2 Important Days World Day Against Cyber Censorship The World Day Against Cyber Censorship (WDACC) is an online event held every year on March 12 to rally support for a single, unrestricted Internet that is accessible to all and to draw attention to the ways that governments around the world are deterring and censoring free speech online. This day was first observed on 12 March 2008 at the request of Reporters without Borders and Amnesty International. 2

3 World News India, China important engines of regional and global economic growth A top official of International Monetary Fund said India and China have been important engines of regional and global economic growth. In 2017, India and China were responsible for almost half of global growth. A strong economic partnership between India and China would be beneficial, and their collaboration is welcome. India, France Ink 14 Pacts; Major Boost to Defence, Nuclear Energy Cooperation In a major expansion of strategic ties, India and France have inked 14 pacts in key areas of defense, security, nuclear energy and protection of classified information besides resolving to deepen cooperation in the Indo-Pacific region and step up joint efforts to contain terrorism. The agreements were signed after extensive talks between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and French President Emmanuel Macron, including on the changing security dynamics in the Indian Ocean and Pacific. India, France pledge to build world's largest nuclear plant PM Narendra Modi and French President Emmanuel Macron on Monday pledged to begin work on "the largest nuclear power plant in the world" in India by this year. Urging Electricite de France SA and India's Nuclear Power Corporation to accelerate discussions on a contract and start work at Maharashtra's Jaitapur, the leaders said the plant would have a 9.6-gigawatt capacity. India placed 33rd worldwide in web-borne threats: Kaspersky As per cybersecurity and anti-virus provider, Kaspersky Labs, India ranks 33rd worldwide on the list of countries facing web-borne threats. This revelation was done by Kaspersky Lab at the recent Chief Information Security Officer (CISO) Summit in Mumbai, through a presentation on the threat management and defense landscape in India. CISO added thati ndia secured 37th place worldwide in attacks by local threats and 13th in incidents with malicious hosts located within the country. 3

4 As per the data, 27.4 percent Indian users were affected by web-borne threats, while 62.7 percent users were attacked by local threats. US planned to give gun training to Teachers, school staff The US government has announced it will pay states for rigorous firearms training for teachers and other school staff to harden schools against mass shooting attacks. Homeland security officials will also develop a public awareness campaign to encourage people to report potential signs of terrorism. This comes a month after Florida school shooting which killed 17 people. 4

5 National News Fugitive Economic Offenders Bill And Chit Funds (Amendment) Bill Introduced In Lok Sabha: The Fugitive Economic Offenders Bill 2018 has been introduced in the Lok Sabha. The Bill will help in laying down measures to deter economic offenders from evading the process of law by remaining outside the jurisdiction of Indian courts. The cases where the total value involved in such offenses is Rs. 100 crore or more, will come under the purview of the Bill. Minister of State for Finance, Shiv Pratap Shukla introduced the Bill. The Minister also introduced the Chit Funds (Amendment) Bill The amendment is aimed at facilitating the orderly growth of the chit funds sector and remove bottlenecks being faced by the industry and enabling greater financial access of people to other financial products. I- Metros -An Association of All Indian Metro Rail Companies Launched By Cabinet Secretary: The Union Housing Ministry has launched I-Metros, an association of all-india metro rail companies, which will act as a forum of exchange of ideas and innovations. The association was launched by Cabinet Secretary P.K. Sinha at an event Indian Metros: Collaborating for Excellence in the presence of Delhi Metro Rail Corporation Managing Director Mangu Singh in New Delhi. India commits $1.4 billion for solar energy worldwide India announced one of the world s largest investment plans in solar energy at the Founding Conference of the International Solar Alliance (ISA). The $1.4 billion line of credit will cover 27 projects in 15 countries and boost the muchrequired financial power to the solar sector. India will provide assistance to 15 countries for $1.4 billion. 5

