2 VanAernam named Christensen Elite Winner In 1979, Gale VanAernam purchased his first Simmental heifer, a moved instigated by eldest son, Jon s 4-H project. Little did the family know that that purchase would be the foundation of one of the premier Simmental herds in the state of Iowa. VanAernam Simmental Farm, nine miles east of Exira, is run by Gale and Colleen VanAernam, along with their youngest son, Andy. The farm consists of 180 head of purebred and registered Simmental cows, along with some replacement heifers. VSF uses artificial insemination on all of their heifers and roughly 75% of their cows and do embryo transplant on about 25 of their cows each year. Roughly half of the herd is kept as replacement heifers, bulls are held back and sold, and the remainder are sold as feeder calves in the fall, through local sale barns. VanAernam Simmental Farms market their breeding stock through a variety of sales and groups. They are a member of the Southwest Simmental Group and North Central Simmental Group, and were a founding member of the Iowa Beef Connection. VSF genetics have been sold to producers across the country, as far away as New York and Florida; semen is also collected and Gale VanAernam, pictured above with son, Andy, was named by Naomi Christensen as the recipient of the 2018 Christensen Elite Award during the Iowa Simmental Association s annual banquet held on February 11, sold by the straw from a number of nationally known bulls including: Conspiracy, Advance, TNT Ever Ready, Static and Game Plan, all owned by VanAernam Simmental Farm. In addition to focusing on growing their herd and advancing the genetics of the Simmental Breed, VSF ISA Annual Meeting Held The annual meeting of the Iowa Simmental Association met in conjunction with the Iowa Beef Expo on February 10, President Tom Robinson called the meeting to order at 4:00 PM. Directors in attendance were: Tom Robinson, Nate Ruby, Dustin Ford, Jeff Thompson, Al Johnson, Nate Horman, Denny Cason, Aaron Siek and Sherrie Moore. Also in attendance was Bert Moore, ASA Field representative, and several Iowa members. Absent was Jay Steenhoek. Secretary s report was read. It was moved by Dustin Ford and seconded by Al Johnson to accept the minutes. Motion carried. Treasurer s report was read. It was moved by Nate Horman and seconded by Denny Cason to accept the report. Motion carried. Banquet and Beef Expo Sale details were discussed for the upcoming weekend. Junior Update: President Kiersten Jass; Vice-President Sammi Long; Secretary Grace Greiman. There will be 20 great items up to be auctioned at the banquet for the Junior fundraiser. Expo Junior Show 178 head entered from 154 junior exhibitors. 2 Junior Field Day will be June 2-3, 2018 at the Hansen Ag Center at Iowa State University in Ames. The juniors are offering an online pre-entry option this year. Junior Regionals and Nationals: The North Central Regional will be held in Springfield, IL June 12-16, 2018 and AJSA Junior National Classic is being held in St. Paul, MN July 2-7, Directory/Newsletter: Morgan Wadsworth has retired from doing the newsletter. She has done an excellent job and we thank her for her time and years of service to get the news out to the membership! Mary Lynch has agreed to take over the newsletter responsibilities along with the directory. Discussion opened up to membership on thoughts of going to an online newsletter. The ICA has also expressed interest in having our newsletter tied into their publication. Members expressed opinions on working with other publications saying it had been tried in the past and hadn t worked. It is costly to put the newsletter out and the board is looking at options to help cut costs. It was suggested to go entirely online and offer the option for the printed version to be requested by members if that is what they prefer. ASA Field Rep Bert Moore: Bert spoke briefly on 2018 being the 50th Anniversary of the American Simmental Association with the theme of Embrace the Past Imagine the Future. There are several new programs being implemented! Other: David Haines explained about the educational fund and how it works. It is a separate entity from the ISA board and has its own board of directors to administer it. This is monies left over from hosting junior nationals. David is the current president and the funds are to be used to benefit and enhance the junior program. Requests can be made to them and they will decide what to do. Board Election: Board members who have served 2 terms and going off are Al Johnson, Nate Horman and Jay Steenhoek. Thank you for your years of service. On the nomination ballot are Kenny Scott, Brandon Reck and Dr. Al VanEngen. Dennis Larson moved that nominations cease and accept the unanimous ballot. The motion was seconded by