expertise, there is a possibility of certainly making some inroads. Philosophy doctoral student Valerie Racine feels privileged to be able to work directly with the Director of the Rotman Institute of Philosophy, Charles Weijer (right), along with other students and faculty at The Rotman Institute of Philosophy. NEW DEAN SETS SIGHTS HIGH FOR SCHULICH SCHOOL OF MEDICINE & DENTISTRY SINCE DR. MICHAEL STRONG BEGAN HIS ROLE AS DEAN OF WESTERN S SCHULICH SCHOOL OF MEDICINE & DENTISTRY IN JULY 2010 HE HAS BEEN BUSY LAYING OUT HIS VISION FOR THE ROAD AHEAD. IT HAS BEEN AN ENERGETIC SIX MONTHS IN WHICH STRONG HAS MET WITH FACULTY, STAFF, STUDENTS, WESTERN COLLEAGUES, COMMUNITY PARTNERS AND ALUMNI TO BEGIN CHARTING A COURSE FOR THE NEXT TEN TO 15 YEARS. Over the past decade, the School has grown immensely both in terms of research and education. We are at the tipping point now of taking our success even higher to enhance Western s reputation nationally and internationally. His bold vision includes substantially increasing support for research. Strong has struck a research review task team with more than 40 faculty representatives to examine the Schulich research enterprise and its hospital research partners. Initial findings are expected in early 2011 and will set the stage for a vastly expanded support system for Schulich scientists and a more thematic, interdisciplinary approach. The research plan will also include a reinvigoration of the Robarts Research Institute as a key component of the research strategy for Schulich. Though research may be a key focus for Strong, who is one of North America s lead ALS reserchers and a distinguished university professor, he hasn t taken his eyes off education. Maintaining the exceptional quality of Schulich s professional programs in Medicine and Dentistry is a priority and expansion in both Graduate Studies and the Bachelor of Medical Sciences program is on the horizon, says Strong. A brand new component is also in the works: a school of public health. We are facing an aging population that will have a tremendous impact on health care delivery and health policy. We have to begin planning for it now and preparing our students, says Strong. Western has the expertise to form a unique core of individuals focused on these very important questions. The School is anticipated to launch a Masters of Public Health program in September 2012, followed soon after by a Doctoral program. In support of the new vision, Schulich Medicine & Dentistry is launching an ambitious fundraising campaign. Besides a new school of public health, highlights of the campaign include building and facility renewal; research investment; students scholarships; and additional chairs, programs and projects. A long-term goal is a signature building which will be a bold symbol of how medical education, research and community health come together to promote and deliver the health care of the future, explains Strong. The building will support dynamic, thematic-based research groups and provide a focal point for engaging the southwestern

INTERNATIONAL DONOR S PASSION FOR LIFE BENEFITS LAW STUDENTS 3 HIS WESTERN EDUCATION OPENED DOORS FOR HIM, AND NOW HE S OPENING DOORS FOR OTHERS. This year, Kevin Comeau (LLB 82) added another $25,000 donation to continue supporting the Kevin J. Comeau Continuing Scholarship he created in the Faculty of Law in This new gift brings his total giving to almost $200,000. Comeau says his time at Western taught him two things: how much he didn t know, and to question what he did know. And so began his life adventure to find and pursue his passions. After graduation he first worked as a lawyer in Canada for several years. He recalls his fellow lawyers as smart and hard-working, often pulling all-nighters and working weekends. But after a Bermudan vacation where he met young professionals who played golf, tennis, or sailed after work each day, he knew he had to choose a different, more balanced, path. In 1989 he moved to Bermuda where he enjoyed a decade of work at a law firm, and embraced life outside the office. Then, at the age of 41, he retired. I m often asked why I retired so young, when I had only enough money to pay the bills but not much more. I loved my job, and I could have earned much more money if I had continued to work. My answer: I simply did as my philosophy professor taught me that first week at Western. I questioned everything, even a great job. Some people are motivated by money and others, by power. I m motivated by time. I don t know how many years, months or days I have left on earth, but I want to live them to the fullest. During his first years of retirement, Comeau did just that. He moved to France to study French; learned to play guitar; and eventually pursued a masters in fine art in creative writing at the University of Nevada in Las Vegas where he met the love of his life, Karenmary. Kevin Comeau and his daughter, Chloe, swimming with a dolphin in Bermuda. In 2006, Comeau found himself back in Bermuda with Karenmary and their daughter Chloe and started to question whether his time could be put to better use. He had spent years as a lawyer finding problems, assessing risks and developing plans to minimize or eliminate those risks. He decided to use those same skills to help reduce the social burdens that were becoming more prevalent in Bermuda and now drafts social policies to help bridge the growing gap between the haves and the have-nots. An old Western friend of mine, Jim Harrison, once told me you should only work where you