6 State News Macron to inaugurate UP s largest solar plant in Mirzapur French President Emmanuel Macron will inaugurate Uttar Pradesh s largest solar power plant, at Dadar Kala village in Mirzapur district, during his proposed visit on March 12. Tushar Malik, construction head of the company, said the solar power plant at Dadar Kala village is all set to generate 75 megawatt alternating current (AC) and 101 megawatt direct current (DC). Banlotwa first alcohol-free village in Ranchi district Banlotwa has become the first alcohol-free village in Ranchi district and Jharkhand Chief Minister Raghuvar Das has lauded the residents for achieving this feat, a district official said. The chief minister also gave Rs 1 lakh cash to the village head of Banlotwa, following his announcement two years ago that any village becoming alcohol-free would be given the money for its development. The people of Banlotwa have joined hands to make the village nasa mukt (alcohol-free). Even the state government is working with such an aim and willpower. Floating Lab Set Up To Monitor Manipur's Loktak Lake The Institute of Bioresources and Sustainable Laboratory (IBSD), Imphal, set up a floating laboratory in northeast India's largest freshwater lake, Loktak to constantly monitor its water quality and eventually improve it. The laboratory was inaugurated by Manipur's Forest and Environment Minister, Thounaojam Shyamkumar Singh in Imphal. 6

7 Banking & Economy DCB Bank launches online service to send money globally DCB Bank has launched 'DCB Remit', a remittance service to enable customers to send mone online globally. Using DCB Remit, any resident Indian can register online and send money to 20 countries such as the US, Canada, Australia, the UK, the UAE and Germany. Once the exchange rate of money is fixed, customer can transfer money from any account to DCB Bank account. This in turn can be transferred to the beneficiary account present in another country on or within the next business day. DCB Remit has been introduced in collaboration with Avenues Payments Avenues Payments specialises in providing cross border payments. Indian Renewable Energy Development Agency (IREDA) inks loan agreement with EIB for renewable energy The Indian Renewable Energy Development Agency (IREDA) and European Investment Bank (EIB) have inked a 150 million euros loan agreement. It will benefit over 1.1 million households with clean energy. The line of credit is for tenure of 15 years, including a grace period of three years. The agreement was signed by IREDA Chairman and MD K S Popli and W Hoyer, President of EIB. 7

9 Appointments & Resignations Anjani kumar appointed as Commissioner of police, Hyderabad Anjani Kumar, who was holding the post of Additional DGP (Law & Order), has been posted as Hyderabad City Police Commissioner, elieving VV Srinivasa Rao, IPS from the full additional charge. Anjani Kumar is an IPS officer of 1990 batch. He has been appointed the new Commissioner of Police, Hyderabad, as part of a major reshuffle of senior police officers in Telangana. Kumar was the Additional DGP (Law & Order). The post of Hyderabad Police Commissioner was vacant for the past 4 months. Parag Agrawal appointed as Twitter s Chief Technology Officer (CTO) Twitter has appointed Parag Agrawal as its chief technology officer. Agrawal, an alumnus of IIT-Bombay and a PhD in Computer Science from Stanford University, succeeds Adam Messinger. His contributions at Twitter include leading efforts to increase the relevance of tweets in Twitter users timelines using Artificial Intelligence. Suresh Bhaiyyaji Joshi re-elected as general secretary of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) Suresh Bhaiyyaji Joshi has been re-elected as general secretary of RSS for a 4th term. 10 Science & Technology Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) aims to launch Chandrayaan-2 by April The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) said it is aiming for an April launch of the Chandrayaan-2 satellite. If the April launch of the Chandrayaan-2, the country s second mission to the moon, is not possible, then the Isro will aim for a launch by October. The Chandrayaan-2 satellite would comprise an orbiter, lander and six-wheeled rover which would move around the landing site. Sivan said scientists were also gearing up for the launch of communication satellite GSAT- 6 on-board GSLV-F08, scheduled later this month. 10

11 Obituaries Legendary British comedian Ken Dodd passes away at 90 British comedian Ken Dodd, whose seven-decade career stretched from the music-hall era to the age of social media, has died at the age of 90. The comedian, famous for his stand-up shows, as well as his Diddy Men and tickling stick, died at the home where he was born in the Liverpool suburb of Knotty Ash. 11
