2 Dear guitar-lovers, 2014 is shaping up to be another action-packed year. The Guitar Society Orchestra is planning a busy program and continues to go from strength to strength. This rewarding ensemble experience combines making quality music with an enjoyable social atmosphere. Do contact our director, Mathew Laurenson, if you are interested in joining. I would also encourage you to regularly check the revamped guitar society website ( as there is much information concerning the exciting array of concerts coming up in I m also very pleased to announce that the guest artist and adjudicator for the 2014 Guitar Ensemble Festival is the young Swedish star Johannes Möller, virtuoso and composer extraordinaire, who won the GFA Solo Guitar Competition in 2010 performing his own composition. His concert is one that I m really looking forward to. I hope to see you all at the next guitar concert. Kind regards Jonathan Paget President, Classical Guitar Society of WA Taranaki Classical Guitar Summer School (Review) By John Dall I recently, 12 th to 18 th January 2014, attended the Taranaki Classical Guitar Summer School held at the New Plymouth Girls High School in New Zealand. This was an enjoyable week of classical guitar with many workshops and master classes to attend; myself and a friend from Brisbane presented two duets and received some excellent advice on how to improve our playing (see below). Each evening a concert held at The 4 th Wall, a local theatre. New Plymouth is a very pretty town near Mount Taranaki, a volcano that has been dormant for the past 250 years. In the days before the start of the summer school, Veronica and I did some exploring up the slopes of the volcano; the scenery and pathways were magnificent. The final concert was played in the open air on the lawn of a local park. The setting, although picturesque, was not the best for acoustics; but the weather was good and the audience enjoyed both the opportunity to picnic and generally enjoy the friendly atmosphere and to listen to the music of many guitars. If you go to this address, you will find links to explain more about the Taranaki Classical Guitar Summer School and in the group photo you may recognise a familiar face. Altogether a worthwhile trip meeting many great guitarists and composers; the experience would be rewarding for any guitarist. Perhaps our WA Guitar Society could be better represented in 2016, the next year for the summer school, by subsidising the attendance for our conductor and/or president. 2

Highlights include Elizabethan lute-songs, music from 17th-century masques for theorbo and baroque guitar, guitar songs from nineteenthcentury English drawing rooms, and modern English song repertoire from including Britten and Rutter, as well as from Australia and the USA.