think you can add value. That advice has helped me discover the pleasure of working on something I m passionate about. Comeau is also passionate about helping Western law students. He is one of Western s many international donors who feel compelled to give back to their university. Who s to know if our donations will allow some young woman to forgo her part-time job to concentrate on her schoolwork, which allows her to get into medical school? Who s to know if our donations will allow a young man to be the first in his family to work with his mind instead of his hands? I don t know what effect my donations will eventually have, but I do know that by giving to Western, something positive will happen somewhere, to someone. WESTERNMAKESADIFFERENCE.CA EXPERIENTIAL EDUCATION PRODUCES EXPONENTIAL BENEFITS I EXPERIENCED THE POWER OF COMMUNITY OF PEOPLE COMING TOGETHER NO MATTER WHAT RACE, GENDER OR RELIGION AND HELPING EACH OTHER REBUILD AFTER A DISASTER. the service and students benefit from the learning received. RBC and Western have recognized this value and I encourage them to continue supporting inspired students who want to experience what the world has to offer. This is a lesson fourth-year Engineering/Business student Sylvia Broschinski says she learned and can apply right here at home, thanks to the RBC Foundation. In September 2009, RBC Foundation donated $2 million to Western in support of the Community Service Learning program facilitated through Western, Richard Ivey School of Business and Huron University College. Broschinski was one of 24 students in 2010 who received financial assistance through the RBC gift to allow them to participate in Western s Alternative Spring Break program. I had the opportunity to experience a new culture and take part in building a community, says Broschinski, who travelled to New Orleans to build homes with Habitat for Humanity. Everyone was so willing to learn new skills on the construction site as well as cheer on each other. I am a civil engineering student and plan to focus on environmental engineering and design against natural phenomena. My time in New Orleans was directly applicable to my area of study. After graduation, Broschinski hopes to travel to areas of the world prone to natural disasters and be part of building and infrastructure design to withstand nature s forces. Sylvia Broschinski helps build a Habitat for Humanity home in New Orleans during Western s Alternative Spring Break program in Broschinski grew up on a farm in Princeton, Ontario with her four siblings. At a young age she set her sights on attending university and started working on a nearby farm at the age of 12 to save money for her education. She is grateful the RBC donation allows students, who would otherwise not be able to take part in experiential education, to step outside the classroom and into the world. Service learning is an unforgettable hands-on education and a very effective teacher. The community benefits from Stephanie Hayne, Experiential Education Coordinator in Western s Student Success Centre, says students are looking for ways to make meaning of their academic knowledge in a real world capacity. Community Service Learning allows students to connect classroom learning to community needs. In , the RBC gift also provided 11 students with International Community Service Learning Course Based Bursaries. Hayne notes the impact of RBC s gift will expand in years to come, allowing Western s Community Service Learning program to: Expand across all faculties Establish a Community Partner grant program that will provide funding to community agencies in London who partner on these projects with faculty and students Increase numbers of students engaged inside and outside the classroom Provide assistance for students in financial need who want to participate in international Community Service Learning Hayne adds that Community Service Learning builds a bridge between the University and the community, and can lead to many collaborations, including community-based research. Ontario community. The campaign plan also includes new endowed chairs, translational research projects and extensive support for graduate and undergraduate students. I ve been amazed at the energy, enthusiasm and willingness of our faculty members to take on these challenges and be excited about what lies ahead, says Strong. I know that passion can only spread to our alumni and partners. We are looking at moving our School forward to become a truly researchintensive faculty with global impact. - Dr. Michael Strong Dean of Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry, Fellow of the Royal College of Physician s and Surgeons of Canada For more on recent gifts to Schulich see page 5

