1 Notice and Note Resource Anchor Charts / Handouts (Nonfiction Writing) In the Details, Picture It, Tell Me A Story, Emotional Impact, Again and Again, Trust Me, Figuratively Speaking
2 These are in order based on the signposts you will typically encounter as you read. Signposts These markers can help guide you along the path to understanding as you read nonfiction. When you notice them, and take note!
3 Stop and Notice and Note In the Details When you re reading and the writer explains the who, what, where, when or why of an event, or the writer provides specific details such as names, facts, statistics, or quotations, You should stop and ask yourself: What/Who is this text about? The answers will help you understand the subject of the text or the intended audience.
4 In the Details What/Who is this text about? Congratulations! Today is your day. You're off to Great Places! You're off and away! Who = What = When = Where = You, the reader going somewhere special today, now Great Places, general near future Why = Unclear, but we can infer from Congratulations! that something was won or earned, like a degree.
5 Trust Me Stop and Notice and Note When you re reading and the writer makes a comment about his knowledge, experience, honesty, or even his faults, you should stop and ask yourself: Do I believe this writer? Do I like him? The answers will tell you if you can trust the writer s examples as true and how he is persuading you to think or act a certain way.
6 Trust Me Do I believe this writer? Do I like him? You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself any direction you choose. You're on your own. And you know what you know. And YOU are the guy who'll decide where to go. I like him because he just complimented me = brains in my head Shows respect toward the audience!
7 Stop and Notice and Note Picture It When you re reading and the writer provides details relating to what something, somewhere or someone looks like, sounds like, tastes like, feels like, or smells like., You should stop and ask yourself: What images do I see in my head and how do they make me feel? The answers may indicate the writer s attitude toward the subject.
8 Picture It What images do I see in my head and how do they make me feel? You will come to a place where the streets are not marked. Some windows are lighted. But mostly they're darked. A place you could sprain both your elbow and chin! Sight = darkness, streets without signs, rows of windows I feel uneasy, worried, scared.
9 The brief narrative may serve as an example of the writer s main idea or reveal the writer s attitude toward the subject. Stop and Notice and Note When you re reading and writer shifts to telling a narrative or short anecdote through a series of events in the order they occurred., You should stop and ask yourself: Why is this story important or how is it connected to the main idea
10 Tell Me a Story Why is this story important or how is it connected to the main idea The Waiting Place...for people just waiting. Waiting for a train to go or a bus to come, or a plane to go or the mail to come, or the rain to go or the phone to ring, or the snow to snow or the waiting around for a Yes or No or waiting for their hair to grow. Everyone is just waiting. Waiting for the fish to bite or waiting for the wind to fly a kite or waiting around for Friday night or waiting, perhaps, for their Uncle Jake or a pot to boil, or a Better Break or a string of pearls, or a pair of pants or a wig with curls, or Another Chance. Everyone is just waiting. Stories and examples of other people who ended up there as well, why they got there, what they did there, how they are stuck there. Makes the reader not want to get stuck too. Tells the reader to keep going places!
11 Stop and Notice and Note Emotional Impact When you re reading and the writer uses strong word choice, a rare exclamation point, the overuse of commas, or unexpected capitalization, You should stop and ask yourself: What s the emotion here? Whatever the emotion is, you will understand how the writer is feeling and how he wants you to feel as well.
12 Emotional Impact What s the emotion here? All Alone! Whether you like it or not, Alone will be something you'll be quite a lot. And when you're alone, there's a very good chance you'll meet things that scare you right out of your pants. There are some, down the road between hither and yon, that can scare you so much you won't want to go on. Fear Anxiety Loneliness
13 Stop and Notice and Note Again and Again When you re reading and you notice a word, phrase, object, or situation mentioned over and over, You should stop and ask yourself: Why does this keep showing up again and again? The answers will tell you more about the writer s controlling idea.
14 Again and Again Why does this keep showing up again and again? But on you will go though the weather be foul. On you will go though your enemies prowl. On you will go though the Hakken-Kraks howl. Onward up many a frightening creek, though your arms may get sore and your sneakers may leak. On and on you will hike, And I know you'll hike far and face up to your problems whatever they are. On you will go Onward On and on
15 Stop and Notice and Note BONUS: Figuratively Speaking When you re reading and the writer uses a simile, metaphor, personification, oxymoron or other nonliteral device, You should stop and ask yourself: Where does the writer compare two things? The answers will help you understand the complexness of the controlling idea.
16 Figuratively Speaking Where does the writer compare two things? Step with care and great tact and remember that Life's a Great Balancing Act. KID, YOU'LL MOVE MOUNTAINS! Balancing Act (metaphor) = You have to learn how to handle the bad times along with the good. Move Mountains (metaphor) = accomplish amazing things!

22 Again and Again You should stop and ask yourself: Why does this keep showing up again and again? I was hungry that year, hungry when I got up, hungry when I went to school, hungry when I went to sleep. She makes sure to describe the wet west-coast winter weather twice in the story. She lists the specific shopping contents (milk, bread, butter ) twice.
23 Trust Me You should stop and ask yourself: Do I believe this writer? Do I like him? I don t think we could have died in our middle-class Vancouver suburb.
24 BONUS: Figuratively Speaking You should stop and ask yourself: Where does the writer compare two things? Counting our pennies Something hit me like a physical blow She compares her experiences to the story of the Magi.
