ASNMU Minutes March 19, 2018 UC, Charcoal I. Call to Order a. 6:30pm II. Roll Call a. Simon Late; Excused b. Kyleigh Late; Excused c. Cody Excused d. Fese Unexcused III. Public Comment a. Adam: You re all beautiful people and are doing a great job IV. Approval of Consent Items a. Agenda 3/19/2018 i. Lana moves to Approve, Jamie Supports, Approved Unanimously b. Minutes 2/26/2018 i. Lana moves to Approve, Jamie Supports, Approved Unanimously V. Executive Reports a. President Tristan i. Tomorrow, if you don t know, I think it s the 2 nd annual Gender Fair 1. ASNMU will have a table, it s from 11am-3pm, so if you re interested in helping out, just being there for an hour or 30 minutes or two hours, or however long, just contact me after this, or just show up, it doesn t matter that much 2. We re going to talk about the elections coming up, and we re also going to talk about how ASNMU can be a resource for gender issues on campus, and even see if we can get some feedback about things that ASNMU could do to handle those issues and seeing what kind of resolutions or programs people want to see, that are relative to this 3. So it should be pretty interesting, Maddie was kind enough to let us have a table there ii. If you didn t see the , Wednesday there is going to be a University Forum in JxJ 1100 starting at 3pm with President Erickson, and he s going to talk about a lot of things that are happening on campus, kind of updating the community, like capital outlay and facilities, and all of that kind of stuff 1. If you have that time free, I highly encourage you to go, all of those always have a lot of good information, especially for you guy s as representatives, if people have questions about any of these things, so you can be in the know iii. Elections: 1. Next week, March 28 th, we re going to have our debates, JxJ 1318 at 6:30pm a. The posters are going up around campus, we got them, and the committee has that whole process planned out 2. Next Monday is the last day for students to submit a candidacy form 3. The next week after that, which is April, we re going to start voting, so it s coming up really fast 4. So, if you re a representative and you re interested in running for a position next year, make sure you turn in your form before next Monday, or you re going to have to apply next year iv. The last resolution that Norah wrote is signed in my office, and I m going to work with her to find out the next steps we want to go with this, like who do we want to send it to exactly, are we going to start with CUP, are we going to start with the Chair, kind of start figuring that stuff out

v. I m going to harass the North Wind tomorrow to pick up the candidate information forms, because they re supposed to be writing about them on Thursday, Sophie said she was going to be picking them up today, but I don t think that she did vi. I m going to set up a meeting with Karl, he works in IT and he knows about our online election system, so I m going to talk to him and figure out how we re going to set up elections this year, seeing how much we can update to make it look a little nicer, maybe if we can have pictures, and we re also going to talk about the format because the North Wing Referendum question needs to be separated from the Green Fund Referendum question because the Green Fund isn t actually a Referenda, it s more of a survey question, and we don t want to confuse students on that vii. That s all I have for now, so if you are interested in helping with the gender fair, feel free to ask me, otherwise feel free to stop by anytime tomorrow in JxJ from 11am to 3pm b. Vice President Connor i. I have a pretty brief VP report and then I will also be reading Cody s report for Chair ii. Just two quick updates about the Food Pantry: 1. They now have a FB page so like it, share it, do the social media thing 2. This Friday, the Food Insecurity Committee is meeting with Feeding America to talk about some different options to purchase bulk food from them, so that s an exciting step in the right direction c. Chair of Assembly Cody i. Connor on behalf of Cody: 1. He wants me to again apologize, Uncle Sam called him, he is down in Battle Creek doing some training for the National Guard 2. Cody s not mad, he s just disappointed, about several office log issues that he continues to harp on week to week a. He said: several of you continue to submit office logs for the week with little to no proof or evidence of what you re actually completing, saying things like I did a lot, I sent s, and had a meeting, is not a detailed explanation or acceptable b. These are issues that he has continued to harp on, I know it s the end of the semester, but we need to continue to do the fundamentals c. He will no longer be accepting logs that have such little information and logs that he has reviewed saying that they are doing work on days that haven t happened yet, which is another issue he keeps coming across d. He would like to say that failure to complete 2 or more weeks of office hours is grounds for impeachment, he really doesn t want to do that so closely to the end of the semester, or at all really, so please just take care of the fundamentals, I know it s getting towards the end 3. He also said it s the last three weeks, so we still have responsibilities as representatives, so keep it together, alright? d. Treasurer Sarah i. I m sorry about it being kind of last minute, but I sent a roughly updated leger to you guy s in your , it s a separate then the one you got from Cody 1. Work study is not incorporated quite yet but anticipate maybe $2,000 leaving for that ii. ASNMU Balance: $12, Before the end of the year, I d love more budgets to come, I know that there s one in the works right now for some social media, which is awesome 2. Otherwise, I have been working with a couple people who have been interested in this position iii. SFC is going really well, we ve been approving budgets a lot

