H ello fabulous creative friend! Welcome to Winter Soul Flakes, a wintery snowy sparkly class with me, Tam! :) Hi! In this class I will demonstrate how to create 3 wintery lollipop girls with their whimsical friends in different skin tones. This PDF covers how to create a front-facing light skinned 'lollipop' girl and I'll also give you tips on how to create your own whimsical characters. We will also look at how to make a snowy, wintery, layered background and how draw pretty snowfakes. Yay! I hope you have a fabulous time in this class and if you enjoyed the class I hope you'll check out some of my other classes! Keep creating art. It helps create a happier and healthier life! :) Much love, Tam xoxo

Supplies Used for this Class Please note, below are the supplies I used, but you can substitute the supplies if and where needed if you don't have what I've used. Also: for skin tones I do not always the same exact colours. Experiment and play with your supplies and the variety of colours you have available to you. Supplies for a Light-Skinned Lollipop Girl 1 sheet of 140lbs watercolour paper (16 x 12 ) - Brand: I used: Waterford & Saunders Graphite pencil for sketching (I use a graphgear 1000 by pentel, the lead I use is 2b, the width of the pencil 0.9 you don't need to have this pencil, just sharing what I used) Skin tone supplies and colours I used (substitute with different brands and colours where needed only listing exactly what I used in case you are curious): Caran D'ache Neocolour II watersoluble Crayons, in the following colours: salmon + salmon pink Dabber (Ranger): sandal + mountain rose + hazelnut Gold fuid acrylics: titan buff Heavy body acrylics (Daler Rowney): fesh tint Colour Pencils in violette, purples, dark reds, dark browns (the brand I use are prismacolor and luminance (caran d'ache) I also used Derwent inktense pencils in the colours of ink black, aubergine, reds and browns For facial features like eyes and mouth: Tombow Markers/ Caran D'ache Neocolour II watersoluble Crayons in colour of choice For fne details: Black marker with fne tip: posca or signo-uniball/ White marker with fne tip: posca or signo-uniball For hair: tombow markers/ watersoluble crayons & ink in your colours of choice (I mix several different turquoises/ light blues) For the background: collage materials of choice (I use book pages, music scores, tissue papers) Water/ Brushes (I like 'pro arte acrylix' brushes) / Gel Medium (for gluing) Some heavy body and fuid acrylics in colour of choice White gesso Brayer Stabilo all pencil or watersoluble pencil in black

Drawing a front-facing lollipop girl 1. Start with a circle (or fat-sh oval) shape, sketch this in lightly, don't press your pencil down too hard, you'll want to erase quite a few of your lines later. 2. Draw a vertical line through the middle of the circle/ oval (use the guide above to show you where to place the nose). 3. Draw a horizontal line mid-way down the circle (this is approx where you will place your eyes). 4. Draw another horizontal line through the middle of the bottom part of the circle/ oval (this is approx where the middle/ bottom of the nose will go) 5. And again, draw another horizontal line through the bottom-bottom part of the circle/ oval (this is roughly where the mouth will end up). 6. Allow for the space of approximately 1.5 eyes between the two eyes. 7. Depending on how stylised you're making your face, you could allow for some space on each side of each eye on this face the spaces are fairly minimal but you can play with that. These dimensions are based on a nonrealistic whimsical face. If you want to develop your own style or you want to create a specific ethnicity, you can adjust the features accordingly. Obviously, many faces have all sorts of different dimensions, depending on ethnicity and simply differences in shape, so you can play with these guidelines. This is a 'distorted' whimsical face that doesn't look anything like a realistic face. If you want to develop your own whimsical style, play with the given dimensions today and experiment. Adjust size and placement and different combinations to find out what it is YOU like! :) Depending on your style and preferences, the mouth/ eye/ nose dimensions and your personal style can be very different.

The eyes step by step Tips on doing eyes. Only ever fully expose the iris and/ or pupil if you want your person to look startled, shocked or scared. To give your character a more relaxed expression, partly cover up the Iris and pupil (see in the image above). As a general rule, aim for the size of approx 1 to 1.5 eyes between the two eyes you are drawing. This is based on a whimsical lollipop type of face. On more realistic faces you'd aim for approx 1 eye in between the two eyes. But again: depending on if you want to develop your own style, play around with the spacing in between the two eyes.

The Nose The noses on my whimsical faces are usually simple little things. I don't go into too much detail. Much of the shape of it is created through the shading. You can make your nose as simple or as elaborate as you enjoy. In the above image you can see the simple steps I take to create mine.

The Mouth Mouths too can have all sorts of shapes. They can be small or large, think or full. Lips can be luscious and broad or thinner and elongated. Again, different mouth shapes can be experimented with! Try out all sorts of different shapes to see which ones you like and don't like. If you want your mouth to smile, pull up the outer corners a little. Follow the easy steps above to create a simple mouth.

Shading the Face There are many ways that one can shade a face. It all depends on where you assume the light is coming from. In this painting I assume the light comes from the front. Below I've detailed where the darker and lighter shades go. Colours & Supplies I like using for shading a light-skinned face: I don't always use the same colours, but mostly I tend to go to the following colours & supplies: Skin tone supplies and colours I used (substitute with different brands and colours where needed only listing exactly what I used in case you are curious): Caran D'ache Neocolour II watersoluble Crayons, in the following colours: salmon + salmon pink

Dabber (Ranger): sandal + mountain rose + hazelnut Gold fuid acrylics: titan buff Heavy body acrylics (Daler Rowney): fesh tint Colour Pencils in violet, purples, dark reds, dark browns (the brand I use are prismacolor and luminance (caran d'ache) I also used Derwent inktense pencils in the colours of ink black, aubergine, reds and browns For facial features like eyes and mouth: Tombow Markers/ Caran D'ache Neocolour II watersoluble Crayons in colour of choice For fne details: Black marker with fne tip: posca or signo-uniball/ White marker with fne tip: posca or signo-uniball For hair: tombow markers/ watersoluble crayons & ink in your colours of choice (I mix several different turquoises/ light blues). Paying attention to detail A face really comes to live when you pay attention to the little details. Small additional highlights, subtle gradient blending etc will add depth and intrigue to your face. So, adding little details is not something to gloss over! Some important details to include to bring your face to live more: Eyes the eyeball itself is rounded and will have a small shadow cast onto it from the upper lid. Little refective highlights in the eyes add sparkle to your eyes. The tear duct often 'bulges out' a little and therefore catches some light, hence there is often a subtle little highlight on it. The bottom and top eyelids both tend to be lighter in the middle than on both outer parts of the lids. Inside the tear-duct too there are sometimes some tiny small refective highlights.

Nose Often the bits under the nostrils stick out a little and therefore catch some highlights. Also there can be a highlight right under the tip of the nose which helps with 'shaping the nose', the outer nostrils are darker and sometimes the entire nose casts a shadow onto the part above the upper lip. Mouth Assume the upper lip is darker than the lower one, yet there are variations of darker and lighter segments inside both lips. The two 'bulging out parts' on the upper lip that we all have on our lips can be a tad bit lighter and the bit in between them both darker. The bottom lip is lighter in its entirety but tends to be a bit darker in both corners and the bottom of it too is darker. The bottom lip is the one that has more actual bright highlights. Adding those makes your mouth 'glisten' a bit. How to achieve smooth shading The way I like creating smooth shading/ blending is by using a semi-damp brush (avoid coarse brushes) and 'scrub' your paint gradually into the area where you want the smooth shading to happen. Flatten the head of your brush against the paper and scrub gently, experimenting with adding or removing water and alternating between using acrylics and watersoluble paints.

Sketching an Upper Body, Clothing & whimsical friends Depending on your skill level, you can make this more or less complex. If you're a beginning artist, you may choose to simplify your torso by hanging the arms down so you can avoid hands (they can be tricky even for very established artists). Things to remember when sketching bodies/ limbs: Start sketching them using larger shapes frst, add detail and refne later. Use ovals and cubic shapes to sketch the basic limbs and shapes frst. When you add clothing remember that it doesn't sit tightly against the body (usually). Your basic shapes imply skeleton and some fesh, so you want to allow some space between your basic shapes and clothing. On this painting we added 2 whimsical characters who obscured quite a bit of the body if you're planning on adding animals too, start adding them roughly too while you're working on the body.

Creating Whimsical Animal Friends You can create some really simple yet wonderful whimsical animal friends by working with some very basic/ simple shapes and designs.

Changing the direction of where the animal friend looks to I often like to have my animal friend look up at the girl or to the side of the other friend. You can easily change the direction where your animal is looking to by simply changing where you place the facial features and where you place the irises within the eyes.

Creating the background Layering is a great way to make an interesting background! My usual steps are as follows: 1. Random collage. I add this with gel medium to both the background and I also overlap some into the hair and the animal bodies. This is to create cohesion. 2. Once the layer is dry I add colour with watersoluble crayons & tombow markers. I activate them with a brush and water. 3. I activate them with a brush and water.

4. Once those layers are dry I add a layer of white gesso with a brayer, this is to mute down some of the vibrant colours in the background. 5. At this point I worked on adding colour/ paint to the animals and upper body of the girl.

6. Regarding the animals and dress/ coat; I added subtle shading to help give the animals and dress a sense of 3d-ness also. 7. For hair I use dark and light hair strands in the blue/ turquoise range. 8. Hair is often darker in the parting and by the neck area against the cheek.

9. Before adding the stars and snowfakes to the background I brought back a bit more contrast by adding some of the colours back in. I did that in fewer areas than when we did the frst step of adding background colour. I'm looking to create contrast here. 10. With a black watersoluble pencil like Inktense or Stabilo All I drew several whimsical stars in the background, painted them in with white marker and added water to the pencil to create a bit of dark shading around them.

how to draw snowflakes I love drawing snowfakes! Like drawing mandalas, they can be really meditative and therapeutic to make. They are straight forward and easy to do and you can create them in a million different shapes and sizes for that unique snowfake feel. Here are 3 examples of snowfake design. You can completely adjust and add your own doodles to them though. Couple of thing to keep in mind when drawing snowfakes: 1. They have a centre point with 'sticks' coming out (I use 8, but you can change that). 2. The added shapes are usually more jagged rather than rounded, though I do throw in some round/ curly/ swirly shapes here and there. 3. Snowfakes are not solid, like mandalas. Their shapes are built around the sticks.

I used a white signa uniball pen and posca pen to draw the snowfakes on the background. I also added white little dots to the background to add sparkle and 'snowiness'. Tip! Alternating line thickness can give a lovely effects to your snowflakes.

And yay, the painting is fnished! :) Here are some more close up shots:
