4 Historical Note Created in 1993 with the establishment of the Reynolda House Museum of American Art Archives, the Historic Photograph Collection was created from photographs, portraits, and scrapbooks from various sources with or without accession information. The bulk of the collection was once part of the Reynolds Family Papers, , and were separated into a distinct collection at some point in the papers history. Added to those photographs are items that were discovered in various storage locations at Reynolda House during the renovations in The remainder of the collection were received as gifts from various sources. Most photographers for the items are unknown. However, some photographs were taken by Thomas Sears, the Philadelphia-based landscape architect responsible for the the final version of the landscape and formal gardens at Reynolda, and Mary Reynolds Babcock, oldest daughter of R.J. and Katharine Reynolds. With nearly 4500 items, the collection consists of photographs, portraits, postcards, negatives, photo albums and scrapbooks from various sources connected to the Reynolds or Babcock families. Images related to the Reynolda Estate illustrate its creation and evolution over the past century. Each aspect of the estate--reynolda House, Reynolda Farm, Reynolda Village, and Reynolda Gardens--is documented from the years of construction and development, , to the years of Katharine Smith Reynolds residency, , and finally through the Babcock era until the transition into an American art museum, Members of the Reynolds and Babcock families are prevalent in the collection, specifically: R.J. Reynolds, Katharine Smith Reynolds, Dick Reynolds, Nancy Susan Reynolds, Smith Reynolds, and Mary Reynolds Babcock, her husband, Charles Babcock, and their children. Arrangement Photographs are grouped according to their various sources or accessions. When possible, photographs have been kept in the original order in which they were received in a collection or scrapbook. Each photograph has been given a unique identification number. - Page 4 -

7 Collection Inventory Drawer Reynolds Family and Reynolda, Removed from the Reynolds Family Papers, these photographs document the construction and early years of Reynolda, , and the Reynolds Family. Images include those of the farm, dairy, Lake Katharine, Reynolda House and its interiors, Reynolda Village, the outdoor pool, and the indoor pool. Significant events photographed include the Hiawatha pageant held at Lake Katharine in 1921, the Reynolds family camping on the grounds while the estate was being constructed, and aerial photographs of the estate and surrounding area taken by the Aero Service in Box Reynolds Family Photograph Albums, Three photo albums, dated , belonged to Mary Reynolds and include images of Reynolda and the Reynolds children and friends at various locations on the estate, away at camp, and while traveling. Another photo album, dated 1942, documents the opening and dedication of Smith Reynolds Airport in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Artificial Collection, This artificial collection contains items donated from various sources including the Sears, Drage, Conrad, Sigmon, Disher, and Fulcher families. 8 are photographs and prints donated by families of people who were once residents or employees on the estate. Pictured among the collection are many estate workers and buildings in Reynolda Village. Significantly, this collection includes copy prints donated by Gigi Parent that were gathered for the Spirit of Reynolda exhibit in 1993 that documented the African American workers on the estate. That grouping of photographs is the only visual representation of Five Row, the African American community for Reynolda workers, that still exists. Other items include photographs of Reynolda House, Lake Katharine, and Reynolda Gardens taken by Thomas Series and aerial photographs of Reynolda taken in Reynolds Family and Reynolda Village, Images include the Reynolda Polo Team taken in 1923 and various shots of Reynolda Village.
