3 WELCOME TO Welcome to the 3rd Annual Rod Library Mini Comic Con! The event is free and open to the public. Our goal is to provide an open forum for discussion about the theme of a networked society focused on popular culture, comics, and gaming. Our panel presentations are also focused on providing a forum for discussion about the complex issues. We will be hosting a Tweetwall again this year! Use #RodCon16 to be a part of the conversation. By participating in RodCon, all participants agree to allow the Rod Library to use their images for promotional purposes. To see the photos of the event and the photobooth, go to unirodlibrary. The Rod Library is always free and open to the public. You can stop by the Circulation desk any time and sign up for a free visitor card. The card will grant you in-house access to any of the library databases, and the ability to check out materials. You need a photo ID to apply. 5 SCHEDULE ALL DAY EVENTS SCHEDULE 10:00 11:00 ARTEMIS: Room 373 Artemis Space Bridge Simulator is a game where you take the role of a bridge officer in a sci-fi capital ship. You ARE your favorite character from your favorite space tv show. LEARNING COMMONS Kid s Costume Contest Escape Room: Rooms 210 and 272 Solve puzzles and race the clock to escape..we will have two escape rooms going throughout the day, with games starting every 45 minutes. Room 1 (210) will begin at 10:30, and Room 2 (272) will begin at 10:45. You can reserve your time by signing up at the room of your choice. MAKER SCHOLAR Kid Zone: 3rd Floor Learn how to make Shrinky dinks, lightsabers, superhero masks and more! OUTSIDE Batmobile Batmobile Tabletop Gaming: Room 287 Network Nirvana will be hosting the Tabletop Game Room and presenting Adytum: Redux. For more information check out their FaceBook page. 7 WHAT S THAT? EVENT DESCRIPTIONS Adult Costume Contest: Come and strut your stuff on the catwalk for fabulous prizes. Attention! The Comic con and costume contest is an ALL AGES event. Any extremely risque, overly gory or costumes deemed inappropriate by our staff will be asked to leave or change. Contestants will meet at the South Wall near the Book Bistro (cafe) area by 3:00 PM. Belegarth Demo: Work with the UNI Swordfighting Club to learn this fullcontact, fun, easy-to-learn game of medieval/fantasystyle combat using foam padded weapons. Bruised and Beautiful Bodies: How Comics See Us and Are Seen By Us Presentations by students in this semester s Honors Seminar Graphic Novels: Narrative Art and Sequential Storytelling, with Professor Harry Brod serving as instructor. Part I: Comics and the Human Body: Sex, Violence and Emotions in Comics Analyzing Violence in Comics by Hansen Breitling From Super to Someone: The Introduction of Emotions in the Marvel Age of Comics by Lexi Byrnes Women s Bodies in Comics: Sexualization, Objectification or Liberation? by Abbie Shew Bruised and Beautiful Bodies continued: Part II: Comics andtheir Audiences: Propaganda, Performance and Production Propaganda in Comics: World War II and Beyond by Karen Kiesel From Page to Stage: Adapting Graphic Novels for Scripted Performance Art by Mallory Park The Comic Book Industry: Behind the Scenes by Brooke Wiese Deborah Whaley Presentation: Deborah Elizabeth Whaley, PhD, is an artist, curator, writer, and Associate Professor of American Studies and African American Studies at the University of Iowa. Her recent book is Black Women in Sequence: Re-inking Comics, Graphic Novels, and Anime (2015); it explores graphic novel production and comic book fandom, looking in particular at African, African American, and multiethnic women as deployed in television, film, animation, gaming, and print representations of comic book and graphic novel characters. After her presentation she will be available for signings and pictures in the Learning Commons. Half Masted Improv Demonstration: Cedar Falls Half Masted Improvisation Troupe will entertain you at the Learning Commons stage.

8 WHAT S THAT? EVENT DESCRIPTIONS Harry Potter and the World of Controversy: Although the Harry Potter universe is one of fiction, the issues that are addressed in the series are very real. Join us in discussing these real world issues and other controversies of Harry Potter! Hosting Your Own Podcast: This panel and presentation will briefly discuss the history of comic fandom and podcasting s role as the current and future form of fan interaction and correspondence around the comics medium. We will finish with how to make your own podcast to discuss and share your passion for any form of entertainment. STEM Trivia: UNI STEM Ambassadors will test your knowledge of Science and Comics. Held in Room 378! How to Use the Makerspace: 3D Design Tour the Rod Library Maker Space and participate in demonstrations of free 3D Design Software. Explore how 3-D printing is used for prototyping and one-off printing, for example in cosplay. Learn how to submit your own designs to the Rod for printing. Make it Sew: The Maker Space and Cosplay: A presentation on what the Rod Library s Maker Space has to offer to help you with your cosplay progress! T.A.P.P. Fashion Show: Midnight in Manhattan is the theme of the 24th annual design show organized by University of Northern Iowa students in the Fashion Promotion class. Garments for this show are designed and constructed by students in the Textiles and Apparel major. Previewed today are a select number of designs that will be featured in the show on April 9, 2016 in Lang Auditorium at 7:00 P.M.
