Let it go! -Elsa Things are about to get trashy up in here Today you are going to throw away every preconceived notion you have about what you should be doing and deliberately decide to stop the madness! Look back over all of the answers you ve written so far. What are the things you don t love about operating your business? What has been draining you of your time, energy and/or money with no return? What just isn t working? What has you feeling pooped? Write down all of the things that you can let go of this year. That s right throw them out... of your mind, that is! 13 It s called work for a reason! -Larry Winget Don t throw the baby out with the bath water... or something like that! Unfortunately we can t throw everything that we don t like to do out with the trash. Make a list of the responsibilities that you can t throw away... even if you want to. Which of these can you delegate to someone on staff? Can you pay someone to pay attention to any of these for you? If you can t afford to outsource it today, make note of it here anyway so you can work towards it. 14 The key is not to prioritize what s on your schedule, but to schedule your priorities. -Stephen Covey It s in the bag... Now it s time to decide what you want to focus on this year! You have to carry the weight of whatever you fill your bag with, so be sure that the priorities you choose are totes worth your effort, time and money. Again, look at the responses you ve written on your WORK//SHEETS so far. What are the things that you love about being in business? What can you do to more closely align your business with your original vision for it? Are there things you want to improve on or learn more about? What has been working that you want to continue or expand on? Write your priorities in the bag. (Be sure not to make your load too heavy!) 15 No isn t a four letter word. Oh no! Do you feel like you re doing something wrong when you say no to something? Don t! No isn t a bad word. In fact, it can be a really good word when used with the right intentions. The WORK//FLOW process is designed to help you identify your goals and priorities but also to identify the things that can keep you from reaching them. We can be hoarders when it comes to our list of responsibilities, letting things that should be in the trash sneak back on our to-do lists. Once a month review the things you wrote down in your trashcan and your shopping bag. Make sure that you are only carrying the weight of the things that you identified as important to reaching your goals. If you realize that something has taken over your to-do list, either put it back in its place or take something else out of your bag to make up for the extra burden. And when new a opportunity comes up and one (or more!) definitely will decide if it is more important than something else already in your bag. If it is, switch it out. If not, practice saying no until you re comfortable: This is a great opportunity, but it s not right for me/my business right now. This year, I m focusing on, and I m working really hard to keep myself from getting distracted so I can reach my goals.
