See or drop them off in the box at Rancher s Market. Chili Cook Off Historical Society Individual Highlights: Club Events 2 Community Events 2 National Events 4 Committee Updates 5 On December 18, 2011 at 4 p.m. Steve and Stephanie Fredericks hosted our annual club Christmas party potluck. Their home is gorgeous, warm and inviting. Spectacularly decorated I might add. Steve & Stephanie Fredericks We are all so blessed. Hope you all enjoyed your Christmas and have a very Happy New Year may it be filled with joy, happiness and good health... SEE YOU NEXT YEAR! Thank you again to the Frederick's for hosting our gathering - everything was beautiful. Blessings, Ray and Jan Bev Brownfield honoring Barbara Grosskruez Barbara Grosskruez was honored at our Christmas Party as our Sertoman of the Year. Barbara was very moved as Bev Brownfield was reading her biography all she kept saying was, Barbara Grosskruez, Jan Clark and I m going to kill Cathy. She was surprised to find out that her daughter Cathy didn t write the speech, it was her daughter Amy, who lives in Wisconsin, did. This year's SERTOMAN of the YEAR is best described by two words: Care Taker. This baby boomer; the second oldest in a large family, with an ill father and an overwhelmed mother, was responsible for cooking
2 Barbara looks over Her award cleaning and child rearing from the ripe, old age of 9 years old. The responsibilities increased tremendously. Their father passing when this person was still just a teenager. Wanting a better life, he/she attended college for two years in order to become a teacher. Finding out that life had other plans they were married by the age of 20 and had two children by the age of 22. Life was filled with what this person always did best - taking care of others. Working, child rearing, being a good wife, going to dance lessons, participating as a scout leader, a leader in the PTA, a leader in the church community, a great friend and a great confidante. After 19 years of marriage, divorce was inevitable. The love was gone, the trust was broken and it was time to move on. Left saddled with debts which were not incurred by themselves. They forged on; buying a home for the one daughter that was still living at home and worked two jobs. Finding their soul mate at the age of 42, life began again - a fresh start, a new love. A few years into the relationship, cancer struck and in just over a year, plans were darted again. This Care Taker took care of their loved one until the bitter end. If that was not enough, the next day their parent became ill and again, this person stepped up to the plate and took care of their Mother until she also passed away. When one daughter had a child out of wedlock, this Care Taker was called to help care for their granddaughter while their daughter also tried to find a better path. Once this daughter got married and started a new life for herself with her daughter, this Care Taker found they had nothing to take care of. The other daughter noticed that Mom was struggling and she was also struggling, trying to figure out how to raise a family and have a career. Hitting a bit of a depression, life started to catch up to them. This is when our Heroine left a career of 27 years and took a leap of faith and moved to California to begin life anew once again. Moving here to become partners in real estate, help rear her West Coast Grand Kids, she was again in her element of taking care of others! She moved with the Family to Leona Valley and sought out a way to be of value to the community Joining SERTOMA, she has been the Treasurer for five years, has participated in almost every event through volunteering, taking money, cooking, cleaning, setting up and taking down. She participated through her own battle with cancer, through chemo and radiation and through her current situation with thriving with cancer again. Nothing stops this woman. She gives of herself like no other. She is always there for her loved ones and has the best work ethic I know of. She has been a pillar in my life, my entire life and I truly don't know what any of us would do without her. I am very proud to be the daughter of this year's SERTOMAN of the Year... Barbara Grosskreuz An astounded Barbara reacts to her nomination
3 TOM JOYNT SERVICE TO MANKIND RECPIENT Tom Joynt and Bev Brownfield We also presented our Service to Mankind award during our Christmas Party. Tom Joynt has served the Lakes Community since he moved there 16 years ago. While making the presentation to Tom, Bev Brownfield informed him that originally she hadn t voted for him but changed her mind as the nominations were discussed. His wife Linda informed him lovingly, I didn t vote for you. JUST A NOTE TO SAY THANK YOU FOR MAKING TODAY S SENIOR DINNER A HUGE SUCCESS WHATEVER THE CAPACITY YOU SERVED IN, ALWAYS KNOW THAT SERTOMA IS GRATEFUL. YOU MADE SO MANY FOLKS SMILE. 6 Linda Pearcy & Christy Adams Tom Smith managing the gift exchange HERITGE PARK By Karl Pearcy The Salute to Leona Valley Queens event in November was fun, but a very cold day. Now I've scheduled Sunday January 15th at the Leona Heritage Park for a "Salute to the Leona Valley Woman's club". It ran from the 1950's to the 90's and was a very dynamic organization The event will be from 12:00-3:00 and, as the queen salute, will be a kind of reunion for all who participated or remember those good times. The Community Center is at 8367 Elizabeth Lake Road at the top of the driveway. CHRISTMAS TURKEYS The Duarte family donated 36 turkeys to the community. On Dec. 17 th after our bi-monthly breakfast meeting, members gathered at Ray Mullens and Jan Clarks home to distribute toys, canned goods and turkeys to Code 7 ministries, and other organizations that will distribute toys and food to families in our Lakes and Valleys communities. FIREFIRGHTERS COLLECT FOR THE COMMUNITY On Dec. 10, 2011 at the corner of Leona Ave and Lake Elizabeth Road Fire Dept. # and the Leona Valley Sertoma collected toys and $ which was used to buy gift cards. HOME DEPOT On January 21, 2012 Home Depot of Palmdale will be at the Leona Valley School House to donate their time and manpower to the construction efforts. Jan is hopeful that they will help with the Sertoma containers at the Community Center as well as working on the outside walls of the Leona Valley Community Building. Go Jan! Thank you for all you do. The lock has been tampered with and needs to be rekeyed. The key no longer works in the lock. The basement will be fireproofed and file cabinets will be moved down there for storage.
7 Sertoma Christmas / Holiday Party Kayla Rohaley a 14 year old girl of Leona Valley is recovering from an appendectomy after her appendix ruptured and she became septic. Her ruptured appendix may have saved her life. Tumors on her appendix were found and biopsied. They were found to be cancerous. A cyst was also found on her ovary. Her family was told that it was a very slow growing cancer that is usually never discovered until it s too late. Her infection is being dealt with then the tumors will be addressed. Kayla s family is very blessed that she will be ok., Tom and Linda Joynt Our very own Rich Thomas was visiting his daughter in Vancouver, WA, when he was taken to the hospital suffering from stomach pain. Cysts were discovered on his liver on the size of a grapefruit and one the size of a cantaloupe. His gallbladder was also removed. He was released from the hospital on 12/17. He missed our Christmas party. He was there in spirit. We called him during our gift exchange portion of the evening and wished him and Mary a Merry Christmas. A few days ago, he went back into surgery because his wound was not healing from the inside. They are going to let it heal from the inside then deal with the outside. He will then be allowed to travel. He will be staying a week longer in Vancouver than they originally planned. Lu Boles checks out her goodies
