1 Family History Materials List Introduction The Family History Library publishes the materials in this list to help family history centers and their patrons. These materials are not intended for resale by commercial vendors. Individuals may review many of the materials at their local family history center or obtain them at the library attendants areas of the Salt Lake Family History Library. Many of these materials are also available on the Internet at no charge (visit Materials that have been translated into Spanish and French are listed on pages 5 and 6. This list is updated as necessary at least once a year. Materials may be added to or deleted from it at any time without notice. Prices on this list are in U.S. dollars and are subject to change without notice. We invite family history centers to offer this list to patrons and staff at no charge. Types of Materials Most family history materials fall into one of these groups:. Introduce research strategies and describe the content, use, and availability of major records for specific topics, states, or regions (generally 60 pages or less). Finding Records of Your Ancestors. Explain the most useful records for the country and time period, provide an introduction to basic research tools, give strategies for finding records, and provide case studies to illustrate each step of the research process.. Describe a research tool, how it helps in research, how to use it, and what to do if you cannot find a name in it (4 pages). Letter-Writing Guides. Explain how to write letters to obtain information from those who might not understand English. They give English phrases with their foreign-language translation (8 pages). Genealogical Word Lists. Include foreign terms, with their English equivalents, that you might frequently encounter while doing research. Software and Resource Files. Help users organize their family history information. The resource files include censuses and vital records indexes. Work Sheets. Have preprinted headings and areas where data from censuses may be copied. Selected materials are available in Chinese, Danish, Dutch, Finnish, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Norwegian, Polish, Portuguese, Samoan, Spanish, Swedish, Tagalog, Tongan, Vietnamese, and many other languages. As of March 2000, the Personal Ancestral File 4.0 software (for Windows 95+) is available on a compact disc in French, German, Portuguese, and Spanish (77062, $6.00); as of May 2002, the Personal Ancestral File 5.2 software (for Windows 95+) is available on a compact disc in Chinese, German, Japanese, Korean, and Swedish (77034, $6.00). Orders for translated materials may be delayed if Distribution Services in Salt Lake City must obtain copies from an international distribution center.