4 MULTI-MILLION DOLLAR SOFTWARE SUITE FOR EARTH SCIENCES WESTERN EARTH SCIENCES STUDENTS HAVE ACCESS TO LEADING EDUCATORS AND NOW STATE-OF-THE-ART SOFTWARE THAT WILL GIVE THEM THE SKILLS THEY NEED TO THRIVE WHEN THEY GRADUATE. Thanks to a US$6.2-million donation from Roxar Software Solutions, Western s future resource geoscientists have access to 3-D visualization software that is as much of a breakthrough for geotechnical exploration as MRI is for diagnostic medicine. This will allow students to gain insight into the evolution of the planet as well as the practical application of finding and assessing petroleum and natural gas deposits. Three-dimensional visualization is essential for geologists to properly analyze and describe the spatial distribution of rock attributes such as rock types, thickness, extent, porosity, and so forth, says Burns Cheadle, Bell Chair in Petroleum Geology at Western. With the advent of modern computer workstations and the evolution of software products, it s no longer necessary to make an approximation when extrapolating from point data to three dimensions. Not only is this 3-D visualization capability essential for proper analysis, but it also affords a ready means for communication of interpreted results. Roxar is a leading international technology solutions provider to the upstream oil and gas industry (which is involved in finding, recovery and production of crude oil and natural gas). The Houston-based company provided an entire suite of reservoir modeling software for the Department of Earth Sciences, which will further enhance Western s Resource Geoscience Initiative. The goal of the Initiative is to have the Department of Earth Sciences become the premier institution in Canada for economic and energy resource geology, ensuring Western graduates geologists who have the skills to succeed whether they are in the wilds or in the boardroom. The $41.7-million project within the Department of Earth Sciences will receive $23 million from the University, with the remaining support coming from private donations. Burns Cheadle, Bell Chair in Petroleum Geology at Western, and Rob Chelak, Roxar Inc. Services Manager in the United States, shows off part of the new US$6.2-million suite of reservoir modeling software for the department. Cheadle says the donation came about as the result of a conversation he had with Rob Chelak, Service Manager for Roxar Inc. in the U.S. while they were attending a conference in Calgary earlier this year. The two men had worked together at Imperial Oil in Calgary during the 1980s. I mentioned my desire to assemble a software suite that would allow my students to gain experience using exactly the same tools currently used in the upstream oil and gas industry, says Cheadle. Rob offered an extremely generous donation-in-kind of five concurrent licenses of the complete RMS 2010 reservoir modeling suite. The Roxar donation is one of several software donations made in support of the new Petroleum Geology program during the past year, says Cheadle, all of which underscore the benefit of developing and maintaining relationships between academia and industry. STUDENT AWARDS SUPPORT FUTURE NURSES WESTERN S ARTHUR LABATT FAMILY SCHOOL OF NURSING MARKED 90 YEARS OF EXCELLENCE WITH THE ANNOUNCEMENT OF MORE THAN $1.3 MILLION IN NEW DONATIONS TO SUPPORT STUDENT AWARDS. Rachel Parker, President of the Nursing Students Council, says supporting nursing at Western is supporting the health care system of tomorrow. It is providing and facilitating the opportunity for potential nurses to achieve their education at a university that strives for excellence and focuses on the core values of nursing, such as caring. At the gala celebration celebrating the 90th anniversary of the nursing program in October, the following gifts were announced, all of which will support nursing students who demonstrate financial need. A bequest of $1.2 million from an anonymous alumnus in memory of his partner of 65 years, Audrey Metzler who was a Royal Canadian Army Nurse, will boost the value of three awards he already established for undergraduate nursing students in their first year of the Western- Fanshawe Collaborative nursing program. Students continue to receive the award in each year of the program. This latest gift will increase the value of each of the awards, so they will Western nursing students from the 1950s. Western s Arthur Labatt Family School of Nursing recently celebrated 90 years of nursing education. uwo.ca now cover 50 per cent of the cost of tuition, and will create additional awards as well. As a Western student, the donor received financial support, and by establishing the awards in memory of Audrey, he hoped to return the favour in some way. A bequest of $105,000 from Helen Fasken (BSc 42) will create the Helen Fasken Graduate Nursing Bursaries endowment for masters and doctoral students who are studying long-term care of the elderly. Two awards of $2,100 each will be available annually. Fasken, who passed away in 2009, was chosen by her colleagues as one of twelve nurses considered The Most Caring Nurse in Ontario in The Marion McCracken Nursing 90th Anniversary Bursary Fund is made up of contributions from nursing alumni, proceeds from the 90th gala event, and a $63,000 bequest from Marion McCracken. As an endowment at Foundation Western, this fund will exist in perpetuity and generate about $3,000 annually to support nursing students. McCracken, who graduated from the Nursing program in 1935, passed away earlier this year at the age of 99. Knowing they have support from others who valued the nursing profession, the student recipients of these awards serve to motivate students to strive for excellence, notes Parker. It is validation that the community, and the nurses who have gone before us, value the nurses we are striving to become. Speaking on behalf of our current students, we hope to give back, with all our hearts, in honour of those who have given to Western, so others may receive care. Helen Fasken (BScN 42), once chosen as The Most Caring Nurse in Ontario, left a bequest to Western in support of two graduate nursing sudent awards. An anonymous donor has left $1.2 million to Western which will boost the value of three nursing awards he already established in honour of his long-time partner Audrey Metzler (pictured above).

