3 BARKMAN'S DONATE MEMERIBILIA TO BERLIN HISTORICAL SOCIETY! Hubert "Butch" and Nancy (Athey) Barkman visited with us on July 11 and donated valuable memorabilia. The couple sold their Stonycreek Township residence and held public auction before down-sizing into apartment life. Butch is pictured displaying a badge belonging to the former Stonycreek Grange #1798 to which his parents were members. Nancy displays a Berlin Brothersvalley High School letter and a B.BJ. H.S banner. During the couple's visit, Gary Estnick (a classmate of Nancy's at Berlin Brothersvalley High School) took the couple into the basement display area to show them our nice collection of Surge Dairy Equipment - the majority of which originated from the long-time Surge dealership of Nancy's father, the late Walter Athey of Brothersvalley Township.

4 ROSS BOWSER'S POLICEMAN'S NIGHTSTICK (BILLY CLUB) DONATED Donnie and Denise Walters of Flagstaff, Arizona donated Donnie's grandfather Ross Bowser's policeman's nightstick or billy club during their visit on July 7. They also donated a photo of Ross that also appears in this month's curator's report. Daniel Brenneman of Springs (son of Mark Brenneman of Mark's Hardness Shop) handcrafted and donated a new strap for the billy club since the original one was brittle with the leather being too weak for making major repairs. - INSTRUCTING NEW INVENTORY PERSONNEL Stew I" _ Sue Walker and Barbara Elliott on inventory procedures!

5 FOR THE RECORD Emily Grace (Maust) Fritz, aged 98, was recognized by the Hillcrest Grange in July for 65 years ofcontinuous membership in the organization. Emily is displaying her "Golden Sheaf Certificate" after adding her 65-year seal. The above photo of Ross Bowser, former Berlin policeman, and his nightstick have been donated by Donnie and Denise Walters. INTERESTING INFORMATION: On July 17, 1955, Disneyland had its opening day in Anaheim, California! On July 17, Woolworth Corporation announced it was closing its 400 remaining five-and-dime stores across the country, ending 117 years in business. On July 16, 1935, the first parking meters were installed in the United States in Oklahoma City.

6 DONATIONS FROM THE LATE ANNE M. (DICKEy) HYNICKA Elizabeth (Tressler) Dickey of Belfast Farm in Brothersvalley Township. The items donated are given in memory of R. Earl and Elizabeth Dickey and include the pictured blanket chest that Steve believes may have been built by his Grandpa R. Earl Dickey and was in his grandparents' home before it was given to his mother. Other donations Anne wanted presented to the BAHS in memory of her parents include a small blue oil lamp, a large oil lamp, a red, yellow and white flowered quilt, a glass basket, a large woven basket and a Shirley Temple Doll. STEVEN F. HYNICKA DISPLAYS HIS MOTHER'S BLANKET CHEST o n July 30, Steven F. Hynicka of Mountville delivered valuable donations from the estate of his mother, Anne M. (Dickey) Hynicka to the Berlin Area Historical Society, where she was a long-time member. Anne was a daughter of the late R. Earl and DONATIONS IN MEMORY OF RUTH ELEANOR (DICKEY) AZNEER Three items donated by the late Anne M. Hynicka in memory of her sister, Ruth Eleanor (Dickey) Azneer include a glass brandy decanter, a glass swan, and a glass bear. Anne M. Dickey was married to the late Richard H. Hynicka while Ruth Eleanor was married to the late Charles D. Azneer. Their siblings included the late Rev. Robert E. Dickey, who married Betty Inbody, and the late Miriam (Dickey) Pierce, who was married to William S. Pierce.

7 SHIRLEY TEMPLE DOLL PRESENTED BY THE LATE ANNE M. (DICKEY) HYNICKA The above pictured Shirley Temple doll in its original box was prized by Anne M. (Dickey) Hynicka, who collected Shirley Temple memorabilia. It was Anne's wish that this doll be donated to BAHS in memory of her parents, R. Earl and Elizabeth (Tressler) Dickey. Anne passed away on June 15, 2018 at the age of 93 years while a resident of the Mennonite Home Retirement Community. A memorial in Anne's memory for $25.00 was presented to Berlin Area Historical Society's endowment fund by Barbara Tennant. ON THIS DATE: July 30, President Lyndon B. Johnson signed a measure creating Medicare, which began operating the following year!

8 PICTURE USED TO ADVERTISE BAHS PICNIC AT UNITY UNITED CHURCH OF CHRIST IN STONYCREEK TOWNSHIP! This special photo was used to advertise in the newspapers our annual summer picnic on July 19, 2018 at Unity United Church of Christ in Stonycreek Township. Gathered around Bob Schmucker's 1957 Chevy Bel Air auto are Megan Evans, Donna and Bob Schmucker, all residents of Stonycreek Township. DONATIONS: Tacy and Luther Weaver donated a large collection of school and church books. Carolyn Custer donated a 2018 BBHS commencement program and other memorabilia. Betty Chaney donated a Rand McNally Atlas that was given away - imprinted with the advertising of Lafferty Chevrolet and also Philson Bank advertising. Mandy Cooper provided identifications for the 2018 Berlin High School graduation picture. Our thanks to the volunteers who were in the Heritage Haus and the Genealogy Building, both which were open to the public during Berlin's Community Dayan July 14,2018. On July 30, 1956 President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed a measure making "In God We Trust" the national motto, replacing "E Pluribus Unum" (Out of many, one).

10 ANNUAL DINNER MEETING LETTERS MAILED July 18, 2018 was a day of great enjoyment and relief as our annual dinner meeting invitations - including payment notices for the turkey dinner, payment notices for dues and the raffle tickets - were mailed out to more than 725 persons at the Berlin Post Office. Pictured here is Berlin Post Office Officer in Charge Sam Barnett with BAHS volunteer Richard L. Berkley. Many volunteers worked to create, make copies and fold the letters, create the wording for the raffle tickets and count them out in quantities of 15, and insert the letters and tickets into envelopes that needed to be personally labeled. A lot of work! Afterward the receipts are all being recorded. The quilt to be given away is being displayed at two of the Berlin banks. Thanks to all the above volunteers and the many others who keep the wheels turning at BAHS. We appreciate our volunteers! David R. Hay, Curator On July 30, 1942 President Franklin D. Ford became the first U.S. President to visit the site of the Nazi concentration camp Auschwitz in Poland.
