2 Sew Spoiled Doodle Bag By Leah Williams Material List for Doodle Bag: Printable fabric ( June Tailor, Fabric-Stick ), ink jet printer, accent fabric, liner fabric, ribbon, non toxic fabric markers and matching string. 1a Step 1 Step 1: Gather your materials printable fabric, ink jet printer, ( You can not use a Laser printer for this project because the ink will rub off. ) fabric markers, accent fabric, liner fabric, ribbon and matching string. ( Diagram 1a ) Step 2 Step 2: Pick your favorite printable online coloring sheet. Size the coloring sheet and lay out the design in a landscape fashion using your computer and printer. I have found it easier to center the picture using various software including Microsoft Word, Publisher and Adobe Photoshop. However you can use a printer and scanner to help you center the image. Make sure that you print using a test page first and then print it again on the fabric sheet. You only receive 3 in each pack so make sure that your image is correct first. ( Diagram 2a) 2

3 2a 3a Step 3 Step 3: Cut out the outer shell of the doodle bag 1 panel from the printable fabric sheet and the other outer panel from the accent fabric using the template provided on page 8. Cut out 2 liner panels and 2 interfacing panels using the template. You will need two 36 strips of ribbon for handles and two 8 strips of ribbon for the closure. ( Diagram 3a ) 4a 4b Step 4 Step 4: Peel the backing off of the printable fabric-stick. Lay it over the interfacing adhesive sides together and iron. Now prepare your other outer shell panel by putting the accent fabric over the adhesive side of the interfacing and ironing them together. ( Diagram 4a-c ) 4c 3

4 5a 5b Step 5 Step 5: This is a great place for the kids to sew their own bags. It is a simple straight stitch along the sides and bottom of the bag lining and outer shell. The seam allowance needs to be between 1/4 and 1/2 but as long as all of the seams are the same it doesn t matter. ( C heck to see if your machine has a slow speed for your beginner ) ( D iagram 5a-b ) 6a Step 6 Step 6: Line up the side and bottom seams and pin right sides together. Sew the corners of the bag together. You will need to do this twice once for the outer shell and once for the lining. ( D iagram 6a ) 7a 1.5 7b Step 7 Step 7: Put the liner aside and cut your 36 ribbon straps. This is another place where you can customize the child s bag especially for them. Leave some excess on either side because we will tie the ribbon in a knot at the end of the tutorial. Pin the ribbon 1.5 from either side and sew the ribbon down to the outer shell 1 below the top of the bag. ( D iagram 7a-b ) 4

5 This is what your outer shell should look like. 8a 3 Openings Step 8 Step 8: Pin the lining to the outer shell right sides together. You need to leave an 3 opening at the top of the bag on either side. This is so you can turn the bag right side out and will be the holes for the ribbon closure. ( D iagram 8a ) Step 9 Step 9: Sew around the top of the bag using a 1/4 seam allowance. Leave two 3 holes in the center on either side for the ribbon closures. Turn the Doodle bag right side out and Iron the bag. ( D iagram 9a ) 9a 3 Openings 10a Step10 Step10: Pin the ribbon closure strips in place on either side the bag. Topstitch 1/4 seam allowance around the top of the bag. Iron the bag and tie the ribbon handles and closure. ( Diagram 10a) Now give your Doodle Bag even more life by coloring on the printable fabric! 5