VI. 1. We have 3 coming up this Thursday, if you re interested in seeing how that s run, you should come, if you ve never seen a meeting before, you should come, it gets pretty exciting a. They re for some pretty diverse groups, one of them we ve never had before, I think it s like a comic-con one iv. Stop in my office hours if you need any help with anything, if you want to hear more about my position, let me know e. ASNMUJ Kayleigh i. As far as Judiciary right now, we are finishing up the Working Policies, hopefully this week, so I will be able to bring you guy s the Working Policies for your approval next week for the meeting, so that s pretty exciting ii. As I ve mentioned a few times, if you re interested in Judiciary in any capacity, please let me know, learn more, I sent an out last week, if you didn t get it and you want to know more, let me know, but it had information about what we do 1. We are going to be looking to fill a lot of vacancies so if you re interested, if you know anyone who would be interested, please pass on that information 2. Your term as a justice in our group lasts 2 years, you do not have to run for elections, it s simply an interview with the President and the Chairperson, and an approval of the Assembly 3. It s a very important role, and as you look forward into next year, keep that in mind Committee Updates a. Jamie: Academic Affairs is in full force working on a lot of different things, I ll start with Kyleigh because Chloe can probably give her own i. Kyleigh is working on a project to get feedback from different constituents ii. Ravyn s working on finding a committee iii. Richard is still working on his app updates iv. Sherri is meeting with Dawn to discuss the child care program v. I am working with Elections committee and the Diversity Inclusion committee is drafting questions regarding diversity on campus, I m still waiting on the draft of questions, but when I get those, I would like everyone to review them, look them over, and answer them as best they can 1. I m hoping that will come by the 26 th or so, so that we can look them over and kind of think about them, and then send them feedback, so expect them b. Chloe: I ll do my Academic recap real quick: I heard back from Derrick Christian today for the Campus Collab project, we re going to need to start a new committee to get that going, it s going to be a lot of work, but it will be worth it i. As far as PR goes, Jamie and I have sent over a design for our election week filter, they re going to approve it, and then we ll meet with them again 1. Also, we ve started creating a new flag, like a banner/flag, for our office and something we can bring with us to meet and greets 2. Kyleigh s helping me to continue updating our booths with a new board c. Simon: I m going to let everyone talk about, if they have something they would like to tell us all, because I neglected to send out an , which is totally my fault i. So with me, I ve kind of took over the FB page, I m administrating the FB page, so if you have anything you want posted, let me know 1. We had one for the Food Pantry, which is really cool because they created a FB page on their own, so we shared that one ii. Parking and Traffic, our meeting was cancelled last Thursday so I don t have any updates for you iii. I m also looking at a new project for possibly getting an iclicker program going through NMU, I talked to MI State, or I m in the process of talking to them, to find out a little bit more about their

VII. process and how their program works, I ed them, got an back, and we re kind of in a little haze of I m waiting for a response back from the last 1. Connor: Now, in terms of iclicker program, what do you mean? a. Simon: ASMSU, they started an iclicker program where students can come in for a class, some classes require iclicker that you can just do in-class participation with, and they do cost money to rent/buy, so their student government actually bought a certain amount of them and they rent them out to students for free, I don t remember how many they have on hand, but it s a program for students to come in and borrow an iclicker, and they sign a contract saying if they damage or lose it, we will fine you for a new iclicker onto your Ebill, so just another program that we can initiate through ASNMU d. Anthony: In terms of the MIP study that I m doing with campus police and Marquette police, I heard back from