AP Summer Assignments: These summer assignments are for students both attending Ola and Luella High Schools. NOTE: AP (complete Sketchbook plus 4 from list); Drawing 2 (Complete Sketchbook plus 3); GHP (Complete 1 from drawing, 1 from 2D and 2 from sculpture plus a sketchbook). If doing both AP and GHP push AP. Please plan carefully your summer works for they will be used at the start of the year to evaluate you placement and growth. Each work section is designed to help you explore media and develop a BIG IDEA for your concentrations next school year. REMEMBER!!!! ALL WORKS MUST BE 100% ORIGINAL!!!! About the portfolios: You will submit 3 sections to the Collegeboard for credit. The sections are: Concentration: This section is based on a single theme that grows throughout the semester. The idea must be evident both in visual and conceptual form. How do I pick an idea you may ask? I usually ask students to explore a question they have or a problem they want to solve Example (My concentration depicts ways to end world hunger or I have used my concentration to document examples of bullying at my school and/or bring attention to this issue). The possibilities are endless; however, you will need to make 12+ works that relate to the theme you design. Use your sketchbook heavily to help develop this Big Idea over the summer Research what other students have done by going to google and typing in AP Studio Art Themes. You will pull up a bunch of examples. Breadth: This section is based on exploration of ideas and media. Try a still life, an abstraction, a cubist work, a surrealist work, a portrait, a landscape, a cartoon, etc Experiment with mixed media and different themes. Must have 12+ works for this section. You may use works from previous years and/or your summer works for this section. Make Make Make Quality: 5 of your best works from either section of the portfolio and/or new works. Looking for perfect detail, clean, clear, bright colors or strong contrast, etc. You have all year to pick your 5. AP Portfolio options: (you choose) Drawing: Any media wet or dry where you use your skills/hands to make marks. 2D: all of the skills used in drawing with the addition of collage and photography/digital design. 3D: Sculpture/objects you can see from multiple sides made from any media. Summer Assignments: Drawing Portfolio Sketchbook: fill a new sketchbook from cover to cover with the following: 1. Photographs/Collage/mixed media 2. Writings/ideas/themes to explore/words that jog memories/poems/songs 3. Material list and sketches of future ideas draw, draw, draw! 4. Magazine clippings, articles, movie tickets, fabric, leaves, stickers, etc 5. Make a pop up page 6. Do not leave any page blank.full it up until the spine breaks on your book. Then duct-tape it back together. Have fun with it! 7. Date every page and work on it every day. This is the most important part of the summer assignments. Artwork 1: Photorealistic Portrait. Include foreground, middle ground and background. The key is detail. This may be in b/w or color and in any medium you feel the most confident in. Artwork 2: Landscape painting (acrylic or water color). Looking for detail.
Artwork 3: Still-life in extreme detail (black and white prisma or color prisma) you may paint if you wish. Artwork 4: Choice: Mixed Media drawing interactive (take a photograph of the human interaction. (Great concentration idea!) Artwork 5: Choice: Theme based (test your Big Idea to see if you wish to continue to explore it or change it) 2D Design Portfolio Summer Assignments: (all works can also be digital) Sketchbook: same as drawing Artwork 1: Explore Surrealism with your portrait and/or break up the picture plane (section off using line) using different media on different sections..your choice on how to proceed.
Artwork 2: Capture 5 photographs of the same location from 5 different points of view. Next cut/crop the photographs to make one photo collage of the location (look up cubism or photo collage) Artwork 3: Create a still-life that is coming to life and/or attacking the viewer. How could a cup toss coffee on the viewer? How can a candle dim its light to allow fruit to launch an attack on the viewer? How can you use photography in conjunction with drawing skills to interact with the viewer from a flat picture plane? Have fun! And try and make me laugh! Artwork 4: Choice: Create an image using pixlr.com (free Photoshop) where a person is seen in 5 places in the same photo interacting with oneself.
Artwork 5: Create a comic storyboard with at least 5 picture sections. Make sure that the characters are yours and that it tells an interesting story or create interactive art that interacts with you. 3D Summer assignments: Sketchbook: Same/3D themed (what do you want to make and out of what?) Artwork 1: Make a cool hammock from recycled materials. (examples below include an old pitch return cage with an old wooden rug coat hangers Extra-large hula-hoops and rocking chair legs Be inventive.
Artwork 2: Plastics: make an animal from recyclables and plastics. Artwork 3: Metals or plaster: With metals you can explore pouring aluminum (melted cans) into an ant hill and dig out the results (must have parent permission and assistance). Do not do this on your own. Or You can take sand, put it in a big box, wet it lightly, carve into the sand and build up sections to create a cavity. Pour liquid plaster into the sand and allow to dry for 2 days. Remove and dust off. Drill a hole in the bottom of your creation and mount it to a block of wood. Artwork 4: Mixed media: Concrete, Styrofoam, spray insulation, and natural ingredient (moss, plants, etc). Did you know that if you take Styrofoam and spray paint it (use clear or white) it will eat the Styrofoam? You can fill the pits with spray foam, concrete, and/or moss, plants, etc you can also take 2 X 6 wood planks and make a square. Place Styrofoam in sections around the outside. Fill with concrete. When it hardens, pick out the Styrofoam and fill with moss. Let it sit outside to get the moss to grow on the form (cool wet area). Have fun. GOOD LUCK!!! HAVE FUN if you have questions to jwood@henry.k12.ga.us
