1 To: From: Joint Steering Committee f Development of RDA Ebe Kartus, ACOC Representative Page 1 of 10 Subject: Priity der f additions to authized access points representing a person (Revision of RDA 9.19) ACOC thanks the British Library f its proposal. ACOC agrees that this issue needs to be addressed, but does not suppt wholly removing priity der f additions to authized access points representing a person. We agree with the ALA response preserving titles and dates as preferred additions to access points, but would prefer new instructions at 9.19 in der to maintain the priity of titles, dates, and fuller fm of name over other additions to name access points. ACOC s proposed revisions to 9.19 maintain the precedence of titles, dates, and fuller fm of name while also addressing the British Library s concern that instructions do not permit what may be useful additions due to the priity der, and allowing a measure of flexibility in cataloguer s judgement. Our proposed revisions include the additional sentences at and found in the ALA response to 6JSC/BL/20. These additional sentences instruct cataloguers to choose the most authitative date when multiple dates are found in reference resources. As in the British Library proposal and ALA response, ACOC s revisions to 9.19 separate the instructions f Period of Activity of the Person and Profession Occupation, which were iginally separate elements later combined by 6JSC/LC/12. We agree that this is justified because the two are different elements and should be separate, but would caution against such reversals in the future. Proposed revision marked up copy General Guidelines on Constructing Access Points to Represent Persons When constructing an authized access point to represent a person, use the preferred name f the person (see 9.2.2) as the basis f the preferred access point.