Dustin Ford. Motion carried. Moved by Al Johnson and seconded by Jeff Thompson to adjourn meeting. The board met briefly after the annual meeting and elected the following positions: President Dustin Ford, and Vice-President Jeff Thompson. *Submitted by Sherrie Moore continues to be active in exhibiting beef cattle, which is what founded the operation in the first place. Gale and his wife, Colleen, were both 4-H leaders and Gale volunteered extensively with the Audubon County Fair, serving as Livestock Superintendent for a number of years. He was inducted into the State of Iowa 4-H Hall of Fame in The three VanAernam children, Jon, Jill, and Andy were all active in 4-H and FFA. Grandchildren Drew, Jaci and Clayton also have actively exhibited cattle through 4-H, FFA and open shows and when the youngest Ellie is old enough, there s no doubt, she too will carry on that family tradition. Through the breeding operation and exhibiting, the VanAernams have always found it important to promote the Simmental breed and the beef industry in general. The family has been active in the Iowa Simmental Association. Gale was elected to the ISA Board of Directors in 2004 and served as President in 2009, before retiring after two terms. He is currently on the Iowa Beef Breeds Council, where he holds the office of Vice President and will soon assume the role of President. Gale has been a member of the Iowa Cattlemen s Association, Audubon County Cattlemen, American Simmental Association and T-Bone Association for more than 30 years. He is also active with the Audubon County Farm Bureau and Exira Lutheran Church. With the success and growth the VanAernams have seen since that first purchase, back when Simmentals were yellow and white, Gale has always said that the people have been the best part of the cattle operation. We ve gotten the most enjoyment out of the many people we ve met and the many friendships we ve made with quality cattlemen across the country, said Gale. The VanAernam family includes Gale and Colleen; Jon and Jeana; Dan, Jill, Drew and Jaci; Andy, Ashley, Clayton and Elizabeth. The entire family lives in Audubon County. *Submitted by Jill Christensen Below, Gale VanAernam and Naomi Christensen.

Hello Simmental Enthusiasts, Well, another Iowa Beef Expo has come and gone and I want to take a moment to thank all who helped to make our 2018 IA Simmental Banquet and our 48th Mark of Genetic Excellence Sale a true success. What we all have much to feel proud of as Simmental breeders is the fact that even in different economic conditions in the cattle market, Simmental genetics have once again remained in high demand to breeders across the country. We sold an incredible 115 lots with an average of $3420. In terms of numbers, Angus had the 2nd highest total lots sold at 84 with an average of $3,667. In the Jr. Show, Simmental exhibitors showed up in force with easily the most numbers represented for any breed and the quality indicative of what Iowa Simmental breeders are known for. It is going to be a fun year for many of our junior exhibitors. As you know, this year the Sr. Board decided to try some8 thing new by holding the ban- quet at the Iowa State Fairgrounds in an effort to make attendance more convenient for those consigning cattle and attending the sale. We are always open to feedback and opinions so please feel free to offer up suggestions for improvement on both the sale and the banquet to our board members. A special thank you to Tom and Laura Robinson for all of your effort in organizing the banquet details as a tremendous amount of effort went into this new venue. Most of you know Tom passed on the gavel as President this year and I would like to thank Tom for the past few years of his leadership for the Sr. Board and the IA Simmental Association membership. Although the ICA Bull Test sales are not fully completed, the Simmental breed has been well represented this spring in these sales with top tier on test performance, scan data and EPD s that once again demonstrate to commercial producers the value of Sim Genetics. We want to hear from you so please let us know how we as a board can better serve our membership in the promotion of the Simmental breed. Best Regards, Dustin Wadsworth is Junior Supporter of the Year The 2017 Iowa Junior Supporter of the Year was awarded to M o r g a n Wadsworth at the Iowa Beef Expo banquet. Morgan has been a junior a d v is e r for many years and spends countless hours coordinating activities for our junior kids. She always has IJSA and its members at the core of Morgan Wadsworth decisions that she makes to help move the organization forward. Her dedication to the organization is very appreciated and shouldn t go unnoticed. Congratulations on an honor well deserved. *Submitted by Regina Long