one of the secretaries from the Marquette police department, they got back to me with some numbers in terms of what NMU students who were cited, not who but what numbers were cited, 18, 19, and 20 year olds, over the past year there have been about 90 citations for MIPs, so I m going to work with them a bit more closely to try and get a better understanding on what the demographics were i. In terms of what I m doing with the Credit Cap, Chloe sent out an , or CCed Alec Lindsay on to this document that I was working on, and he got back to us and said that all we need to do is basically create an Adhoc committee through the Academic Senate, so that will be my next step e. Marissa: I ve been helping people with their projects and helping PR getting a new flag for meet and greets, and I ve also been collaborating with the 18 credit cap, helping Norah with all of her resolutions, and then I ve also been communicating with Mike Bath for RAD, and I m still waiting on a reply to my I sent out a week ago, and then I m still working with the MERC to potentially take over printing f. Lana: I looked at the Pride Index website to see where other schools are and where we re at, and where we struggle, for the pride index to get it up, which is a website and that s how friendly and accepting your campus is to the LGBTQ community, we re at a 3.5 out of 5 right now i. For External Affairs, this weekend is the Saginaw Valley State University conference, we are not going, but we do have the opportunity to skype into a 3-hour conversation for higher education fund, so I think Simon and I are partaking in that, I contacted LSSU and Tech and they both told me that they were not aware of this conference so we re going to collaborate and get an opinion on that 1. I won t be coming back next year, so if anyone would like to know what I ve done or what I do, please come talk to me New Business a. Norah Johnson- A resolution on alternative solutions to raising the credit cap within the confines of five credit laboratory classes. a. Connor: Norah will be presenting a resolution and then voting next week b. Norah: Basically what I want to talk about today is, I basically want to throw this idea out there, it s basically just a rough outline of this idea that I had that instead of trying to work with the Board of Trustees to get the credit cap up immediately, because it seems like it s going to be an ongoing issue, that this would be a stop gate measure in-between now and then, you should have an updated one, it s shared out through google docs, it should be in your i. Basically what it does is, for 5 credit laboratory classes, it reduces them to 4 credits because the fifth credit, the credit hours that they are technically counting for that, are during the lab itself and lab itself under the system that we use, aren t supposed to be counted as class hours, they re counted as outside work hours and it s expected for every hour of in-class work that you have, you will have 2 hours of out of class work, so it actually works into the system that you have labs outside of the classes, so if it s in a 4 credit system, it s just something to make the 16 credits a little bit more manageable so

you re not trying to work an odd number of credits, into an even credit system, especially when it s 16 so it s clearly designed for 4 credits ii. It was just something I thought of because I struggled a lot this semester when I was trying to schedule physics and chemistry all in the same semester iii. I would really appreciate, you all have the ability to comment, so if there is something that you don t like, or just want clarification for, I would like it if you would comment just to make it easier and so I have annotations of what was said, too c. Chloe: My first thought is, instead of viewing it as an alternative solution to raising the credit cap back, because I don t really want it to interfere with that on its own, what if its, its own resolution? So basically it s just a title change i. Norah: Basically it s just in-between steps because I know that it s going to be awhile so I just want something that will d. Chloe: Right, I just don t want this to, in the end i. Marissa: Take away from ii. Anthony: Substitute for e. Kayleigh: I think what she s trying to say that the title of it right now is A resolution on alternative solutions to raising the credit cap so adjusting that name so that it doesn t sound like it s i. Norah: So additional solutions f. Sarah: I support this, a lot of my science major friends are really out of luck when it comes to classes, now I understand that maybe the university is doing the same thing as they re kind of doing with the 20 hours a week that you can work, where if you took on more, they know that it would be too much for you, but science majors who are taking physics and chemistry at the same time, if you believe you can handle that and you have to get done in four years or four and a half years, some people just have to take that on, and if every science major has to pay more to take more credits because they can handle it and they have to graduate, clearly this is not an issue of them not being able to handle it, it s an issue of the school wanting more money, so I love this, and I don t think it needs to have alternative solution, because it s a wonderful starting point to a serious problem g. Connor: I really like this resolution simply because I ran into this problem my freshman year having to take back to back chemistry classes that are 5 credits, so in terms of how that shaped up for credit count, that makes it really weird, especially when you are a freshman trying to get all of your core classes so you can start going into your major classes, I was just wondering if you could clarify the breakdown of the numbers because I think I understand it, but I just want more clarification i. Norah: Basically, these numbers are coming from, if you take the 16 credit cap and you re doing the block rate tuition, this is the cost of a credit within that 16 credit cap, if you have, when the university charges you credit by credit, it s charging you at a higher fee than the 16 credit to 12 credit block, so I did it based off the 16 to 12 credit block because it s more of a representation of the fact that these students are most likely going to be taking 16 credits and they re just reducing it from the 17 credits that they would be taking normally h. Kyleigh: I really support this, I think that it s definitely needed because I ve had a couple friends who ve also come up to me, talking about how their kind of screwed over by the school because they end up taking too many credits so they don t get into the 16 credit cap, or they have to take summer classes, so it kind of sucks because they re just trying to get done, get graduated, and they re literally paying for it i. Anthony: The $317.82, and the $333.94, where did those numbers come from, are those your suggested numbers?

VIII. i. Norah: That s directly from, basically, the university has a tier system for how they price their classes, they have the in-state and out-of-state, but then they also, within the instate, there is underclassmen and upperclassmen, and the upperclassmen are charged more for the classes because they know you re not going to drop out at that point, it s a lovely move, but basically it s, if you took 16 credits and divide it by the tuition rate, each credit comes out to being about that much, I m pretty sure I rounded a 10 th of a penny off one of them, but it s allowing the university to make the same money it would be making if they were charging you within the flat credit rate j. Anthony: I m just a little confused as to what this, so you re saying to lower them to $317.82, instead of $489? i. Norah: No, that s for lower level and upper level, it s the class divisions k. Sarah: So, since I think, in a paragraph, I don t even know, I ve only been involved with resolutions for a while now, and I don t know how much you can have taken out or blocked into different paragraphs, if you could have a graph here, I don t know what you re allowed to have, so in my experience, I ve talked to members of the Academic Senate, informally, actually this last week, and we discussed how much a resolution really means, how much value it holds, and how much more information presented with the resolution, the more that they take it seriously, without naming my source, they would really appreciate it if you would have that kind of stuff on a separate document, data to back it up, so instead of having it in the be it resolved, just because it does look a little bit jumbled and hard to understand, although it makes perfect sense, having that on the back side with a link the website, with other supporting documents, might be best, I want it here, and that s a great example, especially to show what s going on, but yeah, supporting documents style l. Connor: Then this will be on the Agenda, tentatively next week, pending any changes and what not Good of the Order a. Chloe: If everyone could go get their headshot taken, where is it again? i. Sarah: The VMA is doing headshots, I want to say it s in JxJ, third floor, for $5, I think they re using, I don t know if they re using the university photographer, but last year the photographer was great, it s only $5, you can get an outfit at the Career Closet, we re hopefully going to be there handing out pamphlets for that, probably not the whole entire time, but maybe Simon or I will just give them to VMA b. Chloe: If everyone could go do that and then it to me, I m going to add them to our rep to know forms i. Marissa: When? 1. Sarah: Wednesday, there s a poster outside the office c. Heather: Wednesday we have the ticket booth again, based on the doodle poll, if it doesn t sound right, let me know, I currently have: i. 9:30-10:30: Kyleigh ii. 10:30-11: Me iii : Norah, Anthony, Tristan iv :30: Anthony and Chloe v. 12:30-2: Anthony vi. 2-2:30: Anthony, Simon, Tristan, and Cody vii. 2:30-3: Simon and Cody d. Heather: The Care Package Drive is April 14 th 9am-3pm, we still need volunteers so please sign-up e. Kayleigh: I just forgot to mention in my report, if you are interested in Judiciary and do want to see how we work, we meet tomorrow in the ASNMU office at 8am, I know it s bright and early, but I usually try to bring free breakfast