For more information on Ivey s Campaign for Leadership, visit: CONNECTING JOURNALISM STUDENTS TO THE WORLD Larry Rosen THOMSON REUTERS CONTINUES TO SUPPORT WESTERN S FACULTY OF INFORMATION AND MEDIA STUDIES JOURNALISM PROGRAM WITH ITS MEDIA SERVICES WORTH $390,000 ANNUALLY. The services include Reuters News Graphics Service, the Reuters World Service text newswire, and the World News Service Core video feed. The feed service is an integral part of professional workshops within the journalism program and provides students with a vast amount of international footage to use in their newscasts. Television and International Reporting instructor, Cliff Lonsdale, says these services are invaluable and change the whole experience for the students. It gives them a feel for life in an actual newsroom. They have almost unlimited opportunities to practice crafting international stories for local audiences, using material that s right up to the minute. Live stories change unpredictably and having access to the Reuters television and wire services adds a highly realistic element as we prepare mock newscasts to deadline. Importantly, too, the Reuters services help our students connect with international affairs in a way that s relatively difficult to achieve in this environment, away from Canada s media hubs. LONG AFFILIATION WITH PROGRAM PROMPTS GENEROUS GIFT THE SCHULICH SCHOOL OF MEDICINE & DENTISTRY S VASCULAR SURGERY PROGRAM HAS RECEIVED A $250,000 DONATION FROM WILLIAM BLAIR. Blair ran a very successful medical devices distribution business in Toronto for more than 30 years and it was through this work he became keenly interested in vascular surgery. His affiliation with the program at Western was gained through his relationship with former and current Chiefs of Vasular Surgery - Dr. Ken Harris and Dr. Tom Forbes. In 2000, Blair committed $105,000 to the Vascular Surgery program and says he is so pleased with the advancement in research and education taking place that he decided to make a second investment. WESTERNMAKESADIFFERENCE.CA GRACE AND LILLIAN BAKER MEDICAL RESEARCH FUND SISTERS GRACE AND LILLIAN BAKER WERE BOTH TEACHERS WHO SHARED A LIFELONG PASSION FOR EDUCATION. CAMPAIGN PROGRESS 2010/2011 AS OF OCTOBER 31, 2010 Through their estate gift to Foundation Western, the Grace and Lillian Baker Medical Research Fund has been established in the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry. This unrestricted endowed fund will generate approximately $40,000 a year in perpetuity to support medical research, at the Dean s discretion. Kathy Coleman, second cousin to the sisters, whose grandfather was the brother of Grace and Lillian s mother, says she remembers the sisters as loving and gentle women, who both had a thirst for knowledge and a keen interest in reading, nature and politics. Neither sister married or had children. They saw their young relatives and students as their children. Their modest lifestyle allowed them to contribute to several organizations over the years, including Western. Lillian passed away in 1999 at 88, while Grace continued to live in their London home until shortly before her death in 2008, at 91. Grace Baker Lillian Baker Grace and Lillian did not share why they decided to give to medical research. The family surmises it was because the sisters suffered the loss of their father at an early age, and mourned the death of a young brother, and wanted to keep others from this experience. They also might have thought because dentistry was a part of the school, they were honouring their two uncles who were dentists. Higher education is revered in our family, so Grace and Lillian s support of Western is extremely appropriate, Coleman says. They both believed that supporting the younger generation was vital to improving society.

10 WESTERN THANKS YOU THANK YOU TO OUR NEWEST DONORS For me, the holiday season is a time to reflect. As I look back on 2010, it is clear Western s reputation continues to grow both nationally and internationally. The recruitment from Cambridge University of renowned brain researcher Adrian Owen; Western s number one ranking in The Globe & Mail for the ninth year in a row; and research discoveries that captured global attention in areas as diverse as medicine, astronomy and engineering are a few examples of the outstanding work being done at the University. These achievements, and so many more, would not be possible without the support of our generous donors who understand how their contributions can help Western change the world. While the majority of Western supporters call Canada home, we have growing, significant, international connections as well. This year, Western received support from donors based in 24 different countries, including Anguilla, India, Switzerland, Trinidad and Tobago, Italy, Australia and China. To our newest 1878 Societies members, and to our current members, I wish to thank you and recognize your generous support. Whether from Canada, or around the world, each and every gift supports those who call Western home, by giving them the means to make an impact on society. On behalf of the entire University community, warmest wishes to you this holiday season and in the New Year ahead. Sincerely, We would like to recognize the following individuals for their gifts of $25,000 or more and corporations, foundations and organizations for their gifts of $100,000 or more to Western between April 15 October 31, We also wish to thank those donors who have chosen to remain anonymous. This list reflects those gifts made during the time frame specified above; please note that it does not reflect cumulative giving to Western. Individual donors who have given $25,000 or more cumulatively and organizations that have given $100,000 or more cumulatively are recognized in The 1878 Societies. In addition, those individuals who have made a commitment to Western s future through their wills, life insurance policies and gifts of residual interest are recognized in the Helen M.B. Allison Legacies Society.
