1 !"#" $&%')(+*,--. Huntsvillefolk.org \ APRIL PRE-MEETING WORKSHOP STRING INSTRUMENT ADJUSTMENTS FOR DUMMIES Conducted by Jim Holland HTMA member and multi-instrumentalist Jim Holland will present the next premeeting workshop at 1:00 on April 30 th in the library auditorium. Here s an overview of what Jim plans to present: 90% of all stringed instruments sold new are in need of adjustment. Ironically, entry level instruments are the most difficult to play for this reason, but even the costliest instruments often require setup work! We will demystify the critical adjustments of stringed instruments that make them easier to learn on and play, and produce better tone and volume. We will discuss string selection, pick or quill selection, how to adjust the "action", how to recognize fret wear, neck or fingerboard relief, nut height, bridge and saddle profiles, tuners, intonation, etc. Examples and demonstrations will include a guitar, dulcimer, mandolin, fiddle and both openback and resonator banjo. Participants are encouraged to ask questions, and bring any string instruments so we may assess them for possible adjustments to improve performance, and playing enjoyment. The Huntsville Traditional Music Association meets on the third Sunday of each month. Due to Easter Sunday conflicts, our next meeting is on: Sunday, April 30th 2:00-4:30 PM In the Huntsville Public Library Auditorium 915 Monroe Street, Huntsville, AL Oh The Weather Inside is Frightful If you ve been part of our meetings/jams at the Library lately you know that some meat lockers are perhaps warmer than the auditorium! President Joe Berry checked with the Library on this situation. They report they are aware of the room s temperature and that a replacement part for the heating/cooling system is on the way to hopefully remedy the situation. Until then, bundle up! 3 HTMA President s Notes April 2006 What is the song and who is the author? Blacker than midnight, teeth lak flags of truce Blackest man in de whole St. Louis Blacker de berry sweeter is the juice. Do you recognize the song? Well, try again: A black headed gal make a freight train jump the track Said a black headed gal make a freight train jump the track But a red headed woman makes a preacher ball the Jack. Unless I miss my bet, Jerry LeCroy already has the answer. For the slower student, add this: I loves dat man lak a school boy loves his pie Lak a Kentucky Col nel loves his mint an rye I ll love ma baby till the day Ah die. The words were composed in the back room of a Memphis bar called PWee s. It was one of many blues tunes that came off Beale Street. The author, a son and grandson of preachers, both of whom were former slaves, was educated in the Teachers Agricultural and Mechanical College in our hometown, now known as Alabama A & M University. Feelin tomorrow lak Ah feel today Feel tomorrow lak Ah feel today I ll pack my trunk make ma get away. I dare say the author made the greatest contribution to music of anyone that has ever lived in Huntsville. He was born fifty mile down the river, but he came here for his formal schooling. He went other places for the remainder of his schooling: Been to de Gypsy to get ma fortune tole To de Gypsy done got ma fortune tole Cause I m most wile bout ma Jelly Roll. To tell this story, I have borrowed words from one of his many songs. He tried these words, and the music that went with the package, on several publishers, all of whom said, No Thanks, it won t sell. Lawd, a blond-headed woman makes a good man leave town, I said a blond-headed woman makes a good man leave town, But a red-headed woman makes a boy slap his papa down. He did leave Huntsville and Florence, the place where he was born in a log cabin on November 16, I ll pack my trunk make ma get away St. Louis woman wid her diamon rings Pulls dat man roun by her apron strings. He was truly a pioneer. His life and music are parts of our heritage. Who was he? Oh ashes to ashes and dust to dust, I said ashes to ashes and dust to dust, If my blues don t get you my jazzing must. Joe M. Berry Additional Performance Opportunities Available! He will be greatly missed by all who knew him. 8 9 :3; < 9==9>?
