9 Introduction Welcome to the AutoCAD Civil 3D 2009: Designing Intersections and Cul-de-Sacs Autodesk Official Training Courseware (AOTC), training courseware for use in Authorized Training Center (ATC ) locations, corporate training settings, and other classroom settings. Although this courseware is designed for instructor-led courses, you can also use it for self-paced learning. The courseware encourages self-learning through the use of the AutoCAD Civil 3D Help system. This introduction covers the following topics: Course objectives About AutoCAD Civil 3D in this courseware About civil engineering processes in this courseware Prerequisites Using this courseware CD contents Installing the exercise data files from the CD Feedback This courseware is complementary to the software documentation. For detailed explanations of features and functionality, refer to the Help system in the software. Course Objectives After completing this course, you will be able to: Create a cul-de-sac. Create a road knuckle. Design an intersection for peer roads. Design an intersection where a side street joins a main road. About AutoCAD Civil 3D in this Courseware In AutoCAD Civil 3D, as with most AutoCAD applications, several possible methods exist to accomplish the same task. This courseware is not intended to teach the essential features of Civil 3D, but rather how to apply software processes to particular engineering tasks. The intent is to demonstrate Civil 3D primarily as a design tool. You do not set up styles, manually edit text or labels, or perform general drafting tasks. Also, a number of design and drafting tasks would have to be completed before a final plan set would be ready for submittal. ix

10 About Civil Engineering Processes in this Courseware This book guides you through one possible intersection and cul-de-sac design process. The primary focus of this courseware is to teach a qualified engineer or designer how Civil 3D can be used as a tool in the design solution to perform common engineering tasks more accurately and in less time. This courseware is not intended to teach civil engineering principles or to recommend one engineering procedure over another. It is understood that design procedures can and do vary by region, organization, and even individual engineer. Also, due to time constraints of this course, it is not possible to show all the steps required to refine the design or to create many of the drafting components that are required for a final plan set. The features of Civil 3D used in the exercises can be applied to these tasks, enabling you to generate a plan-ready final design. Prerequisites The target audience for this class includes experienced civil engineers and designers with a firm grasp of the fundamental features of Civil 3D and civil engineering principles. Before taking this course, you should have: Completed an AutoCAD Civil 3D Essentials AOTC course or have in-depth knowledge of Civil 3D features and functionality. Experience with civil engineering processes and terminology. AutoCAD Civil 3D 2009 installed on your computer. Installed the Express Tools prior to working on the exercises. Many of the exercises make use of Express Tools, which are included on the AutoCAD Civil 3D installation CD. These tools are part of the standard installation; ensure that you choose this option when installing the software. Using this Courseware We recommend that you complete the lessons in the order that they are presented unless you are already familiar with the processes and functionality described in those lessons. Each lesson and exercise builds on the previous ones to produce a complete solution. Each chapter contains: Lessons There are three or more lessons in each chapter. Exercises Practical, real-world examples using the processes you have learned. Each exercise contains stepby-step procedures and graphics to help you to successfully complete the exercise. CD Contents The CD attached to the back cover of this book contains all the data and drawings you need to complete the exercises in this course. x Introduction

11 Installing the Exercise Data Files from the CD To install the data files for the exercises: 1. Insert the courseware CD. 2. When the setup wizard begins, follow the instructions on-screen to install the data. 3. If the wizard does not start automatically, browse to the root directory of the CD and double-click Setup.exe. All data that comes with this courseware MUST be installed in the following location. Failure to do so will result in unexpected surface creation and the exercises will not work correctly. The wizard will automatically install the data to this location. C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Autodesk Learning\Civil 3D 2009\ Designing Intersections and Cul-de-Sacs After you install the data from the CD, this folder contains all the files necessary to complete each exercise in this course.
