4 The Long version getting ready for the 4-week CHALLENGE When the 4-week challenge starts everyone needs to know about it. Encourage your staff to talk about it on their own social media accounts and spread the word with colleagues in as many ways as possible. Start by including messaging like the examples opposite on your intranet, which does a great job in telling everyone that the challenge is coming, and don t forget to promote it on notice boards and in all of your newsletters, s or magazine articles. 6 lifestyle choices In our adult years, the cally increase we make can dramati ming ill later in life. our chances of beco n from Public One is a campaig lp change the way Health England to he king small changes we live our lives. 5 Tips to spread the word Keep updating your intranet over the 4-week period, and if you have a newsletter include an article, and send reminders to keep the momentum going. can write as many as you like but if you want to keep it to one a week here are a few suggestions of the sort of messages you could include: Today s the day to take the challenge! Get in touch if you need any hints and tips to make it as easy as possible, or if you have any questions, or even just fancy a chat about how things are going. Launch What a week that was! Week 1 So it s the end of the first week, how did you get on? From what we hear everyone s staying very determined and has definitely risen to the challenge. Why not share your progress with your family and friends on social media and tell them what you re doing and how well it s going? It could inspire them to search One for themselves and take the free health quiz. Keep it up! Woo-hoo halfway through! Brilliant so far, keep it up, you re halfway there. How are your colleagues doing? Do they need a bit of extra support if they re wavering? The team challenges seem like a lot of fun; don t forget to share any photos and remember, get in touch if there s anything we can help with. WEEK 4 Well done! How are you now? Week 2 Fantastic, you re there, done it, sorted! It s time to celebrate (but let s not over-indulge), share stories and see how everyone else has done. We might even have a bit of a do to mark the occasion, so look out for details. But now you re feeling good about yourself, don t stop! Search One online for more hints and tips about staying healthy for good. Because there s only One. Week 3 Stay strong, you ve turned the corner Okay, it s the third week in and your new habits should be starting to feel like second nature. Think how good you ll feel about yourself when you get back to work on Monday knowing you ve resisted temptation over another weekend. So keep it up, you re nearly on the home stretch. 8 9
6 Track your success r pack contains posters, wall charts and bunting ready for display. They should be as visible as possible and be placed in communal areas, such as in kitchens, around the notice board, or the staff canteen. The materials will also be available as digital downloads and be photocopy Eat Well pledges Start the day with a healthy breakfast Eat your 5-a-day Say no to unhealthy snacks and puddings Drink Less pledges Pace yourself on a night out have a glass of water between every alcoholic drink Swap cocktails for mocktails Order a soft drink instead of an alcoholic one friendly, so you can print as many as you need. The wall chart is a place for everyone to make their pledges and track their progress throughout the 4-week period. If your employees are stuck for ideas here are some suggestions: Move More pledges Break up sitting time with a walk at lunchtime Take the stairs instead of the lift Start a new exercise Be Smoke Free pledge STOP for 28 days (because you re more likely to stop for good if you do) DOING IT TOGETHER There s nothing better than a bit of healthy competition to up the motivation levels. So we re suggesting a big group challenge, where you get together with colleagues to do something in a group, as well as taking part as individuals. For this we ve provided an A4 poster with a blank space for you to describe what your company is up to, outline any big group challenges you ve thought of, hero any stand out performances and publicise any incentive or reward schemes you may have going. It would be great if you could think up big group challenges of your own, but here are some fun ideas for starters: cut back on alcohol team quit How about getting everyone to drink less and raise money for a good cause. They could be sponsored with money going to a designated charity. The fewer drinks drunk, the more money is raised. For help along the way use the Drinks Tracker app. It s easier to do difficult things together, so get your staff to pledge to stop smoking in teams. For extra support use the Smokefree app. Mountain Climb Get your staff to move more by challenging them to climb stairs in the workplace rather than using the lift, to the equivalent height of Ben Nevis. Calculate how many stairs need to be climbed over the 4-week period and give out prizes to the person or team who conquers Ben Nevis first. If you haven t got stairs then team up and use the Couch to 5k app. BE SUGAR SMART Organise teams with the aim of reducing sugar over the 4 weeks. The team that cuts back most on sugar gets tea made for them (sugar free) the following week by the team who cut back the least. For help along the way use the Sugar Smart app
7 Promotion at work For your workforce the One 4-week challenge is a way to get together, take part in something worthwhile and encourage each other to make small changes to be more healthy. It can also integrate into your own well-being programme, if you have one. Here s a timeline with some ideas to help you promote the 4-week challenge alongside your own health and well-being activities. TIMELINE THE BIG LAUNCH Week 2 Week Send a motivating around telling everyone they ve already done a week Keep encouraging your workforce with an all-staff reminding everyone they re more than halfway there Encourage workmates to write about how they re feeling on the company website Remind them to post images and posts on their own social media accounts Publish ongoing team results internally to keep the competitive element going Organise a Mid- Challenge meeting where staff can tell their stories Week Week Upload information about One and the 4-week challenge on your intranet and include links to One online Encourage staff to search One and take the free health quiz Organise a How Are? launch event Mark the end of the 4-week challenge with a ve Done It social event where everyone gets to celebrate their achievements Announce the team results and hand out prizes if you have them Send an encouraging your staff to keep their healthy habits going 12 13
8 Keeping it going The One 4-week challenge won t be a walk in the park although a walk in the park would be a good place to start. To keep the enthusiasm up and the momentum going it s important to really motivate your colleagues, as there will be times they will flag and need a pat on the back. So perhaps set up a buddy system, and keep sending s reminding everyone how well they re doing. And remember, we re here to help. Any time you need to know anything, or you need any more materials from us, please contact partnerships@phe.gov.uk 14
