It says the Hotel is opposite the sea, Strond Street and Customhouse quay. In the 1851 Census (B-30) George Hipgrave is recorded as living in Stroud Street with his (second) wife Sarah and their daughter's Charlotte (24 years old) and Rosalind (20 years old). He is 63 years old and his occupation is listed as an Inn Keeper. They have two servants living with them (a male and a female) and they had six visitors staying with them. It says that George was born in Pirton, Hertford. In the 1861 Census (B-37) George Hipgrave is recorded at the Gun Hotel in Custom House Quay, Dover, Kent. He is recorded as being 79 years of age. His second wife Sarah Viney had died two three years prior to this. His daughter (Sarah) Susanna Hipgrave was living with him. She is recorded as being 30 years of age, although according to the records of her birth, she would have been about 33-4 years of age. They have four servants living with them at the Hotel and there is one lodger, Henry Nugent, a 50 year old "gentleman."
