3 About this Report Introduction This is the annual report of the Cremation Association of North America (CANA), the preeminent source on cremation data from the United States and Canada. We hope that those in the industry find the information useful and a valuable membership benefit. Since 1998, the majority of the data used in this report was collected from the Vital Statistics Department of individual states. Unfortunately, the accumulation of a tremendous amount of data by these state bureaus can be a slow and painstaking process and CANA could not obtain all states 2009 information by the time this report had to go to print (10/27/10) for this reason, where necessary, state data from 2004 through 2008 was used to estimate the percentage of deaths that were cremated in the United States in 2009, 2015 and Canada s projections were based upon 2004 and 2008 figures. All death and cremation figures are based on the state where they occurred, regardless of residency. Projections Since 1998, CANA has used a five-year comparison period in order to arrive at the projections. The Federal National Center for Health Statistics National Vital Statistics Department provisional 2009 death totals for each state was used to determine the cremation percentage and estimated number of cremations performed in The applicable pages contain notations that show which method was used for each particular state. Data shown for the number of crematories was collected from surveys distributed to leading crematory manufacturers. All other figures were collected from crematory surveys distributed by CANA s Market Research & Statistics Group. The Preliminary Final 2008 Statistics section in this year s report is more accurate than the 2008 Projections section (i.e., preliminary data) presented in the July 2009 report because all figures have now been further updated and confirmed by the Vital Statistics Departments or a similar entity in each state. Projections for 2015 and 2025 are based on the preliminary final figures for No projections were made based upon 2009 data because this data is based (partially) upon projections or preliminary figures. Note that the state projections for 2015 have an upper bound of 85%. For this reason, some states 2015 cremation percentages are listed as 85+% (e.g., Wyoming). If the average percentage increase from 2004 to 2008 were compounded to 2015, the percent cremated in some states would exceed 85%. It is the belief of CANA s statisticians, however, that in these cases, states will conform to historical trends. Historically, once a state or province reaches a cremation rate greater than 85%, there is little if any increase in future years. Except for British Columbia and Quebec in Canada, plus Japan, India and Hong Kong whose cultures practice cremation as a religious custom, no state, province or country has cremated more than 80% of its deceased citizenry. How to Read this Report This report is divided into three key sections: Report Highlights, State Data and Data Trends. Report Highlights shows key findings of this year s study. The State Data section shows the final 2008 statistics, preliminary 2009 statistics and updated number of cases per crematory for each state. Data Trends shows comparisons between actual and projected cremations as well as death counts. Data and projections are shown in tables and graphs. Between 2004 and 2008, the percent increase in cremations was 4.8 percent. This represents an average increase of 0.96 percent each year. 13 Cremation Data & Predictions: Data Trends Comparison of Projected and Deaths The increase in the rate of cremations in the United States continues to exceed the increase in deaths when comparing 2008 actual rates to 2015 projected rates (see graph below). 19 Cremation Data & Predictions: Data Trends Major Trends Affecting Cremation CANA frequently receives inquiries about why consumers choose cremation. Based on the Wirthlin Study (now the FAMIC study) done in 2005, and other information collected via CANA surveys and assessments, the Association has developed the following statement about the reasons for choosing cremation: 1. COST Monetary implications are certainly a key factor in most memorialization decisions. Cremation provides an affordable alternative that many find appealing. The cost of cremation with limited memorialization services and a basic urn will generally range from $1,000 to $3,000 (with a national average cost of $1,650). This is substantially lower than a traditional funeral with burial that will range in cost from $6,250 to $8,000 (with a national average of $7,300) 1 before accounting for the gravesite, burial vault and headstone/grave marker. However, it is important to recognize that many aspects of a traditional funeral service are important to help families and loved ones deal with loss, and cost is not the only consideration when determining this end of life transition. 2. RANGE OF OPTIONS Many people find that cremation opens up a wider range of memorialization options than traditional burials. Cremated remains can be placed in a single location (a gravesite or a columbarium), scattered at a favorite location (with appropriate permission from property owners) or divided and incorporated into keepsake urns, jewelry and other items so that multiple family members may keep a loved one close. 3. ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT In the United States, interest in environmentally conscious practices has been amplified across all industries including death services. Environmental considerations are becoming increasingly important to consumers and subsequently the cremation industry. Traditional burials require land consumption and cemetery maintenance into perpetuity; cremation is plainly a greener and more eco-friendly alternative. 4. GEOGRAPHY Cremation allows people to easily transport their loved one s remains. Given our transient population, many families find that cremation enables them to return cremated remains from wherever their loved one has moved, to wherever their loved one still considers home. Returning a body is complicated and cumbersome; cremation serves as a simple solution that helps families fulfill a decedent s desire to return home. 5. RELIGIOUS ACCEPTANCE Many religions are becoming more tolerant of cremation and have begun to relax restrictions that once limited cremation as an option to many people. In some cases, churches have even begun to plan columbaria as part of the church property so those associated with the church can have their final resting place on church grounds. 1 National Funeral Directors Association CANA Public Statement on Key Cremation Growth Drivers 2009 Data and Projections to the Year Copyright CANA
