1 ` Next Meeting - Tuesday, February 22nd, 2011 Luncheon 11:15am 1:00pm CLICK HERE TO REGISTER ONLINE FOR THIS MONTH S LUNCHEON Olin Ragsdale to Receive 2011 Career Service Award Olin Ragsdale, CLU, AEP, BCE, LUTCF, will receive this year s NAIFA-Fort Worth Career Service Award at the February 22 nd luncheon at Ridglea Country Club. He is being honored for his service to the financial services industry and to his community. Olin Ragsdale hails from the Rising Star of the Metroplex, Roanoke, Texas, where his family is listed among the original settlers. He lived in Roanoke until he was drafted and served two years in the U.S. Army. When he returned, he married his high school sweetheart, Barbara Baltzelle, and they had two daughters Ami, who passed away at the age of 17, and Shelli, who is an attorney specializing in Estate Planning. Soon after his marriage, Olin entered the insurance business and achieved early success by qualifying for the Million Dollar Roundtable and for other industry awards. He began his career by cold calling on lawyers and developing his career in estate planning. He credits his success in this market to the good training he received at Mass Mutual and, in particular, the assistance he received from the general agent, Cary Parks, CLU. Olin has a great love of learning, as represented by his many designations. He received the CLU designation in 2003, the AEP (Accredited Estate Planner) designation from the National Association of Estate Planners and, most recently, the BCE (Board Certified in Estate Planning) designation from the Institute of Business and Finance. Less than 1% of estate planners hold this prestigious designation. Olin has given service to the industry as Community Service Chair and by moderating classes in the Foundations of Estate Planning in the LUTC Curriculum. Currently, he is the president-elect of the Tarrant County Chapter of the Society of Financial Service Professionals. As program chairman of this organization, he is proud to announce a special program sponsored by the Society and the Tarrant County Bar Association entitled, Back to the Future: Estate Tax Avoidance Planning, to be held on February 16 th. Olin s community service work is just as extensive as his service to the industry. When asked of what he was most proud, he replied that his work with Big Brothers was outstanding. He brought the alliance with Big Brothers to FWALU (NAIFA-Fort Worth) when he was 25 years old. Ten years later, he was honored for his ten years of service as a Big Brother. Olin also served on the board of directors for Big Brothers for 5 years, and was the director of the Fort Worth Soap Box Derby. In addition, he has served as a coach in many YMCA programs, and has taught Sunday school and served as an assistant youth director in his church for twenty years. Olin also helped with karate instruction for YES (Youth Enrichment Skills), a program founded by Richard Morris to encourage gang members to take their lives in a new direction. Olin is well known for his mentoring spirit, whether it be a young child in need of guidance or a young agent in need of assistance. Olin Ragsdale is a family man who brags about continuing to take his beautiful wife, Barbara, on dates, and who bursts with pride in his daughter, Shelli, her husband, Ben Harveson, and his two grandchildren, Eden and Henry. Olin is an Investment Advisor Representative with Signal Securities, Inc.

3 CLTC taught me how to take a product that my client didn t think he needed and turn it into a something he couldn t live without! The CLTC course will literally change every aspect of how you position long-term care insurance. Here s how: The Certified in Long - Term Care (CLTC) Master Class is coming to Texas! February 7 & 8, 2011 Northwestern Mutual 1300 Summit Ave; Suite 200 Fort Worth, TX Hours Day 1: 8:30am - 6pm & Day 2: 8:30am - 5pm Attire is business casual Instructor - Harley Gordon Tuition*$1165 (Retail price $1365) Advanced Early Registration Discount Reserve your seat by December 15 and delay your payments until January 2011 Pay $ pay tuition financing No additional charge Earn CE Credits CFP credits also available CLTC designation Awarded after passing exam It s not risk it s consequences: Instead of using the risk of needing care to motivate your client to buy LTCi, you learn how to use the consequences to his family s emotional, physical and financial wellbeing, if he did. It s not product it s planning: Rather than focus on how to sell LTCi, you are given the tools to create a plan that will allow him to remain in the community, while protecting his family. It s not asset protection it s income protection: You discover that LTCi doesn t protect assets - it protects retirement income by funding a plan for care. No more objections just agreement: Learn to eliminate objections to planning such as, I ll never need care ; I won t live a long life ; or I ve been told by my lawyer, CPA or fi nancial advisor that I can self-insure. I was never comfortable discussing LTC insurance before taking the CLTC course. Now it s exactly like selling life and disability income products - even annuities. 