You have a recording of the conversation to refer to. This report is based on the notes you sent me, with extra comments and amendments in RED. You also have an annotated version of the Critical Review. Feedback on exercises and assignment Demonstration of technical and Visual Skills, Quality of Outcome, Demonstration of Creativity Changing Scene project: Discussed that I found the final work unsatisfactory likes the combination between photos, drawings, paint and tracing through photoshop. The journey is more interesting than the destination. That s often the case and as long as there s good work along the way I wouldn t worry too much. Likes fragmented feel and sense of movement pointed out quality of line in the quick gesture drawings, don t overlook these drawings it is a way of holding it all together. Discussed use of colour I agreed the orange doesn t work is too decorative - and my dissatisfaction that monochrome always seem to work better. Discussed the use of PS as a way of capturing options inverting colours and so on which may be worth pursuing. The dialogue between hand made and digital is worth keeping in mind at all times, but retain the nuance of the lines wherever possible. It adds life. Could restrict to coloured pens and build with monochrome plus one or 2 colours. Likes the sense of the space becoming solid as a prismatic surface ref Picasso Les Demoiselles d'avignon where there is a rhythmic quality to the surface and space stops becoming space.

2 Remember that collaged elements add their own negative space that is related to the shape of the cut pieces and not to the subject matter on the piece (unless of course, the piece is cut flush to the subject). Artists book: Research good with lots of interesting artists looked at. Discussed that ideas are overlapping, spilling over into work. Likes the flag book and we discussed the inspiration it has given for the next project A Finer Focus. Be open to work emerging from the work things that I have looked into are recurring which is coming together more for me now. Discussed that I thought Assignment 5 starts to really bring this together. Not much to add here, except to echo your thoughts. You re now letting different exercises and the Parallel Project infect one another. Given the complex site of you Parallel Project and the way communities interact, that seems inevitable. Well done. Finer Focus: Likes how it has been tied back to the artists book. Discussed the amount of work it takes do the detailed work and discussed my ideas to work on it and leave blanks that become part of the work. Discussed an option that I could cut holes for the blanks and then lay over other work. Discussed the process I have gone through which led to the making of the work moving through photograph and collage and drawing and the artists books and should want to write about it in those terms bring out the conversations that have happened to bring this work about. This is a methodology of my practice that I should continue. If this remains unfinished, then don t worry unduly. The way the exercise has acted as a catalyst for your thinking has already helped. Time and the Viewer: I have identified the problems which are all valid likes the research and history surrounding the work and the supporting work in the sketchbook however not successful as it stands discussed that I may use this as raw material to develop. The sketchbook works better - less distinction between foreground and background it is clashing together, and negative space formed from cut outs pieces of collage adds structure. The final piece seems to separated in terms of figures/ground. your best work is denser and flatter with stuff jostling for position on the surface. Assignment 5: Likes the ambition with the work and the artists researched discussed that I have thought about including text and drawing and sound. Film is a good length not too long need to think about the pace of the video, it is quite even and steady at the moment, could speed up/slow down to add variety and reflect the changes in pace could pan in on closeups focus or zoom in on areas/blur others out etc. Make sure pics fill the frame some of the portrait pictures don t have the impact as they don t fill the screen. Discussed that the work could include my voice overlaid over. Ref Alison Carlier sound piece Adjectives, lines and marks It might be that you end up with an AV element to the Parallel Project. Thinking about pace / sound / filling the frame and how still images sit with moving ones could all be a part of the experience. Of course, the dense textures surfaces are flattened a little

3 when scanned/photographed and placed in a film, and you may want to (a) think and out his in Log and (b) find a way if mitigating against it in film. Parallel Project Good that PP project feeding a lot of the other work now can tie up /say this is interesting place to pause. Does not need to be completely finalised I can pull it together and then speculate on where it will go next. Discussed that I will take this into my next course as there is so much more I want to explore. There s a sense that whatever state the Parallel Project ends up in, or what you end up submitting for assessment, that there will continue to be work to do. This is how having a practice feels. If you decide to do Studio Practice as your next course, the PP could/should provide raw material. General points on developing my work: Think about noise and hubbub of Brick Lane and how I could bring that into the work. Could zoom in and isolate areas to photograph and reuse to generate new work Fold back work into other work, take photos and then reuse. Try drawing on clear acetate to overlay move around, photograph etc. Likes the complexity of the process I have developed. Sketchbooks Demonstration of technical and Visual Skills, Demonstration of Creativity Life Drawing, not coursework: really likes the small paintings in brush and dilute ink leaving the body behind by drawing the spaces around discussed the discipline of life drawing good to go back to basics and to think about the importance of line, tone shape etc). Other sketchbook work has been covered in the rest of the report. You may not like the format you re using, but the large format is working. Reverting to a portrait book may be less cumbersome, though. All in all there s some good work in the sketchbook as you play and experiment. Keep it up. Research Context, reflective thinking, critical thinking, analysis Referencing very good throughout. Derrida research and write up - good attempt at a difficult thinker - discussed the ideas such as trace, deconstruction and fragments and that these are things already known and Derrida articulates them and the fact that he is an outsider looking in. Discussed edges, parergon what is inside and outside frame and that I want to follow this up further eg could look at The truth in painting where the four essays form the four edges of the frame. He s hard work, but can be very stimulating for a visual artist who is looking at things like the trace. Likes that I am referring to work previously created and integrating what I do and finding connections in other work. When referencing other artists in general make sure they are highlighted to make it clear you have been looking at them.

4 Learning Logs or Blogs/Critical essays Context, reflective thinking, critical thinking, analysis Critical Review: Interesting premise - good direction to go in - think more about theatricality could make this the focus of the CR and explore the theatricality of Piper s work to Rodinsky s Room. Tighten up at the beginning of intro, say precisely about what I am going to do- to give more space for conclusion. Take out Chapters can be just Part 1 Part 2 etc. Take out my collage work. To reduce word count could put long quotes as Appendix and then could quote in summary from that. Can do an investigation or exploration does not need to necessarily be a question. Intro could make clear that this CR is a way of further exploring the PP and areas that I am interested in. Possibly remove the exploitation angle and focus on ruins/theatre. See also my notes the Word Document. Learning Log: This is good and I like that you are not afraid to admit your failures and weaknesses. As you move to the end of this course you may want to revisit and edit earlier post for this course with further reflection. Your work and study is now becoming dense and cross-referring within itself. That s good, and there might be a few things that you could add to form the early part of the course that foreshadow the work you re making now. You could amend the old posts with a new colour of text. Suggested reading/viewing Context You might enjoy the Derrida film. It s a documentary that follows his around. Find it on YouTube. I think it reveals him to be more playful and impish than his writing: Look again at collagists like Kurt Schwitters / Hannah Hoch. Pointers for the next assignment Reflect on this feedback in your learning log. Follow up on the suggestions I have made.