5 The CLTC Board of Standards The CLTC Pledge All graduates of the Certified in Long-Term Care (CLTC) program are required by the independent CLTC Board of Standards, Inc. (Board) to renew their designation yearly, at which time they must show that they have maintained a minimum standard of competence. It is based on the principal that graduates can continue to serve their clients with the highest degree of professionalism only if kept informed on advances in planning techniques and changes in both the long-term care insurance market and regulatory bodies. The Board has determined that this essential information is not currently available through continuing education programs. After a thorough review of the content available on the CLTC Graduate web site (Site) the Board has determined that, it provides the tools to meet the minimum standards to maintain competency. The products, services and information available on the website are supported only through renewal fees. The Board has determined that accepting funding from the insurance industry or referral fees from vendors would compromise the integrity of the CLTC designation. The payment of an annual renewal fee demonstrates a commitment to continuing education by giving you access to the material necessary to meet the minimum standard of competence called for. Graduates who do not pay said fee have made a decision not to remain engaged in the profession at the level required by the Board and therefore will be considered to have voluntarily relinquished their CLTC designation. The individual will be removed from our list of graduates, denied access to the Graduate web site and if appropriate, notice of the same will be forwarded to that person s company. To avoid any future misunderstanding, designees are required to sign and return the following Pledge; otherwise, their renewal remittance will not be processed: 1. I understand that acquiring the CLTC designation is the first step in a commitment to the profession of long - term care planning. 2. I understand that to serve my clients with the highest degree of professionalism I must stay informed on advances in planning techniques and changes in both the long-term care insurance market and regulatory bodies. 3. I understand that the CLTC Board of Standards has set minimum educational criteria for renewing the designation. I further understand that the materials and services that allow me to meet those criteria are contained in the CLTC Graduate web site. Failure to renew access to required CLTC education will act as a voluntary relinquishment of the CLTC designation. 4. I understand that I am required by the CLTC Board of Standards, Inc. to successfully complete a CLTC Ethics course every two years in order to continue holding the CLTC Designation. 5. I hereby agree to abide to the terms of the CLTC Code of Professional Responsibility, including continued learning. CLTC Renewal Policy: Beginning one year after the date you pass the exam, one of the following plans is required: Annual Plan: $ by check, credit card or money order Lifetime Membership: $ by check, credit card or money order Please Print: Last Name First Name Date Course reference # (if applicable) Signature Fax this completed form to (617) or you may mail it to: CLTCC 188 Needham Street, Suite 230 Newton, MA /10/10

6 Power of Mentoring Whatever success has been bestowed upon me thus far in my life has been the result of the kindness and dedication of mentors, MDRT past President Philip E. Harriman, CLU, ChFC, told Main Platform attendees. Revealing how the mentors in his life helped him overcome the family turmoil that marked his early years, Harriman, a 28-year MDRT member from Falmouth, Maine, recalled an idyllic early childhood. However, that gave way to tumultuous teenage years, when the cruelty of his classmates revealed that his parents were different. Harriman said his father was physically disabled as a result of multiple surgeries stemming from childhood health issues, and his mother suffered from mental illness that led to involuntary hospitalizations. By the time I was 13, my parents had become more and more abusive to one another, he recalled. I still vividly remember having to step in between them to keep the peace. A bitter divorce ensued. After the divorce, my younger brother was sent away to a special education school, and I was thrust into caring as best I could for my mentally disabled mother. The trauma Harriman endured during his formative years took a toll. Adrift at age 15, he fell in with a troubled crowd and lacked positive direction in his life. Yet, Harriman said, there were special people in his life who chose to look beyond the dysfunction of his family, and instead focused on his potential. Through these mentors, Harriman explained, he was able to move forward despite the disappointments of his upbringing. One of his first mentors, a middle school teacher, challenged Harriman to develop his athletic abilities through discipline, commitment, focus and goal setting. By his senior year in high school, Harriman was serving as co-captain of the basketball team and earned a partial scholarship to play college basketball. In college, Harriman said, a professor took the time to introduce him to the field of insurance. Thanks to him, I discovered the miracle of how insurance works and what it does for families, businesses and communities around the world, he said. Once he earned MDRT membership, Harriman said, his fellow members showed him how volunteering would allow him to fully experience the benefits of the Round Table. That was the best advice, he said. It is right here, at MDRT, where I discovered my leadership skills, and serving as your President has been the highest honor of my career. Harriman said many other mentors, including his wife, Christie, and one of his longtime clients, have inspired him to want to be better. Would you agree that you got here to this place of excellence because someone cared enough about you to become your mentor? he asked. Harriman said mentoring is the heart and soul of MDRT, and he encouraged attendees to carry on the tradition. Become a mentor beginning right now, Harriman urged. Take time to reach down, reach back and lend a hand to someone trying to make it in this profession. It s good tonic for your soul, and your advice will bear fruit long after your days are gone. Philip E. Harriman, CLU, ChFC served as 2007 MDRT President and is a 28-year member of the Round Table with four Court of the Table and 11 Top of the Table qualifications. His entire 2010 Annual Meeting presentation is available for purchase at Million Dollar Round Table Phone: Fax: Website:
